Consistently terrific Chinese food is made from scratch at this long time Bonner Springs business. The hot and sour soup is the best I've had, and will cure anything from a sinus infection to a hangnail. The owner/operators are second generation family members. Grandma still cooks occasionally! Yelp found Red Fortune for us when we and were driving through the area and needed a pit stop. One thing we quickly noted was that the staff knew almost all the customers, they were very friendly and welcoming. The food was pretty good overall. The crab rangoon were huge, though were more like cream cheese/scallion rangoon w/o discernable crab. The general tso's chicken was made with high quality chicken and light breading, with a sauce that was more savory than sweet. The pork fried dumplings were very good, my favorite of the dishes. I didn't particularly care for their fried rice, as it was rather dark and heavy, but that's a personal preference. Fast, friendly, fresh and delicious Chinese food. Our server was very friendly to answer all our questions. Gave us some special almond cookies for dessert as the owner/manger said it was our first time! The sizzling soup was fresh and delicious and the chow mein!!! Totally unexpected! The food was hot but they didn't give me any silverware for my takeout order. I ordered the won ton soup and combination fried rice. The wontons were chewy and the meat was kinda hard. The broth was salty and reminded me of an egg drop soup base. Unfortunately I was not impressed. The fried rice was pretty good. The chicken was tender. The shrimp was clean and tasty. The beef was well seasoned. Overall it was a well seasoned and tasty dish. The take out service was pretty good. I'm only giving 3 stars because I went primarily for the soup but didn't like it and I've only tried two things. Based on the rice, I'm sure this establishment could be a 4 or 5 star restaurant. This is an average Chinese restaurant with average to below average food. There is much room for improvement. The fried chicken based dishes were soggy and didn't taste fresh and some of the sauces seemed thin and watery. The Crab Rangoon was the best thing we had. My brother in-law said they were good well when got there at lunch there was not many people in there but what the hack give it a try the Waiter started rushing us on are drinks right as we got settled then even on are food before we got them not like there was any one really in there and now I see why the Crab Ragunoon and anything that was fried taste like burnt grease and the rice was like eating soup and later that day I got really sick won't ever be going back!!!! read more

Solid Chinese-American food. Ordered Orange Chicken, mu-shu pork, and a platter of fried appetizers for two people- had enough for our dinner and leftovers for lunch the next day. Staff are friendly and the food comes out pretty quick. This is probably one of the best Chinese restaurants in KC. We been here several times and it never disappoints. What good can't be said about Red Fortune? I will admit, my review will be a bit biased. My family has been going to Red fortune since I was a wee tot. Considering I'm now a bit larger than a tot must say something about the quality of this establishment. Yes, I still go. Red Fortune in many degrees, taught me to enjoy food. I despised chinese food growing up. In fact, if it wasn't a plain cheeseburger, there was good chance I wasn't eating it. For whatever reason it may be, I decided to branch out one evening and actually try what my parents were eating. I'm glad I did. I don't exactly remember what I ate that evening. What I do remember is thinking red fortune tasted good, which eventually led me to be more adventurous. Fast forward some 13 years and I'm a die hard foody. Enough about my personal story though. Red fortune is a family owned and operated restaurant, and I believe it's been that way since its inception. You may be able to meet a friendlier and more accommodating staff elsewhere, but I have not. The service is always fast, always accurate, and the wait for food is never long. The lunch prices are phenomenal. You WILL NOT find a better lunch price/quality elsewhere in the city when it comes to chinese food. I have tried. And how about the food? Well, my experience is always the same. Somehow, the schezuan chicken, fried rice, and crab rangoon tastes like it did 13 years ago, and tastes the same every time I go in to eat. Everything on the menu is delicious, but get your dish schezuan style. It's the perfect combination of multiple flavors- a garlicy, spicy-sweet brown sauce. You will not find better schezuan in Kansas City, and if you do, I want to know about it. In fact, there's a good chance you'd overlook the schezuan because if you've ever gotten it elsewhere, you probably imagine it as a subpar dish. Red Fortune's schezuan will blow your mind. Don't take my word for it though. It may be in Bonner Springs, but in my mind, it is worth the drive. If you need an excuse to take the family, then go to moon marbles on your way there. Just go. Huge portions. I thought it was a bit pricey but when I got home and opened it, there was enough food in a single order for two people. It fed me and my husband ate the left overs. I had the orange chicken with white rice and it was super yummy. Huge pieces of whole white chicken breast cut into strips and cooked perfectly. I want to go back and try everything now. Not the friendliest staff but it could have been an off day or the fact that I ordered carry out. We'll see on the next visit. I think it was just an off day they were slammed. read more

Not a bad Chinese restaurant. We came in and ordered their lunch specials, and we got a lot of food for not a lot of money. Their soups were amazing, both the hot & sour and the egg drop. We like the crispy wonton strips to munch on, kind of like having bread at your table. Along with the soup, the lunch specials also came with an eggroll or crab rangoon, along with an entree and rice. We did not like the eggroll, which had maybe a speck or two of pork, and crab rangoon, like another reviewer said, hardly had any remnants of crab. General Tso's Chicken was different from others we've had at other restaurants--not as breaded and not as sweet. It was a nice departure, but took a while to get used to. And we ordered off of the lunch menu and got the sweet and sour shrimp, which was bland and hardly eaten. Service was okay. Our waiter was competent but we hardly felt the overwhelming welcome that others have written about. The woman at the cash register was a lot warmer. Another small thing that bothered me was that we were wedged into the table at the corner to the right of the door. Although the chairs that we sat in were large and comfy, my husband and I couldn't move to the chairs closest to the wall because the chairs were so big and there was so little space to move. There were definitely a few hits here, but also some misses. If we're around Bonner Springs we might try Red Fortune again, especially if we're jonesin' for some good soup. When we mentioned we had food allergies, they were immediately ready to answer all of our questions and were fully aware of how to prepare the dishes to be safe. Average Chinese restaurant. I ordered the Sesame Chicken with fried rice and crab Rangoon. The portions were very reasonable. However, there was too much breading in the chicken, and the fried rice seemed as it had been sitting out for a long time. Overall, pretty cheap, but won't go back. read more

10 years ago when I lived in Bonner I would have been right in there with the numerous 5 star reviews I see but unfortunately the last two trips that hasn't been the case. The crab Rangoon was sub par, tart, almost no sweetness. Generals chicken was soggy. I asked for extra broccoli, $1.50? Sure, ok. The portion of broccoli could not be construed as extra. On a positive note, garnering the third star, the shrimp fried rice was quite good. It was hard to get my wife to give a second shot to this little joint I have some loyalty to and I think now we are Evergreen folks. I truly hope they continue to get good ratings b/c I agree with a previous yelper, they are pretty much a Bonner institution. read more

This probably the best Chinese food you can get west of KC or west of OP. Sesame chicken was awesome. Not soggy and not dry. Perfect. The cream cheese Rangoon's. Egg drop soup was really fresh. Tea tasted a little funny but the plum sauce was da bomb so that made up for it. This restaurant has been here since my mom was a kid. Always been such a great spot! read more

The order of Combination Fried Rice (w/ chicken, beef, and shrimp)- will, no chicken, beef, or shrimp. Two orders of Moo Gai Pan- warm with no favor (they must think salt and pepper is "too expensive"). The white rice- cold and sticky and Crab Rangoo- greasy and middle was tasteless. Maria and the gang at Red Fortune deliver the best Chinese to be found in KC! Tons of options for both carnivores and vegetarians, with huge portion sizes at great prices. The atmosphere is very relaxed and family-friendly, but still nice enough that it's a treat for my husband and I to dine in. We're both big fans of the sweet-and-sour chicken and crab rangoon, but the mixed chinese vegetables, empress chicken, and spicy beef dishes are also amazing.
