They completely gutted both bars and it has been lovingly restored to a classy Victorian back street boozer. As a free house they usually have 4-5 real ales on tap which are well looked after and maintained. The clientele are a mixed bunch representing most of the community in Hythe. They have regular live music performances and held a real ale festival in August which was very popular, with over 30 ales on tap at various points of the weekend. There are two bars, and there is the idea to introduce food on the right hand bar at some point. The garden has been completely worked over to provide a covered and heated smoking area, and this has been very popular. Busy on the weekends. The venue is very much an old pub, in a good way. Low ceilings, wooden beams, nooks and crannies to hide in etc. The menu is fairly extensive, and they offer the option of having a smaller portion - an idea I LOVE! I was here with my father, who loves liver and bacon, so he had the smaller portion of that, while I had a cheese and pickle sandwich. Pa's food was lovely - it was a pretty big plateful, so heaven knows what the ordinary portion is like! The liver and bacon were cooked just right and the veg was fab. My sandwich could have done with a lot more cheese, and a lot less bread. I had opted for 'brown' bread, but it was in fact granary. I don't usually mind that at all, except it was a doorstep with lots of bits in it, ready to get stuck between the teeth. Also, the lettuce it was served with had seen better days, and I don't understand the concept of putting lettuce with pickle. It's just wrong!! The table behind us was celebrating a birthday, but were too embarrassed to sing while the cake was brought out - so we and several other tables joined in to make a noise. They were very pleased, but didn't offer us a slice of birthday cake... On balance we enjoyed it, it was good value and friendly service, but I wouldn't bother going back here, as there are other places to try in Hythe that look more inspiring.

We had a trusty old baked Camembert with bread and salad to share to start - the cheese was great, the bread wedges generous but rather tasteless but a fresh small salad and the red currant jelly was a nice touch. I had planned to have the broccoli, mushroom and cheese pie but saw the specials board and ended up with the red pepper, spinach and mushroom stroganoff with saffron rice. The rice was fluffy but with little flavour but the stroganoff was lovely with gene ou nicely textured mushrooms and a good flavour. My partner loved his liver and bacon very much. Having been surprised by the tastiness of the first two courses, we went for pudding. My boyfriend's Eton Mess was great my all accounts with tasty strawberries. I had white chocolate and lime cheesecake with vanilla ice cream. It had a good texture, a tasty base, but sadly tasted of nothing really. The ice cream was bog standard vanilla and quite forgettable. The place itself has character with an sizeable fireplace which I would expect is great when lit. The carpet looked really dirty and was seriously overdue for a clean. Most of the staff were pleasant and helpful though some people were getting somewhat fraught and abrupt service at other tables.

The prices are very reasonable and they do a brisk trade at lunch times. Nice to see that they also keep a discount for older customers who are watching the pennies. wide selection of beers and the real ales are well kept. Outside in the summer there is a lovely Petanque bowling area a large grassy area and a heater thingie for the smokers. Good alround family pub and restaurant.

The selection of beers was not good, and the real ale we tried was certainly past its best. We did not stay to sample the food. There is a pool table, and a darts board and with a bit of care and attention this could be a great pub, but I get the feeling it has been left to rot. The tables were dirty, with empty glasses not being cleared away, notice boards had messages for events, which were out of date. Does have regular live bands so perhaps the place livens up then, but I have never ventured in again.

The decor is minimal but not at all austere despite it being a large space, mostly because it's all wood and subtle colours. Real napkins on the tables! Along the whole length of one wall is an amazing wooden shelving unit / dresser with drawers. It was discovered out in the garage when the new people opened the restaurant and was made for the general stores which is what this building had been when it first opened. There are fantastic lamps on the walls - incandescent bulbs with gorgeous twisty filaments in metal cages. Lovely. Anyway, the menu was small but unusual. Once we had seen the menu we decided to have a little more than a croissant! I chose scrambled eggs with chives and cream; my partner had charred mackerel with pickled cherries. There was not a lot when it arrived but it was delicious and with a gorgeous creamy texture. It came with slices of soda bread toast, griddles with olive oil. The combination was delicious. My partner loved his fish, which looked not far off raw and loved the pickled cherries too. As this had been so good we decided to try the wonderfully named Dirty, filthy cheesecake! So named because they mix in another pungent cheese. Today it was stinking bishop! When it arrived as a small portion with currants and grapes and a red wine reduction it was delicious. Very firm and dense and with a definite taste of something pungent lurking in the background. Unusual. We decided to finish with a latte each and agreed afterwards that it was a top class cup of coffee. Service was very friendly, the cakes on the counter looked great, the cocktails sounded extra special and Dan is a bit of a cocktail whizz by all accounts. Also, the wine list was individual and had obviously been chosen thoughtfully. Sadly, as we still had our early morning hats on we didn't feel wine was appropriate ... We were very impressed and would have loved a return visit but due to the press of the weekend it didn't happen.
