Everyone is given a Five Points chalice to take home and the opportunity to purchase more beer onsite. When I took the tour in May 2016, a row of banquet tables were set up in the heart of the brewery. In total, we were a group of 23 enthusiastic guests- only four of us had never been on a brewery tour before- and the majority were familiar with the Five Points' range. As we considered each beer in turn, we were provided with approximately half a glass each to swill. Questions were encouraged throughout the two hour tour and company representatives demonstrated exhaustive background knowledge of the company and beer in general. We were whisked around the brewery floor, invited to climb ladders and peer inside a kettle, then to stick our heads inside the mash tun. We became acquainted with the bottling line, a hand-me-down from Beavertown Brewery, which could fill up to 2,200 bottles per hour. The canning line can manage up to 3,600 cans per hour and we received an animated demonstration of how the cans slingshot through the machine. The brewery tour was an edifying insight into how another independent London brewery quickly outgrew its confines and made its mark as an institution proffering a seminal range of beers.

I had been drinking Camden Hells Lager since I've been in the UK, so when we saw the Camden Town Brewery, we decided to stop and get a bit to eat. It is in a great spot, right on the Camden Locks, in the heart of the Camden Market. It isn't much to look at once you walk in, pretty standard. Same goes for the cocktail offering. The cocktails on their cocktail menu mostly contained Beefeater Gin, but they were out of Beefeater Gin and said they couldn't substitute for one of the other Gins they had in the wall, which was quite a few, so that was disappointing. We were a little worried there wasn't a kids menu but we got the Cotswold fried chicken, without hot sauce and it was incredible. My wife and I shared the fish and chips and it was very good as well. We were a little underwhelmed when we walked in but were very satisfied and pleased with the food. We would comeback for the ambiance but definitely would for the food.

Frankly, I didn't know much about this brand until I sat down for lunch at an English pub in SOHO, London. I requested something on tap that was local and Anna (bartender) suggested I start with Camden Town Hells Lager. I smartly took her advice! Camden Town Brewery founded in 2010, isn't as ancient as other breweries in the UK, but what it lacks in centuries, it makes up with "Gimli" pedigree. The founder Jasper Cuppaidge is the grandson of Laurie McLaughlin, who ran McLaughlin's Brewery in Rockhampton, Australia from 1910-1960, along with an estate of 60 pubs. Story goes when Jasper was in his 20's, this in the 1990's, he missed his flight back from London to Australia. Long story short, he ended up staying in London, started from scratch, and ended up brewing his own beer. It was a hit and became the foundation of Camden Town Brewery! So Anna suggested the Camden Town Hells Lager (4.6%) to go with my English pub lunch, and from first sip to last drop, it was smooth as "Arwen's" lips! I can see why It won numerous awards, such as Champion Keg Lager at the International Brewing Awards and bronze at the European Beer Star. This is the real deal lads! I have yet to try the other brews that the Brewery pours, like the Gentleman's Wit, IHL Lager, Pale Ale, or a seasonal brew. In the end, I had a lovely lunch in London, and Camden Town Brewery made it that much lovelier! Go with the Hells Lager and I promise you a magical "Gandalf" experience! Gurth 'ni yrch!
