I made the order from GrubHub. it was a very simple order. I ordered pork dim sum, and I ordered their Chinese ribs. To me certain things are just basic's for an American/Chinese restaurant. Fried rice, egg roll, & Chinese Ribs. Now this restaurant makes great Chinese ribs. Don't get me wrong. It is extremely pricey. Four dollars per rib or 16 for four ribs. Nonetheless, they are generous in size and I ordered it. Now here is the problem, halfway through my order I received a text from GrubHub telling me that Red Sun do not have the Chinese ribs that I ordered, so they dropped it from my order. I would not have made the order at all if that was going to happen. I then immediately called the actual restaurant instead of GrubHub. Whoever answered, the phone said, although when saying it, he seemed very confused, he said, maybe they'll have it next week. And then ask, can I speak to a manager. Three minutes later, they said oh we just found ribs! no, I made the order. I'm what you would expect to be one of their busiest nights, it was Friday at 5 PM. The simple order is as simple as asking for eggs at Perkins Sunday morning at 9 AM. I then nicely said, great, could you just add it back to my original order? I was told it would be easier for you to just cancel the order altogether and then start again. I am not certain, but I already had been waiting a while before they even told me to cancel it and to go further I don't know if I would've been charged to cancel it. I just accepted the dim sum and was disappointed by not getting what I originally ordered which was there all along. to me, these basic items are similar to asking for cappuccino at Starbucks. It was a major mess with the order, and as I said, it really makes me think twice about ordering from this restaurant again. chances are they always have ribs, but they're people that work there don't know how to handle it read more

This was our first time trying Red Sun. The dining rooms are large and nicely decorated. We had eggroll and crab wontons for appetizers. The eggroll had a few ingredients that aren't always in eggrolls including peanut butter and even the person who doesn't normally like eggroll liked this one. The crab wonton was nice with a mild not too fishy crab flavor. The generals chicken was really well balanced. I appreciated the lovely fluffy brown rice as an option and even sharing the one entrée we had leftovers. On this somewhat busy Saturday night our service was not very good. We got bare minimum visits and no attempts at suggestions or questions about how our meal was going plus appetizers and dinner came out essentially simultaneously. I just threw out 80$ of "food." Do not trust the Stock photos on the online menu. We were given Raw boiled chicken with skin in the pad Thai. No hint of flavor on the noodles. Seasame chicken was deep fried parts with about 2 pints of funky sweet orange sauce. Seasame tofu was the same - inedible. Thick spongey coating made it unrecognizable. Again the photos showed a decent looking dishes so we took a chance. Fresh shrimp spring rolls smelled like bad fish. Crispy spring rolls were fine. Probably frozen If I had more energy I would have brought it all back. There's no way those people eat what they just served. Please steer clear. I ordered dinner via GrubHub for pickup from Red Sun (on a Sunday night) and my order was ready in about 10 minutes. I got the honey chicken with fried rice and four pan fried pork dumplings. The dumplings were large and the pork was well seasoned. I really liked their flavor. The honey chicken is exactly what it sounds like. It's breaded white meat chicken with honey sauce and crispy noodles atop. The honey flavor was simple and really good. The breading was light and crispy and the chicken was nice, full pieces. The rice was just okay. It was sticky (good), but the flavor was kind of bland. I liked my meal here and I appreciated how quickly it was ready. If you go, their entrance is behind Sakura Home (there are clear signs for both restaurants). I'd order from here again for sure! read more

A pretty good Chinese food option in Pittsford. Not my number one Chinese restaurant by any means, but still a good option in the area. We ordered the cucumber salad, a hot & sour soup, Mapo tofu and Walnut Shrimp. The cucumber salad was a bit on the sweet side, but the pickled cucumber were nicely balanced with heat from the peppers. The hot & sour soup was pretty average, nothing to write home about. While the appetizers were ordinary, our main dishes were actually very good. The Mapo tofu had tons of flavor without being overly oily or meaty. It could have used a little more heat, but my girlfriend liked it. The Walnut Shrimp was very good too. Again, a bit on the sweet side, but the shrimp were perfectly deep fried with a lot crispiness while remaining relatively oil free. While the main dishes were good, I still thought they were over-sweetened and definitely geared towards Western taste buds. Not necessarily a bad thing though. I also thought that the seafood was expensive. As good as it was, $24 for the Walnut Shrimp is not worth it in my opinion. Even though the portions are generous, it's overpriced. Also the live Guzheng music is somewhat gimmicky. I'm not mad, since it does introduce people to the Chinese instrument, but I just don't need it while i'm eating dinner. Strangely formal place that serves Americanized Chinese food. Inside is gorgeous that you'll feel like you entered some 5 star dining or something from a fancy movie. However, I was a little underwhelmed w/ the options. It was a little funny that once the waiters realized that I spoke Mandarin, they offered me a more "Chinese" menu but even then I wasn't too impressed with the options and the price. I wished they offered more authentic things and leaned away from the Sesame Chicken and things that felt borrowed from PF Chang's. 3.5 stars round down to 3. If you like the sub niche Americanized Chinese cuisine, this is a good place. Ordered their "3 types" on the chinese menu; this was a little bit of 3 protein appetizers- braised beef, sliced cold pork, and duck. I actually thought this was their best dish. It was very Chinese but required skill to make and I really wished they served more of this kind of stuff that may intimidate non Asian customers, but it showed so much promise for the upcoming dishes! These dishes require skill in marination, chilling, and slow cooking to get such beautiful marbling and tenderness in protein. The next dishes were a little underwhelming despite me noting that they probably tried hard and the chef probably did work hard, but it just tasted cheap despite the work put into it. We got the pork chop w/ pepper; the sauce was the sweet sour red radioactive like stuff you see at the buffet. The pork chop itself was delicious and the peppers were fresh. I just think gosh, if the sauce didn't have such an Americanized flavor, this would have been a knockout dish. I felt like this restaurant is actually very good but it's like it was insecure of its offerings and Americanized things last minute. Like, it's as if though the chef is good but then last minute thought, oh heck, the customers dunno how to eat this kind of stuff, better dump some of that general tso stuff in that bottle. If PF Chang's and cheap American Chinese food had a baby, it would be Red Sun. The interior looks like a less gringo version of PF Chang's - vaguely Asian, oddly formal, pretty, low lit and comfortable. The menu featured American Chinese favourites like Sesame Chicken but also fancy American Chinese items like chicken lettuce wraps, honey chicken, Mongolian beef, etc. My friend enjoyed the sweet and sour chicken. My kung pao chicken was much tastier than I expected. The egg drop soup and spring roll included in my lunch special were both average. I chose the vegetable fried rice ($1 upcharge) to accompany my kung pao chicken. It had some flavour - better than most bright yellow "fried" rice served around Rochester. I have also tried the Mongolian beef and black pepper chicken via GrubHub - both were very good. The service was swift and civil. My lunch special was $9.95 (before tax/tip). All in all, it made for a quick and reasonably priced lunch. Next time you want to go to PF Chang's, check out Red Sun instead. The menu is comparable and it is locally owned. This is also an excellent choice for those who love Americanized Chinese food and want to dine somewhere with some ambiance. Sooo disappointed in this restaurant. I came for lunch service during peak time and there were only two other tables occupied till 2pm the entire time I was there. The decor inside in really nice and well decorated. I enjoyed the zen of the soft music and water feature at the end of the dining room. The service was cold and uninviting. I ordered one of the lunch specials that comes with soup, choice of egg roll and rice. I got the sesame chicken with hot and sour soup, egg roll and fried rice. The fried rice and hot and sour soup is an up charge of $1 each. All of the food was terrible. The soup was just luke warm and goopy. The rice was ice cold. I wanted to try because many people have said good things. So, I ordered delivery. The people were right! This food was slammin'! I got cashew chicken with fried rice. The chicken was so tender and high-quality that it made me realize that I've had Asian this good very few times in my life! The rice also just seemed to be fried lightly and was perfection. The reason for 4 stars is that my egg roll tasted very oily. I'm not sure if the oil needed to be changed or if it was the type of oil? Red Sun is a beautiful new addition to the Chinese restaurant scene. Yinghui welcomed us to the artfully decorated dining room complete with a stunning fountain fish pool and Chinese stone and ceramic art pieces. The menu is eclectic and there are some offerings that are new to us in a Chinese restaurant including orange- flavored dishes. The old style noodles and teapot are not served as starters. Instead try the soothing green tea. Soup is served with a ceramic spoon in plated bowls that are lovely. The menu items we especially enjoyed were the egg drop soup, hot and sour soup, crab Rangoon beeand sesame chicken. I was here for dinner one weekend and was pleasantly surprised about the interior of the restaurant. It is nicely decorated with pretty lanterns, Chinese themed pottery and a beautiful bamboo wall in the back. They even have a small bar! There is a connection to the Japanese restaurant in the front of the building. We also got to hear live Chinese music played on that one rectangular guitar instrument. The waitress was very nice and service was efficient. The owner even came out to ask us how our experience was at the end, which was nice :) I must say for the prices I was expecting more of family size dishes. You'd be best to order multiple dishes and share. Oh also they give you those crispy wonton chips as a complementary snack. For apps we started with the shumai and shrimp dumplings. I was quite disappointed with these two dishes. The shumai were tiny, barely filled the dim sum container. There was a sad looking tiny shrimp in each of them...and the taste was too fishy for me. The shrimp dumplings were your standard ones, with little shrimp flavor and not very memorable. I would not recommend the dim sum at this restaurant. For entrees I had the beef scallops and my boyfriend had the orange peel beef. The beef scallops is not a good value dish. You get 4 scallops, a moderate amount of beef slices and the rest are filled with veggies. I was expecting a lot more flavor from the brown sauce, it didn't really have the savory taste that I wanted. The scallops were not overcooked though once again it lacked any sort of flavor. The beef was tender though and was great with the rice that the dish came with. At $25 though, this wasn't worth the money. My boyfriend's orange peel beef was really good. It's more of an American Chinese dish you'd expect from a take out restaurant, except more nicely presented. The tanginess of the orange peel complemented the tender beef slices well. Pair it with rice and you'll love it. Maybe my taste has been Americanized but I would be very happy with this dish instead of mine haha. My boyfriend also got a flight of sake. It came with 3 flavors, original, cucumber and coconut. This is a great value for what you get since they give you a lot of each kind. I loved the refreshing crisp taste of the cucumber one and the coconut one was my favorite. It was rich but with alcohol! Overall, Red Sun is a higher quality type of Chinese restaurant where you can get a mix of authentic and American Chinese cuisine. Red Sun Chinese Cuisine has great interior design, lovely authentic live Chinese music played on Fridays and Saturday nights, and a diverse menu that accommodates vegetarian and gluten-free diets. I ate here with a group of 7 and we received seating slightly away from the music (to better hear each other talk) as I had requested when making the reservation. Our group's experience with the food ranged from dislike to strong like. Some thought their food was not spicy enough, others were very satisfied. My dish was pretty good but not too exciting. My mother, who was in attendance, complained that the meal seemed expensive for what we were getting. My partner's order came out totally wrong the first time (missing key vegetables), then the second time it came back it was missing the spices. The server seemed perceptive and in touch with the issue, leading me to believe it was a communication issue with the kitchen. It is a relatively new restaurant, but it was a fairly substantial mistake to make with the order. In addition, a member of the staff leaned against the light switch controlling the lights in our area, temporarily dimming the setting considerably, although this was more amusing than anything else. Overall I believe this restaurant has some work to do before they are a 5-Star, but I definitely had a nice experience and believe they could totally get to 5 stars with more consistent service to match the price point. read more

I was thinking about them all day, and now I've made a decision that their salt and pepper scallops were absolutely the best scallops I've had in Rochester...... and I've had them all! I have been looking for a quality dine in Chinese Restaurant for several years after a couple of our old favorites closed, and I think I have found it. My wife and I enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and comfortable surroundings. Our server was attentive and prompt throughout our meal. We started with the wonton soup which had a very flavorful broth. Best we've found anywhere. For appetizers we had the pork dumplings (which we both thought were ok but not great) and the Vietnamese spring rolls (we both thought these were excellent). For dinner my wife had the Double Delight (chicken & shrimp with peppers and onions in a slightly spicy sauce) and I had the Happy Family (beef, shrimp, scallops, and a variety of vegetables in a white sauce). We both sampled each other's and agreed both entrees were excellent. Be aware that dinner is a little on the pricey side, but we thought it was well worth it. I have visited this new Chinese restaurant 4 times and have enjoyed it every time.They were very new the first time and a few things were in need of tweaking.Nothing serious but I can say they have remedied the little issues.I think the lunch specials are very good and a good value.I still think they should change the current tea service i.e they charge for a glass of tea whereas most others will include a pot of hot tea for the table.What could this possibly cost and what could it gain in goodwill? Worst experience in a restaurant EVER. Ordered online for a 1:45 pm pick-up for takeout, ordered the two most common items on any Chinese menu: hot & sour soup and eggrolls. Arrived at one minute prior to pick up time and there is literally NO ONE in the restaurant, just a sign saying dining is in the Japanese sister restaurant up front, if no one is at desk call the phone number shown on sign. Called, no answer. Waited a few minutes, called again, still no answer. Walked up front to Japanese place shouting "hello", got no answer. Prep chef at sushi bar went to tell someone. FINALLY a young woman came out (the hostess I assume) at 1:50. Told me my order would be ready in 10 minutes. When I pointed out it was supposed to be ready already, she just repeated it would be ready in 10. Finally got my order at 2:01, no apology, no extras for making me wait the extra 15 minutes for my takeout. There was literally NO ONE ELSE in the entire restaurant besides staff, so they couldn't have been too busy. Got the food home and not only did they not include the usual crispy noodles for the soup, the egg rolls were overcooked and really nothing special. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!!!! read more

But what is especially wonderful about this place is not only the authenticity of the food, but also the fact that you are free to also order from the sushi menu that is right next door. After seeing an advertisement for this establishment during a night at the movies, I decided to give it a try. As a foodie, I think it's a good idea to try new establishments and dishes, so I bypassed Plum Garden, determined to satisfy my hankering for sesame chicken. For a little over $20 I experienced the worst sesame chicken I've ever had. Foolishly, I ignored prior reviews that mentioned how overpriced Red Sun is. I'm not certain if it's because I ordered and picked up my meal close to closing time, but I've had far better sesame chicken at Aja Noodle. The waitstaff, who was vacuuming when I arrived, was pleasant and my food arrived quite fast. The chicken was soft, had very few sesame seeds with flavor and appearance more like sweet and sour chicken. The fried rice also lacked flavor and had little to no soy sauce or seasoning. The saving grace was my order of spring rolls, which were very tasty and properly cooked. Red Sun has officially filled this void. It's located in the same building as the hibachi place which is peculiar to me, but it makes parking easy I guess since they share a lot and I think they are owned by the same folks. Anyhow, the food and service here is just good. First off the menu has the standard chinese fare but with a few twists here and there and it's just more refined...think half as many chicken dishes, but what they do they do well. The egg rolls...so often they are soaking in grease but they tasted WAY better here. I went with sesame chicken to be safe and it was just plain good...the broccoli was crisp..the sauce not too sweet and sticky. I ordered a moscow mule which was ok, but they may need some refinement on their cocktails. Everyone at our table got some type of chicken dish and we all almost cleaned our plates. In search of "upscale" Chinese food one night, my husband and I decided to try the newly opened Red Sun. You have to know that it's on the SIDE of the building with the hibachi place, or you'll completely pass by it. It seemed that the 2 restaurants connected, because there were people coming in from a different door than the side door I came in. And some of the table items said Sakura Home. The place is nicely designed and has a romantic ambiance. There's a slightly separate area (elevated up a step or 2) where a large party of 20 or so people were seated during my visit. Everything was clean and decorated tastefully - no complaints here! The service was fine. Like I said, we went soon after opening. It seemed that the waitress didn't quite know the menu yet. When my husband ordered, she had to look at the menu to see what he was talking about. It kind of reminded me of Kristen Wiig's SNL character, the Target lady. The waitress seemed genuinely excited to hear about this menu option, as if it was the first time she was hearing about it. If the skit holds true, she went in the back and ordered the dish herself, immediately! But still, the place was new, no points deducted for this! The waitress was pleasant and attentive. The food was good, but it wasn't anything I'd describe as "upscale." I crave Chen Garden sometimes but am wary of the place after the roach incident. Red Sun wasn't quite up to the quality of Chen Garden food. Chen Garden will serve all white meat chicken, but there was no option for this at Red Sun. My sesame chicken was good (I was in a very "standard" Chinese food mood), but it wasn't over the top. It was dark meat chicken, but there weren't any gross fatty pieces, so that was a plus. My husband got the Sichuan-style beef and said it was fine, also. The spring rolls were great, but I have to admit I've never actually had a restaurant screw those up! So that's standard, as well. What a great addition to the area! By far the best Chinese food I have had since moving to Pittsford a year ago. The decor is warm and inviting as are the wait staff and management. While it is currently just a soft opening, it is obvious that the owners have prepared well. This is a great place for either a quiet dinner with friends, a family dinner or a business meeting. This restaurant has excellent food that is both new to ROCHESTER and prepared with care. Unfortunately the service left a lot to be desired. Noodles not delivered at seating, hot oil didn't come in time to use and waiter was not attentive. 5-star possible with training. Restaurant is new and hopefully problems will go away RG read more

Ordered from Grubhub. First time customers of their restaurant. They changed our order for some reason. Swapped out smaller orders of everything, so there wasn't enough food for the four of us. Called to complain and the woman hung up on my wife. Terrible customer service. Not worth dealing with these people. read more

First time coming to red sun after reading some really good reviews. The restaurant is very nicely decorated. There was also a woman playing some background music on a guzheng (Chinese harp like instrument). We were seated quickly and our server Gabby was great! My mother was a little worried when she saw that the menu was entirely in English. Short but good menu with a solid amount of options. Gabby read our minds and brought out another menu with more traditional Chinese dishes that were also in Chinese (Mandarin). We ordered and our food was brought out somewhat quickly. We ordered beef shank but when it came and we tasted the dish, it was more like pork. We asked gabby and she talked to the chef. The chef said it was pork and it was his mistake and they brought the beef shank out at no extra charge.
