Went to Red Lion on a Friday afternoon to try their fish and chips for the first time, and was immediately asked by the friendly greeter "Are you here for the free beer?" What the?? I thought he was pulling my leg but it was true! For a limited time they are offering free beer on Friday afternoons from 4-6 PM. I was not disappointed by the terrific fish and chips. They definitely lived up to their description, a huge piece of cod that was cooked to perfection, deliciously light and flaky. They also had Old Speckled Hen on tap, one of my fav British beers. Ok, I should start by saying I REALLY love the build your own poutine here and if there are other places that offer it in Milwaukee I have yet to find them! I've only actually eaten here twice, the other times I dropped in just for a drink or two... or ten depending on the night. Sadly one in two experiences was not good. Came around 2PM for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon and took a seat on the patio. I'm not sure if they were short staffed, but in total it took us about 2.5 hours to get through just one meal. It shouldn't take 30 minutes for someone to come to your table and get your drink order and then another 30 minutes to come back for a food order when you've clearly stated you will be eating. Then of course when our food arrived-poutine and a Rueben, they were cold. Sadly, if it wasn't for that scotch egg I'd never look back, but I've got to admit Red Lion knows what's up in that department. Not sure if understaffed or what but server told us she would get us water twice and after 20 minutes I just grabbed water for the table. 30 minutes after we placed our order the server came to apologize to tell us they were out of Shepards pie. I went in there on a Monday, just after 12:30pm. I've never been there before and the place looked interesting from the outside. The sign inside said to seat yourself and someone would be right there. There was one table of three and myself and a bartender. I sat and sat and no one acknowledged me. I wanted to look at a menu but then I saw that I had to scan the code with my phone to see a menu. Not Good. I couldn't find the app on my phone to scan and by this time I was getting annoyed that I couldn't get waited on and that I had couldn't just look at a menu. My boyfriend has been wanting to go here for the soccer games and atmosphere. Unfortunately our schedules don't match up for that, so we came for a drink and meal. On Thursdays that have 60cent wings. We had a buffalo sauce on them. The wings were large and meaty, definitely worth it! We also had a burger. The meat was average but the toasted bun made up for it. The steak fries were good as well. We sat at the bar and the service was friendly and efficient. Red Lion pub took over for the ailing Brocach just awhile back. I always Loved Brocach but this pub has far surpassed anything the previous restaurant could hope to be. Service is excellent and the food is superb. Monday's are a great night for one of the best Fish Fries in MKE. Crispy and tender Cod with a well crafted coleslaw to boot make me crave the fish n chips on the regular. Hat's off to the chef! I always get the roasted chips and HP Sauce. Special for sure. The bread pudding is really scrumptious and I order it despite being full. Also of note the Scotch Eggs, French Onion soup and Poutines. English pubs are the new Irish pub. Err...or something like that. I came here when it was Brocach, and I really liked the food. The menu and decor haven't seemed to change too dramatically but thankfully "Red Lion Pub" is a lot easier to pronounce than "you know, that Irish place by the river that starts with b.r." (that was how I explained it in conversation.) We came here to watch**American football** not the other kind. If you are into regular football, I guess they have a lot of matches and whatnot, but for the Packers vs. Bear's game, all four flatscreens in the downstairs bar had that game on. So there's a full British-y brunch menu going on, with bangers and eggs, full English breakfast, scotch eggs, etc. They also have a huge drink/beer menu, with lots of interesting concoctions using cider, guiness, etc. I tried one with Strongbow and some sort of blackberry stuff in it. it was a little too sweet for me so I switched to magners pear. Food: I had a pretty basic pub burger. I was hungry and it tasted pretty good, but if you're picky about burgers, know that the patty looked pretty pre-formed. It was fine and so were the thick cut fries. My DC had this awesome concoction called baked or creamy tomato? It was a super creamy tomato soup with a whole grilled cheese sandwich on top like a chewy cheesy giant crouton. There was more cheese on top of that. I had a little and it was great! Many of the brunch items ~$10. As mentioned, we were here for the game, and they do give out those standard sweet neon green shots when the packers score. It was a 20/something crowd on a Sunday afternoon as expected. (They had some Coors special going on for the game but Coors is somewhere way in the back of my mind and I'd like it to stay there, thank you.) Overall service was really good. There aren't a lot of tables but we never had to wait long before our server checked on us. I've been to the rooftop patio when it was brocach, and it still looks awesome (although we sat inside.) Other people have mentioned they have music and a band up there on Sunday evenings and we saw people going up with instrument's to set up as we were leaving. This 2 story building has the typical English Décor which makes you think you are sitting in a pub in London. There is also a very nice outdoor patio. The ambience is really quaint. They have a nice long beer list complete with plenty of choices from the UK. I ordered my usual Old Fashioned. It was hand muddled (yay!) but not very strong (boo!) All fish entrees are BOGO on Fridays, fish tacos, walleye or cod. That is a great deal! Our plates came and our lone piece of cod looked more like a piece of chicken fried steak! I've never seen a piece of cod that big. Our waitress let us know that they use to cut the fillet into 3 pieces but have recently been just frying the one large piece. This sounded amazing, until we got to the center of our fish and it was room temperature and the batter was mushy and uncooked. Yikes. The outside edges were quite tasty through and the batter had plenty of seasoning to it. Fries were great. (Yes, there was even vinegar on the tables!) The perfect English "chip". All in all, it was a neat experience and we may come back to try their other pub food, but I would skip the fish next time, unless they were going back to smaller pieces. read more

I had an Old Speckled Hen, it was really a refreshing break from all the IPA's I've been having. The rooftop soccer billiards table was closed for the season but they let us up anyway to check it out. I definitely need to go back in the spring and try playing. My partner and I wanted to get some corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick's day but we started out a little late and decided on Red Lion because it wasn't as busy as others serving St. Patty's day food. Our first time here after living not that far away was a most pleasant surprise. It didn't have the college vibe most restaurants have around here, it was casual and laid back, relaxing even. I ordered corned beef and cabbage, my partner the fish and chips. Both were amazing! corned beef was so flavorful, and the mashed potatoes, don't get me started on those fantastic mashed potatoes lol. I had to help my partner finish his fish because there was a LOT of flaky tasty yumm fish. Finally, our server was Stella, and they were absolutely amazing as well. We were in Milwaukee for the weekend and in search of some much needed breakfast. At least I was. My boyfriend had other priorities in mind, namely, watching his favorite English Premiere League soccer team play. He was deciding between two pubs, but then decided on Red Lion Pub. Super glad he did. We got there a few minutes into the game, and the bar was already full, but luckily there were plenty of tables still available. Our server brings us drink and brunch menus right away. I saw quite a few people drinking mimosas, and since it was sunny out, I felt it was only right to drink the same. My boyfriend was amused by all the Guinness and beer mixtures, so he went with the "Black Cow" drink, which was Guinness and New Glarus Spotted Cow. It was really tasty! For breakfast, we usually share a sweet dish and a savory dish. So we chose the Breakfast Burrito and the French Toast. Now, I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting much in terms of quality of food. I figured, we're in an English Pub, the food should be "just okay". Nope, the food was DELICIOUS! We were blown away with how good the food was. The chorizo from the burrito was hitting the spot after our night of drinking. The potatoes had a great flavor mixed with peppers. The french toast was awesome. We ended up staying there for a few hours, since we had time until our train back to Chicago, but the staff were all very nice. It was our first time here even though I've been wanting to stop in for some time now. As a soccer lover and Arsenal supporter it was fun to see all the soccer related decorations, despite them being mostly Tottenham (lol). We had the New Glarus cheese curds, which were very good, for an appetizer. I had the amazingly delicious English Fish 'n' chips, and my kids had the tenders and a chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich was grilled perfectly and came on a really good pretzel bun that tasted even better than it looked. I can not say enough about my fish n chips. I've eaten them in probably a hundred different places and this has to be one of my absolute favorites. Definitely worth the trip, especially since you won't have to cross the pond to enjoy some fantastic British food. My kids absolutely loved the Poolball court they had, think pool and soccer combined, that is essentially what it boils down to. Super fun, plus the giant Jenga and Checkers they offer makes it a great place to bring the kids too. There had to be at least 5 other menu items I wanted to try, including the Shepard's Pie, so we will most definitely be making a return trip very soon. We'll also have to come and check out a North London Derby as well, so we can show them who the more superior team in London is. Lol. read more

The appetizers we ordered (Scotch Eggs & Sausage Rolls) were so good and filling that we barely had room for the entree. We shared the Cottage Pie which had great flavor and was good meal to top off the visit. The beverage selection was a nice change of pace as opposed to most places. One of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood. This place has great beers on tap, most you can't find in other bars in the city, and excellent English style food. Great atmosphere for lunch or for a sporting event. One of my friend's weddings was catered from here and the food was excellent. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a pub like atmosphere. Once while here, my friends and I drank all the bottles of one of their beers and the manager left the bar to go buy more for us instead of making us drink something else. I've been here twice in the past week for different events and had a good experience both times. I went on a Sunday morning to watch the Tottenham Hotspurs soccer game with the Milwaukee Spurs fan group. How great to be able to watch your favorite European team with other fans here in Milwaukee! My boyfriend and I shared the corned beef breakfast and indulged in some of their great breakfast cocktails. All of it was very tasty! They get very busy during these games so service was somewhat slow, but that's understandable. I came back a week later for their Quizmaster Game of Thrones Trivia night. The bar went all out with themed drinks and food, which was a nice touch to the evening. I got their burger option on a gluten free bun ($10+$1 for bun). I asked for it to be medium but it was closer to well done but still good. The fries that accompanied it were also pretty good. Though it was busy, the bartender was attentive and friendly. Upon entering the bar, we were immediately greeted by bartender Luca who was warm, friendly, and accommodating. He offered us menus and told us to sit wherever we were comfortable. I selected 2 and Luca selected the others for me. They were all fantastic. I really like the decor, but if it's not for you, there is a nice view of a park across the way. This is a great, casual neighborhood place! This is a go-to for my boyfriend and me, and we've even gotten to know some of the staff a little bit. Kevin immediately welcomed us to the neighborhood when we moved here and has since become a friend. And we more recently met JP, who introduced us to a delicious Scotch drink to give us a taste of his native country. In addition to great staff, the food really pleasantly surprised us. The first time we went, we were expecting standard bar food, but it is really actually gourmet! In addition to standard American restaurant food, they also have a variety of English dishes, which have all been delicious. It's been a while (a year or so) since I've been, but my partner & I tried to go yesterday. We sat outside on the patio where there were 2 or 3 other occupied tables and waited a while before my partner got up and started walking towards the bar to see if anyone was around. He was told a server will come around, so he came back and we waited. While waiting, I figured I'd use the restroom. I didn't even notice the sink was broken until after, when I needed to use it. So I had to walk to the bar with soap on my hands and ask what to do, basically, and an employee told me I could use the bar sink... That didn't make me want to stay for food or drinks, so I went back outside to see we still hadn't been greeted, and we left. I doubt I'll go back, especially because I didn't realize the really unique and fun pool ball area was removed. Visited for Sunday brunch and was beyond pleasantly surprised. I started my meal out with the Scotch Eggs and was so glad that I did! The perfect mix of flavors and done just right. We tried this place after a trip to England and were really craving great fish n chips. Unfortunately, we didn't realize that going at 12:30pm on a Saturday would still be the brunch menu. They would not make an exception to still let us order the fish n chips, which is just kind of lame. Instead, we ordered the breakfast poutine and the full English breakfast. Poutine had a good taste but didn't meet our high poutine standards - fries were too thick and ended up being a one big mushy mash under the gravy. Cheese curds were served as melted globs instead of curds. The English breakfast was pretty authentic and comparable to what we had in England. Not too much you can mess up with grilled tomatoes and over-easy eggs. Sausages had a weird texture (per the hubbs) and weren't eaten. We'd probably still like to try the fish n chips at some point but nothing overly wow'd us about the food we had. read more

Been here 4 times, and each visit has been generic in the best way possible. Service is adequate, but not overly helpful. I've actually only ever been seated in the upper floor section, or outside on second floor, but not sure the experience would be any different on first floor? Food is good- classics like the scotch egg, fish fry and the Reuben are not to be missed. If you are there during a sports game, be forwarned- all TV's will be tuned to that with sound blaring! Plus several Guinness floats - Black Cow is my favorite that I've tried. I haven't had a full meal here, but apps have been good to snack on. Prices for food seem a little high for a pub. During the season, you can watch soccer matches inside. Pretty much any league or tournament will be playing. Otherwise, they do movie nights, trivia, and other events too. Given most bar food, I went in not really expecting much but it was really good! My mom said that the bangers and mash were better than she had had in Ireland which is crazy. I had the vegan shepherds pie which had warm Indian spices. My sister had the fish and chips which was battered nicely and the "chips" were a great texture. Came with curry sauce, mashed peas, and tarter sauce. The curry was more sweet than spicy but was nicely flavored. For dessert we had the sticky toffee pudding à la mode which is served warm so the ice cream just melts into the cake in a creamy, sweet, mouthwatering mélange. The beer list is a lot of imports, as you would expect. I had also gone here just for drinks a while back to play their soccer pool which is a really neat idea. It's a field with 6 holes like a pool table but instead of pool balls there are soccer balls and you hit the white cue soccer ball into the others to get them in the holes. Pretty neat. Good for a summer hangout that's a little more athletic than pool but less effort than real soccer. read more

The Marquette Young Alumni Association hosts it's basketball game watching parties here, and even though I am no longer young, that group of folks always make me feel welcome as I hang out and network to build awareness of Marquette's Comm Alumni Association. What an outstanding venue! The Red Lion has a cozy separate space upstairs that lends itself well to a group of 35-40 people. It's a perfect gathering space. The bartenders keep the Olde English pub spirit alive with their accents and sense of humor - very fun and funny. It's so charming and quaint - the perfect backdrop for having fun and watching basketball. The venue also offers food and drink specials. I like to order the "Cheatham's Curds" for $4. Passing those out to other game watchers is a great way to share the wealth and make new friends, although they are so yummy I want to keep them all to myself. They've got other specially-priced items on the menu including wings, cheeseburgers, and other pub fare. Drink specials and shots too!
