So here is the story. I actually live across the street from this place. I decided to go and order a pizza to go. It was 2100( 9pm). I go inside and I was told, they ran out of pizza for "to go" customers. I could not believe this, they close at 10 pm, and the outside patio was full of people, I guess they were eating or maybe just drinking. I am very sad a disappointed. Finally got to try Red Light pizza just as Detroit style Pizza has his it's peak popularity in DC. There are now more options in the city but Red Light is a solid one. So how's the pizza? Delicious. The sauce is perfectly savory and a little sweet, a bit of garlic and quite tomatoey without being watery, just thick enough to hold its own on top. The cheese is hard to comment on just because so many of the pizza have alternatives whether white sauce or ricotta or burrito, but all have been delicious. And the crust...the signature of the Detroit pizza. Perfectly fluffy yet crispy. Just a bit of a char on the edges to give it a nice grilled flavor. Detroit style is truly the best if crust is important to you and they do it well here. Outside of the pizza, the other food is hit or miss. Personally wasn't a fan of the Detroit boneless wings. I went here once, maybe 4 years ago for a happy hour dessert date kinda thing. I can't say I remember much about it and I've not been again until today. I read about their Detroit pizza addition, and seeing as I spent my entire childhood in Detroit, I knew it was meant to go back. A++++! Friends and I had the classic pep and a build your own with mushrooms and caramelized onions. BOTH were on point with their cheese, toppings, perfect deep but not too deep dish flaky, crunchy crust ratio. I ended up taking the Coney style pizza home for next day fare, and my Lyft driver immediately commented on how good it smelled when I got into his car. How can a coney chili cheese dog on this amazing crust be wrong? ;) Y'all gotta try this if for no reason than it's currently the only place in DC with Detroit style of pizza. Give up any notions pizza should be super thin crust - this has depth both literally and metaphorically. Kudos to Chef Naomi for bringing this to DC! My only star retraction is this place had no AC running inside on an 88 degree day. I have been on the hunt for true Detroit Style Pizza in the DMV for quite some time. There are very few places that offer an authentic pie around here. I can tell you that Red Light is the real deal. I've been to Buddy's in Detroit which is a Detroit Style pizza legend. Red Light knows what they are doing. If you are unfamiliar Detroit style pizza, I'll fill you in: Square pizza, about two inches thick, the dough is not dense but rather airy, light, and buttery. The cheese is baked onto the crust so you are left with delicious, crispy, cheesey edges. The cheese used is called brick cheese which kinda tastes like a combination of cheddar and mozzarella. Then go the toppings and sauce is finally ladled across the top. I'm telling you there is no better pizza than Detroit. Regarding Red Light, I wish this place marketed themselves solely as a pizza joint. I'm afraid with the simple name Red Light they won't get the exposure they deserve. I would rebrand as a Detroit Style pizza restaurant, rather than a bar. The decor is simple, the seating isn't ample. Outside there are a ton of biergarten, communal style tables. You order at a window at the bar and they bring your food with a number system. The set up isn't ideal or sophisticated but the pizza is worth the wait if a table isn't available when you show up. 100% this would be a five star review if the seating arrangement was better sorted out. I will continue to crave this pizza and try to get back as quickly as possible. P.S. I got a pepperoni pizza and a burrata pizza. Burrata was good but pepperoni reigns supreme. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere created at Red Light. The drinks were strong and tasty (margarita & old fashioned) and the music was great. The Motown pizza was pretty good, but not a culinary delicacy. The wings were the equivalent of wings you would find at 3:00 am at 7/11. The drinks were initially served in very dirty glasses, this is unacceptable during a pandemic. Additionally the staff was pushy to move guests and told my party that we had to leave after 2 hours (we were fine with this request). After an hour and twenty minutes we were asked to leave and the staff gave contrary information saying we needed to leave after 90 minutes... we had to show the signage disputing this fact. Overall, you get the feeling that RedLight is unorganized and sloppy when it comes to customer service and cleanliness. Dine at your own risk and happiness. read more

I couldn't help but be a little bit skeptical after hearing dozens of friends rave about this place--the skepticism was misplaced. Red Light rocks. I've always had a soft spot for Pizza Hut, and there's something about the pizza here that strikes a similar chord. The crust is buttery, the tomato sauce is fresh and well-seasoned, and the toppings are plentiful. One pizza is perfectly split between two people wanting a full meal, which makes it a pretty great deal too. We had the 6 Mile and loved it. The spicy honey is an excellent touch and almost makes the pickled jalapenos (not typically my favorite) taste caramelized. Definitely worth a try. The drinks here are a hidden gem. We had the Old Tornado, which was refreshing with a good balance of gin and grapefruit, but the real standouts were the up-and-coming additions to the menu that bartender Marvin generously let us try. An infused liquor connoisseur, Marvin treated us to a cucumber-infused vodka cocktail that is hands down one of the most elevated drinks I've had at any bar in DC. The cucumber-infused spirit tastes like a trip to the spa and really shines through in this drink. We'll certainly be back to order this cocktail off the summer menu and try any new masterpieces Marvin has in stock. read more

Good cocktails but the desserts and shakes leave much to be desired. I am a self proclaimed dessert connoisseur. I very much wanted this place to be awesome. Unfortunately, the desserts are just ok. We had several during our first visit and none of them were very good. Even the shake desserts we got were not good. The red velvet boozy shake was served with ice (why oh why) and with pieces of cake in some milk. It was not good at all. However, red light redeems itself with the happy hour that they have even on the weekend. The cocktails are actually delicious and they even have a special they make that is similar to a Moscow mule with rosemary they light on fire in front of you! The flat breads are also very good. As a Detroiter visiting DC, I was super excited to find a restaurant that had Detroit style pizza. The naming of the pizzas was clever. As far as the pizza goes, true Detroit style pizza has thinner, crisper crust. Sauce was more chunky than a traditional Detroit pizza. Pepperonis too big. Got the Detroit Style pizza and I completely loved it. The crust was thick but airy, soft and chewy, and wasn't too oily. The sauce being on top was a bit strange at first but I realized it works quite well. It brings in some flexibility to your pizza eating experience: when you want a saucier slice just bite into the sauce and when you want more of the cheese and crust flavor then avoid the sauce. Really cool. But the best part: the crispy cheese on the edges of the crust.... mmmm so good. Great pizza. ***3.75 stars*** I visited Red Light twice in 3 days. The first just for drinks after dinner at The Pig, and the second for just dessert after dinner at Birch and Barley. With these 2 visits, I feel the 3.75 stars rating is pretty appropriate. The pluses of Red Light starts with its awesome people watching location. The patio puts you right on 14th, so you just hang out and watch passing people if you are lacking good conversation at your table. Thankfully, I've had awesome conversation during both of my visits, so I opted to sit in the sexy, dark, almost dungeonlike interior on the one couch in the whole lounge (kind of a minus). The next plus is the very appealing drink menu. I think no matter who you are, DC lawyer to DC hipster, you'll most likely find something on the drink menu that looks appealing. Both my boyfriend and I found several libations that sparked our unique tastes. I wish I could recall the names because they're not posted on the website; the second minus of Red Light, they're online menu is not currently updated with their newest drinks. For those who scope out the menu before visiting, this could lead to disappoint if a drink they're interested in on the website isn't available when they visit...Also, for those like me who have a hard time remembering names, it makes writing reviews a lot more difficult! Finally, I love the overall concept of Red Light. My two favorite things, cocktails and desserts, finally have a place where they are put center stage. I do intend to try more of the dessert offerings in the future after trying the Chocolate Crunch Cake last night. I was slightly displeased with the subtlety of the chocolate cake; it was greatly overshadowed by the bold passion fruit sorbet and caramelized bananas. But the crunchy topping on the cake and sorbet were so yummy that I can overlook the slightly too mild cake. Honestly, I would be happy with just a bowl of the passion fruit sorbet on my next visit. It stands on its own as a satisfying and tasty dessert. A minus of Red Light is the somewhat disorganized service. During my visits, drinks were brought to my table that hadn't been ordered, menus were taken without asking, and checks were slow to be closed. I'm not sure why these issues are happening in such a small place that is staffed with what appears to be more than enough people. They really could use some training, if you ask me. The issues are pretty minor, but they do add up.... Lastly, last night I was there when the signature flaming drink was being prepared, and was made to chuckle over the peculiar smell emitted from the burning herb being added the the drink. Let's just say, it kind of smell like something I came across once or twice (or some number of times) that I don't believe is legal yet in the DC area. This feature of Red Light is a grey area for me in regards to star summation. My friends and I popped by on a cool Saturday night for a drink or two outside. Red light was perfect for us - there was a fan blowing on our seating making the temperature positively delightful - because its smaller and outside, we were able to hear each other talk. I liked the variety of drinks, we had beer, spiked seltzer, wine and a cocktail. Super disappointed in this place after my visit on a Sunday at 7PM. They had a very small menu- which I understand is typical. That being said, we were hopeful. The Sunday specials were noteworthy: $5 draft beers, 1/2 price on all glasses of wine, and $2 off any food item. So... To start, I ordered the "BBQ Chicken Sliders." It comes in a little trio with fries. The chicken isn't shredded as I had anticipated, but instead is roughly chopped. There's also ZERO sauce on these. The only flavor seems to come from the vinegar-based coleslaw topping the chicken. It's unfortunate because I think with a little sauce these would have been amazing. Instead it tasted dry and just of vinegar. My friend ordered the "Red Light Grilled Cheese." What's not to love about cheddar, Gruyere, and Gouda?! Well... As it turns out there's a lot not to love. In some cruel twist of fate, the trio of cheeses ended up tasting not only greasy but somehow dried out as well. We both agreed that a small tomato dipping sauce would have remedied the poor situation. The winner and saving grace of the evening was definitely our shared order of the "Kroppkakor." Which is fancy for: meatball deep fried in mashed potato. It was heaven. There are three and they are enormous and will fill you up when the rest of your food leaves you disappointed. A lot of yeas for me on this place but it could have been better. I think the idea of a dessert/cocktail bar is one that every major city should capitalize. With that said, this is the only dessert/cocktail bar I have ever been to. I'm a total fan. VENUE: This place is deceptively small. I don't know if it was because it was Valentines/Presidents day weekend or if, with the cold weather and the outside patio being closed off that there was less space to spread out the crowd but we stood at the tiny ledge by the entrance until a small two top opened up. There IS a large table towards the side entrance that would easily and comfortably seat a group of 8-10 but alas, another group had already claimed it. The vibe is very speak-easy-esque. Sort of this dark hole with classic vibes. There is projector that plays Charlie Chaplain films - a nice touch for me. FOOD/DRINK: I ordered the Magdalene because it had elderflower and st. germaine. It was strong and good but not memorable. But let me get onto the the more important thing: Dessert! So here's where it's going to get tricky because what we ordered is not on the menu on their website. We ordered a NUTELLA SMORE, A sticky rice dessert (which was amazing), and something gingerbread with pear sorbet. I know. Terrible review. But let's just say I did not have a problem with the dessert. I should have written down what I got but all i have a photos... so if you're desperate enough to try this off menu selection, just read off these terrible descriptions. Lol. Strangely, devoid of red lights. This was the third stop in an evening that first involved dinner and drinks at Cafe Saint Ex and an ill-advised adventure at Masa 14 that lasted us all of half an hour, so at that point all I wanted was a regular coffee with cream and sugar (Saturday, 1am). It was a good coffee - perhaps in part because it was much needed after many cocktails and one Corona Light - but also because I think they were serving up decent coffee. My friends ordered wine, I think, or something. I don't know. But what I do remember is that one friend ordered some kind of s'mores concoction off the menu that was described by one of the other members in our party as "divine" and I believe I am in full agreement. There was this toasty wheel of marshmallow fluff with some Nutella and some other stuff and who cares what exactly was in it. Only then did I make the connection that this was both a bar and a desert place. Whatever Pandora station they were playing was made of magic and I want to learn their secret. There was Bon Jovi, some Elton Johh, that Jump in the Line song from Beetlejeuse. Journey. At Masa 14 earlier the DJ had basically raped Journey with horrible bouncy techno noises that should never come out of a speaker ever, so it was nice to actually hear "Don't Stop Believing" in its unadulterated form. Server and bartender were very nice, and there was a convenient coat rack near the bathrooms. So few places bother to think about coats anymore. The ambiance was chill, if a little sterile. The clientele was patently unobnoxious for a place with so much free-flowing alcohol. The stools, however, hurt my butt. read more

They have the same promo going on Thurs and Friday but it ends at 8 PM (very generous for those days of the week).
