It's about 40 minutes away from St. Andrews, but it's the closest Hilton and we were using points. The beautiful, old mansion that is featured on the website is an overly-flattering view of this hotel. That building is where the restaurant and bar are located, but the actual rooms are in an attached, 2-story stucco building that is lackluster at best. The gardens behind the hotel are very lovely on a nice day, however. The rooms themselves are fine. Nothing fancy but completely comfortable, and we weren't spending much time here. We had a king bed room that was in reality just two twins pushed together, which makes for very uncomfortable snuggling as you can feel the seam in your back. The room was small, but not the smallest I've experienced in Europe. BYO shampoo and conditioner--the stuff offered by the hotel is not good. One big complaint is that this sits adjacent to a major road, and you can hear cars on the highway at all hours of the day and night. The bar area is nice for a drink after a long day. The breakfast buffet is ample but not very tasty--low brow execution of Scottish favorites like haggis, blood pudding, eggs (very clearly powdered eggs!), beans and potato scones. The one way they over-deliver is the staff. Everyone was incredibly nice and accomodating. I wouldn't rush to stay here again, but it wasn't terrible.

The room was not maintained well and the bed sheets were dirty - not people dirty, but it looked like someone dropped a pen in the wash. Best part though was the shower - good, strong hot water. Too bad the bathroom fan was on its last legs and couldn't take the steam away. If it were only the room, I would actually come back here. It was all tolerable. However, the restaurant service was awful. It was like a scene out of Fawlty Towers. I witnessed the maître d yelling at a customer who had misunderstood the waiter. And when one of our tour members called him on it, another wait staff joined in to tell her off. To say there was any semblance of customer service on the two meals we had here would be a stretch. The faux maze outside the restaurant could only be used as an excuse to get out of the place fast so you didn't have to tolerate the staff attitude. For this reason, we have crossed this off our "go back to" list for sure.

Big hotel with rooms to rent on the property. They had play areas, kids video and play areas too. Pool had really weird hours. Apparently it was disinfected every few hours or some such nonsense AND you had to make an appointment for available times (in mid-day). I think that would have been fun but didn't use it. An area outside with growling moving Dino's... large enough to be fun for kids... a surprise for us! We loved the extensive trail system and the ruins of a local castle on a tiny island in the lake. Trails are well marked. People were nice, staff was helpful. Area was pretty and quiet. Centrally located. Great transit system; we made appointments to see local attractions via trains / bus - gotta get the timing right and pay ahead. Note: there are stiff fines for cars traveling inside Edinburgh and London- check on this before you drive!

We stayed in one of the A-frame cabins on the property. It was about a ten minute walk to the main hotel building, which we were okay with as there were families with children running all around the main hotel building. The cabins were perfect for four of us who wanted to sleep, read and catch up with each other. Cabins are well laid out and nicely furnished. The Hilton Coylumbridge is outside of Aviemore by a little less than a mile. That meant any meals with alcohol in Aviemore meant one of us had to be a designated driver. We did take advantage of the on-site restaurant our last night, so all four of us were able to eat, drink and be merry. We will be back.

The food was very good and the service, although a little slow, was impeccable. The beautiful restaurant is like a room in a stately home with artistically painted wall panels. There are some other sitting rooms and a nice bar with a real fire. Incidentally, the bar is open 24 hours for residents at the time of writing. Unfortunately, the accomodation was disappointing to say the least. On arrival, we found that we would not be staying in the Country House building, but instead, in the "Sportsman's Lodge". Okay, we thought, ' still sounds good. However, when we drove a minute or two down the road, we discovered that the "Sportsman's Lodge" was, in fact, about 20 little Butlins style cabins with no WiFi. Sparcely furnished and worn, and the mattress was so soft and thin, that we "bottomed-out" on it. Each cabin had it's own bathroom, but it was a big let down compared to where we thought we would be staying.. That said, it wasn't crazy expensive (~UKP 140), so I guess we got what we paid for, and the (extra cost) dinner and breakfast in that beautiful restaurant partially made up for it. Beautiful grounds too, but the bait and switch on the accomodation was definitely disappointing. None of the pictures on the (third party) website showed the exterior of the "Sportsman's Lodge", just the beautiful Country House.

From the moment you walk in the front door you know you're staying somewhere special. We stayed for two nights, on the Friday and Saturday night, and after our disappointing stay at the Dunkeld Hilton, this cheered us up. We didn't stay in the main hotel building but were lodged in the "Riverside Suites". The room was perfect and had a door leading out on to a small covered balcony overlooking their fishing beat on the river Tay. The balcony had a table and a couple of chairs so you could sit and take in the view and fresh air. We arrived a bit too late for lunch so opted for afternoon tea in the drawing room which is this big old room with those lumpy comfy chairs you'd expect of a pile such as this. On the first night we opted to dine in starting with aperitifs in the bar. The barman knocked up a couple of mean bloody mary's to get our appetites going. The restaurant is top notch and I found my three courses of scallops, chicken (really regretted not having the fillet steak after I spotted it on another diner's plate) and desert exquisite. The saucing and presentation were outstanding. As you would expect from an establishment such as the Ballathie their wine list is pretty extensive and they also have a decent selection of "new world" wines. We opted for a bottle of Angus The Bull to go with our dinner which was excellent. All in all I couldn't find a fault with the Ballathie, it would have been nice to stay in the main building, but we weren't disappointed with the river side suites. I'll definitely be back.

Annoyingly the onsite parking at the hotel was full, both front and back, after circling the place like parking space eating vultures we gave up and parked at a free car park along the road behind the Co-op. It didn't look all that secure but we had no problems, other than a wee walk to the hotel, which probably was similar in length to the walk to the back car park. The hotel is quite big and has lots of rooms on different levels even on the same floor. Potential difficulty for older people with heavy bags I suppose. The hotel was nice, not dated, but not new, the room was nice and clean if a little small, though it did have a fairly large T.V. The spa part lied and said it had a steam room, which it didn't but it did have a sauna. Some of the signs were misleading, like the one to the pool which we couldn't actually access, instead you had to go through the bar and then the ballroom. We breakfasted here twice and had dinner once. The food was good but the service was a little slow on two out the three occasions. All this moaning, then why a 4 star review I hear you ask? Simple, the staff, they were absolutely great really accommodating, helpful, friendly and cheerful, they really helped to make this a good experience. We also booked hot stone massages at late notice which and they were as accommodating as they could be in this respect. If I was up this way I would be happy to come here again, however, had the staff not been so great then it was probably more of a 3 star kinda place.

The internal layout is reassuring, spacious and the food and wines are always exceptional, though I think a little too many French wines of late are on the list. They pay attention to what you want out of the evening and are always welcoming. The food is some of the best in Scotland, as we again proved last week.
