The curry had a bit of spice to it. I liked it. My friend did not. The chip aka fries were good. Our dinner came out right after getting our appetizer. I ordered the fish and chips and it was excellent. The batter on the fish had a good crunch. It came with a small cup of slaw and tartar sauce. There was malt vinegar and other condiments on the table. One thing I didn't like was not the restaurants fault. Red Lion Grog House is next door to the Hi-Fi, a local music venue. I needed a place to "pre-game" and get a drink before a show (Broken Social Scene, if you must know), so in I went. This is one of those places that's dark and dank inside, and it's a little disorienting walking inside because you feel like you stepped into a different realm. And then, when you emerge after having your little drink, you're punted back out into the real world and blinded by the natural light of day. But while you're inside, Red Lion feels like a cozy little den. They have video games that you can play from the bar (Mario), and sports on the TVs and music playing. There are booths and tables, but also a long bar where you can sit and think, and is underlit with a red light. I saw some people around me eating, but I was only there for a drink, so I didn't even look at the food menu. The servers were nice and efficient, and the beer I got was cold and local. This is a good spot to pop in and get a cheeky drink, if you're in the mood like I was. read more

A buddy and I were going to a show at the Hi FI, which is basically right next door. We were looking for something close, quick and casual and boy did we choose right! The atmosphere was perfect - just a small bar with plenty of open seating, a menu that had some variety but not overwhelming, and the server was as nice and helpful as could be. The beer menu was of interest to my friend, as he enjoys craft beers more than I - he was impressed and ordered several :) I had a fruited sour that was good but not great. My fault, I was experimenting. I ordered the fish and chips and loved them. Friend had scotch egg appetizer (no way was I touching that) and a burger. Loved all of his choices as well. Price was right, and the food good enough that I asked if I could bring the kids in there - it's going on my list when the family is in Indy for shows or events. I went to Red Lion for lunch today. Matt, the bartender, was awesome! He was very attentive, personable and friendly even though he had to take care of the whole bar. This is only the 2nd time I have been here and it had been a LONG time. I asked him what he would recommend between the bangers and mash and fish and chips if he were eating and without hesitation he said the fish and chips. The fish was excellent! Flaky, juicy fall apart melt in your mouth fish and excellent tasty,,crunchy breading. The tartar sauce, lemon, and malt vinegar they provided really set it off. The "chips" were okay. I believe they are house made. Could have stood to have some more seasoning the coleslaw was good too. The atmosphere is still great. Looks like an old English pub still. Service was great and the food came out quickly for our dinner party of 8. This was an after work team event. I liked the dive bar feel but the food was lackluster. We shared Scotch Eggs and wings for the table. Tiny wings a bit over fried with sauces on the side. This was my first time trying the eggs and I liked them but didn't love them. I'm a fan of hard boiled eggs but I wasn't so sure about the fried sausage and bread crumbs. The server suggested fish & chips so I got that. Feeling like a bit of British cuisine we suggested this spot for a meet up with friends. They also have the added bonus of half-priced appetizers if you arrive between 4-6. Yay! We love a good deal especially if it is delicious! There are several tables near the door as well as tables lining the wall as the space is long and narrow. It doesn't feel crossed though but more cozy and friendly. Our server was helpful and nice and kept bringing us drinks even after we paid our bill (which is one of the things I often notice as a personal sign of good customer service). The menu is varied with some standard pub type options but with a British twist. We had their fries and fried pickle chips which were excellent. We got the curry sauce as well as some Barbeque sauces which paired perfectly. And I have to say the portions were large and more than expected, we even had enough to share with our friends! The various entrees were flavorful and tasty and not a bite was left of anything by the time we had looked up from our plates. It is very hearty fare so don't think salads and veggies but more things you eat on a cold night when wanting to be warm and cozy. But delicious! We have enjoyed this spot before and will again, so if you haven't tried it it is worth the effort. I want to try the fish n chips next time but the burger sounded so dang gone good! It's not often you see a hamburger come out cooked to order and it has steam coming out it was that fresh. My friend ordered a patty melt and said the same thing. You just don't see a burger come out that hot and to your table that fast! The sandwich was excellent!!! Fresh onions, lettuce, a huge slice of tomato, and this sandwich had fried pickles also. 10 out of 10 for it! Let's not forget the other star the "chips" fries for us. They looked like they cut them at the restaurant. They came out golden brown and had the right amount of salt and were very good. I like ranch to dip my fries in and asked for a side and the ranch they make has some dill in it. It was so good I would've bought a bottle of it. The waitress said people ask if they sell it by the bottle. That's a good sign that it's good! Speaking of our waitress she was great. Very attentive and yet not at our table all the time. Even with the pandemic, this place remains friendly and so quick with the food too. Of course they follow all the current health and safety regualtions. I took full advantage of the Yelp check in offer of free curry fries, which btw were absolutely delicious and such a huge amount of fries that I shared with the entire table. I also enjoyed the fried shrimp appetizer. Delicious, nice, crisp, hot and worth it. I probably could have asked for a little more of the aioli though. For my entree I chose the fish and chips, full portion ... on hindsight I could have done with half a portion. Oh well, live and learn, right? The fish was perfect. This was my second time to the Red Lion. Both times the service and food was excellent! The wait staff both times, different staff, were very attentive to our needs. Always making the food was to our liking and drinks were refreshed. I highly recommend the Fish and chips!! Very large pieces of fish and the chips are freshly made each day! The only issue I had was deciding what to order. The menu isn't large but full of lots of good sounding things. I ordered through DoorDash so I can't comment on the service or inside of the restaurant. Looking forward to going inside another day. My mom had the tenderloin and thought it was good. While most had the fish and chips or the bangers and mash I tried the stuffed portobello with mash potatoes and broccoli. The mushroom was huge and had a nice flavor. I had a Guinness for my appetizer and another for dessert. How could you need anything more! Also a nice pour with a shamrock in the foam. They are in fountain square! $38 for the 18 bone-in wings (Parmesan garlic and BBQ) as well as Grandmas Meatloaf. Both were good! It was so hot inside of the restaurant. This is a hidden gem. It's got very good food and a decent selection of beers. Also it's never too full, so you can just walk up and get a table no wait more easily than anywhere else in FSQ.
