The Young Women's Leadership Academy is public all female school. Combined middle school and high…read moreschool, there are 330 students total. As a former student, I would to address my comments, concerns, questions, and criticismn just as the principal would ask after addressing issues. First, I would like to share positive comments about the campus. This school has outstanding teachers that take pride in their role for these young women. Many students have been successful thanks to our teachers. In my opinion, this was the only thing that stood out to me from my years as being a student here. Next are my concerns. My first concern is how the campus functions during extreme climate. The school needs to do a better job with the air conditioning and heating system throughout the campus. Students constantly complain about the freezing classrooms or the hot gym which leads to my next address. Here at YWLA, there is a strict uniform policy. One thing that the administration is constantly reminding us about is outerwear such as jackets, hoodies, sweaters, anything meant to keep your daughter warm during the cold season. It worries me that the school cannot keep up with keeping our students warm during the winter or cool during the summer. Along with the uniform required for your daughter comes with an expense. The leadership, casual, and wellness uniform, along with Spirit wear can costs parents an excessive amount of money. For some families, uniforms do not arrive in time for the school year. With this issue, it can cause your daughter to get detention or a write up. Besides these critical items needed for your daughter to succeed at this campus, the academics and athletics might not meet you or your daughter's expectations. Academically, YWLA has only few students per grade level receive A-Honor Roll. Coming from a school that tries to emphasize outstanding scores on exams, it might not be satisfactory for some. The school does present challenges as it does have students participate in advanced classes. It concerns me how students have the potential to grow academically and yet do not show progress sometimes in curriculum. On the other hand, if your daughter is a competitive athlete and is willing to join UIL sports, this campus may not satisfy that. This school used to have many sports for both middle and high school. A few years later, sports such as softball, wrestling, soccer, and tennis were removed from middle school and basketball and volleyball were removed from the high school. I will acknowledge that the high school has been successful in certain sports but the middle school athletics program does not deliver the same results. Unfortunately, the number of girls participating in a sport at this campus is low. Teams have become smaller and try-out sports don't seem like it. This what also caused high school basketball and volleyball to be removed due to the lack of students to complete a freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity team. I do not have any questions for this campus but I do have some final words of criticism. I believe the administration for this campus is not at its best. I found the principal, assistant principal, counselor, and security guard to be mostly disrespectful to many students. These administrators enforced rules in a way that students did not appreciate. Small choices can turn into ISS or a referral. As much as they try to keep students in check, they create an environment for students not to feel comfortable or able to express themselves. For being a small population school, I believe these girls deserve adults who show kindness and not portray fear to some. I understand the academy has strict policies, but many rules are not fair. The campus has girls who get bullied because of their interests or the way they express themselves. During my time there, many girls struggled with mental-health and I have never seen a school with students that haven't been to reach out to an adult. I hope my opinion on the counselor can change because I am disappointed that so many had to struggle when they could've received help from someone who acts trustworthy. That is all I have to say for this school. I hope this serves you as a realistic outline of what to expect if you decide to enroll your daughter here.

According to state test scores, 37% of students are at least proficient in math and 77% in reading. So the focus is on academics and emphasis is put on academics. They hosted the IQ competition this January which was a lot of fun.

Dear to who may concern, As a concerned parent of idea from…read morehorizon I was made aware of the situation that happened on Tuesday March 31st at 1:45pm. I am here to inform the news outlet in hope to get something done for once about this serious acts. Not only does the school not inform up on time what is going on with any situation, but the constant bullying that happens within the school. The principal Mrs. Velazquez didn't address these situations and is dismissive of this kind of situations. I, myself have made several reports to the teachers and principals that my son was being bullied and no repercussions have been done. The principal (Mrs Velazquez) only makes the students sign papers and that's it. No other punishment is done toward the students who are being bullies. My son is scared and has told teachers including the principal and when I show up to have a meeting with them, they seem careless and derisive. They let things get bad to the point where a scared student has to take a weapon to protect himself. As I am not trying to defend the student for making that decision but I am trying to make it a point where this school doesn't take anything serious until something bad happens. I've tried reaching to anyone higher up and all gets shut down. Now I'm taking this to the new so something can actually get done about this problem going on within the school itself. There are children scared for their life where they are being threatened outside of school as well and at this point it is not only the safety for the children but also the family members and the community. At this point it is other people lives that are in danger. Nothing is being done and we don't hear anything in the news to make this situation made aware of. I urge local leaders, school districts, and the community to treat bullying with the seriousness it deserves. Our children's safety both physical and emotional should never be overlooked. We need more awareness, stricter anti-bullying policies, and better support systems in schools. This includes access to counselors, clear reporting systems, and real accountability for harmful behavior. Just as importantly, we must create environments where children feel heard, respected, and safe.

Before sending your child here, Google IDEA Public schools in Texas. Read the teacher reviews, the…read moreex-employee reviews, and even a student testimonial! I felt so lost as to why my daughter was being treated a certain way until I read the reviews and had a multitude of epiphanies. The plan is to move her to Soccoro ISD as soon as possible. After more than a few uncomfortable or unpleasant experiences since the start of this school year, my wife and I decided to dig a bit deeper on the IDEA chain of schools. Not doing so sooner is a regret she and I share. For a little bit there we couldn't quite put our fingers on why exactly we were feeling such discontent with Horizon Vista until our child came home visibly upset on the FIRST day of school citing that their PE that day was allegedly "walking around a field with their backpacks on." I was a little taken aback by this idea since they're in elementary school and not the military but everything with a grain of salt. Maybe her description was inaccurate but the fact she would say something so specific was enough to catch my attention. As the weeks passed my child began coming home more and more upset and just.... kind of beat down. Daily. Continuing my own personal denial, I chalked it up to my child being whiny. "It's 'college prep,' it's supposed to be harder. You'll live, just try harder." The remorse I feel for feeding her that narrative while all along that is basically what she gets nonstop at school is insurmountable. Somehow our little bookworm who loves school so much she'd give up her Summer Break was miserable in her element. The cherry on top of it all is that she claims the adults who work here are the unpleasant ones, not the kids. Is education serious business? Of course. Do I want my child to graduate high school? Absolutely. To go to college? If she so chooses. But fun has its place in school and the only fun Ive witnessed was during a halfhearted, two hour bounce house "party?" that just ended up being some sort of a recruitment strategy to expand their student body and therefore their funding. That's what they seem to care about. My kid has a cognitive disability but has done wonders in school across 3 states. But after reading those reviews online, maybe they're trying to make her miserable on purpose. Which is an outlandish thought, I know. And I think most parents want to claim their child is not the problem and point fingers at the facility and/or faculty. But this is ridiculous. There's so much more than this vague review details but my wife and I are just trying to start the conversation. Read the reviews first before enrolling and check their stats! Also if a faculty member puts their hands on my child again while she's unfortunately still attending this charter, I will respond in kind. "Miss a day, miss a lot!" Bite me.
