The Sedona Red Rock News is THE local newspaper. If it looks like a small town paper, hey yes this is a small town. It is oddly reassuring to read articles about how one person stole a truck and was arrested a little while later. Planning commission and city council debates are carried in almost the detail of the actual minutes. Stories like this wouldn't even be noticed in a major city. Besides stories on everything happening around town, it has a community calendar that is regularly updated, public notices, advertisements and discounts for the local businesses and entertainment, and articles written by members of many local social clubs. My favorite column is the Backyard Gardener, by Jeff Schalau of the University of Arizona. This column is teaching me how to look at my own property, on which I have inherited 60 years of other persons' landscaping decisions. What is that plant over there? Is it a native plant or a weed? How do I reduce water usage and still have a decent looking yard? All these questions are in the rotation; he has been writing since 1998. The Sedona Red Rock News comes out twice a week, and is delivered to my mail box. I follow it on facebook and twitter, but until I received the paper edition I didn't know I was missing more than half of the available information.
