Well, where to begin? Normally I don't review cocktails but the bartender was truly exceptional here. An artist! He was fussy about creating the perfect blends and everything we ordered: an old fashion, a cosmo (NOT with cranberry - only raspberry made the grade) and a special dragon sour - all simply delicious. Popped in here for a dinner with friends. Big center tables with shared seating, and you get seated when your party is there (or when there's space). They take reservations but you need to be present to be seated. Drinks were a nice mix - a few good ones (Kyushiki "Old Style" Old Fashioned w/ Nori-Infused Hibiki Harmony, Ginger was fantastic), and a pink one that looked delicious, too (light summery). Drinks seem to switch up with seasons. Appetizers: - BBQ pork belly was ok, but I've had better char siu in Chinatown - black bass tarts were good, we had two orders for the three, light and the guac was a nice tight - Pac Mac dumplings were fun, but the shrimp overcooked inside - Oxtail dumplings were interesting, but lacked the flavor of what I had before downstairs; the filling was also a bit too falling apart to enjoy unless you could cram it all in one bite; you had to eat it too fast - Scallion pancake was too thick and not crispy; the sauce was good though - Soup dumplings, or xiaolongbao, were *bigger* than the average, and though not as much soup inside as I'm used to, the bigger gripe for me is giving me ginger + vinegar, and no spoons or anything to put it into the xiaolongbao Mains + Noodles: - Sauteed snow pea leaves with garlic was a hearty bowl, rare to see them give as much for an order - Grilled Strip Steak - done very well, and one of the favorite parts of the main for me - Prosperity Lobster fried rice - was a bit crazy trying to eat this, felt difficult to get a good bite of rice and the lobster was a bit difficult to get out of the shell while eating; I picked out quite a few shell bits out of my rice that would've been a pain to eat Desserts: Seasonal Fruit w/ pudding (nothing interesting there), a key lime that wasn't sour enough (too sweet), and a ginger panna cotta dish that was a wonderful one. I chose it because my original dessert choice was out of stock and it was better than the others by far. This is not a bad review of the restaurant, per se, but a bad review of the staff training. I have a severe cross-contamination shellfish allergy. When my friend made the reservation, she specifically noted my allergy. I figured that wasn't enough, so called the restaurant to ensure that I could eat there. I was assured that they usually use vegan fish sauce and vegan oyster sauce so I would be fine. When we were seated at the restaurant, I mentioned the allergy to the server. He responded that I could eat nothing at the restaurant because everything was either deep fried (in one fryer) or cooked in one of three woks so everything had cross-contamination. After all of the effort to ensure that I could eat there, my party was very disappointed. We would have been much happier had the original person told me that I couldn't eat there. Reviews are mixed probably partly because this is not exactly a takeout Chinese restaurant. When you feel comfortable going out again post-COVID, give Redfarm a try in person! Part of the experience is not a fancy-looking restaurant but fancy-looking food--there is fun presentation to the way the dumplings and other dishes are served. The drink menu is also tasty and different (something else that doesn't translate to takeout or delivery!). The Peking duck is truly delicious. This is a great dish to share with a few friends or your family. You can try the different sauces that come with it and find your favorite combination. The duck is something that we have always come back to on prior visits to Redfarm. Another favorite is the Five Flavor Chicken Dumplings. Yum! I have come here with vegetarians in my family in the past who have really enjoyed their meal. The Crunchy Vegetable and Peanut Dumplings and some of the noodle dishes were hits for them. The downside was that at least pre-COVID, you were usually in for a fairly long wait unless you come early. First time was Easter Sunday - 6 of us and 6 year old. A very attentive staff made us feel very welcome- the presentations were imaginative and OMG delicious! As a big fan of Decoy, I have to check this out. It's a nice spot for a dim sum brunch. The food here is very unique. It's Chinese dim sums with a lot of innovations. My favorite here is the Pac-Man Shrimp dumplings. Not only it looks amazing and funny, it's also delicious. The four different colors are four different flavors. Duck omelette is very good too. It's a very interesting dish. Pan fried buns are not prepared in traditional Chinese way. It's Chinese barbecue pork stuffing inside. They have French press coffee here and it's enough for several people at a reasonable price. Our waiter was amazing. He was very friendly and nice. Service here is much better than their sister restaurant Decoy downstairs, even though Decoy is much more expensive. I came here for my birthday with my sister who was visiting from Seattle. We were set on having Peking duck while she was here, and I had considered several options before settling on RedFarm/Decoy. We knew it was pricy, but read and heard that the best Peking duck was here. Not gonna lie, we were pretty nervous at first because we didn't see many Asian people and mostly saw waipipo. This is usually a red flag for me. The menu also wasn't very traditionally Chinese, so that made us nervous as well. So glad we ultimately decided to stick with it! Our server Larry was super warm and friendly. It was our first time here so he made sure we could ask any questions we had about the menu. Since we came specifically for the duck, we didn't ask about anything else on the menu. Before the duck came out, they brought out 3 different sauces and a small glass of duck soup. The duck itself was great. In my sister's words, "This shit smacks." I'm not on the millenial-Zoomer cusp like she is so I stuck with the word choice that it slaps. Skin was very crispy and the meat was juicy and tender. My sister and I only cared for the traditional hoisin sauce, but we were very happy with everything. The two of us are very small people and can't eat much, but together we ate about half of the entire duck in that one sitting plus some of a veggie dish. We literally fasted in anticipation of a Peking duck dinner because apparently our portion sizes equate to "half a person" and it definitely paid off. As a harsh critic for Chinese food, here's a place I would take out of town guests for the PEKING DUCK DINNER!! They weren't kidding as voted best in NYC for Peking duck. Every piece was divine and I loved how the pancakes to wrap were thin and served steamed in a bamboo container. Three sauces - hoisin, cranberry, and peanut - loved the traditional hoisin the best. It's $95 for one duck that serves about 4 people comfortably. The KATZ'S PASTRAMI EGG ROLL was also a WINNER. It's easily one of my favorite things in this world right now! SHRIMP STUFFED SHISHITO POPPERS were also bomb dot com. CRAB and PORK SOUP DUMPLINGS were a delight but with a hefty price tag of $4 each. We also ordered the Long Life Chanterelles + Shiitakes noodles which we barely touched after our feast and took home leftovers which proved delicious the next day. Overall, impressed with the quality and taste of the food. Ambiance was pleasant. Three of us sat at the end of the long wooden community table so it was fun seeing everyone else's food come in. Some friends and I stopped into RedFarm for a weeknight dinner. Upon arrival, they had space both upstairs and downstairs for our group. We decided to sit downstairs as the ambiance felt a little more upbeat. For drinks, I started with the Shrubarb (Scotch, Shiso, Ginger, Peach). It wasn't a favorite, so next time I'd definitely order something else from the list. For the main event, we were definitely overwhelmed by all the choices. Thankfully our waitress helped us pick options to feed our group of 5. We went with the Egg Roll, Crispy Beef, Spring Roll, Duck Lettuce Wrap, Pac Man Dumplings, Lamb Dumplings, Duck/Crab Dumpling, Shrimp/Black Truffle Shumai, Pork/Crab Soup Dumpling, BBQ Beef Fried Rice, and Yaki Soba Noodles. They also graciously made the dumplings into servings of 5 for us (since most come as 4). We were pleased with the majority of the options and the portions. It was definitely more than enough food to feed 5. Some highlights were the Crispy Beef, Duck Lettuce Wrap and BBQ Beef Fried Rice. The Lamb Dumplings and Soba Noodles were not favorites. Pacing was a little fast for my liking. The items came out very close together, so we at times were scarfing down food just to make room on the table. I would've preferred more time in-between to let the food settle. Service was great. Like I mentioned, our waitress was attentive and really spent time helping us pick options that worked for our group. They checked in on us frequently to make sure things were going well. Ambiance is great too. We enjoyed the lower level with the long, communal table, duck photos, and décor. It was bustling, but not overly loud. Usually get the sautéed string beans with spicy chopped pork and one of the fried rices. This is more than enough food for 2 adults and a child. Overall the service is good and the food is good but you definitely pay west village prices and not Chinatown prices. Obviously this is fusion and not straight Chinese food. Amazing food in a family-esque environment. -- RedFarm does two things well: food and atmosphere. The portions are adequate with most items best for group sharing. Each main goes well if split with a group. Be careful of the dumplings and appetizers, some come pre-portioned so make sure they divide evenly. The food is delicious and be sure to ask for sauce. We arrived early for our reservation and sat up at the bar while we waited for our table. Dennis the bartender was phenomenal. He was so knowledgeable about the menu and helped us navigate it so when we sat we knew exactly what to order. We were seated about 20 min later drinks in hand and ready to order. The pastrami egg roll was so interesting but very delicious. The mustard dipping sauce was great. The presentation of the dumplings is so appetizing we had the Pac-Man and the crispy duck and crab. The bbq duck lettuce wraps were so good and it was a big portion. The real star of the show for us was the grilled lobster fried rice. It was filled with so many veggies, eggs and huge pieces of lobster. You can opt to have it de-shelled or do it yourself. We chose to do it ourselves which was way more fun. Came here to meet up with family. This had to been the highlight of my weekend trip (went to Le Bernadin and Babbo too) of our foodie tour of NYC. The dumplings were fantastic. Comes out like regular dim sum container (4 to an order) with the star being the lobster dumpling. I can't recall the others we had, but I remember the lobster one very well. The fried rice dish was on point too. The pastrami egg roll was quite good too (reminds me of the corned beef eggrolls at Dogfish Head). We even got to try the Peking duck and was one of the best Peking ducks I've tasted! Not greasy or oily and their pancakes were thin and tasty too. They give you three sauces (hoisin, sesame). Easily feeds 4 people (had lots of leftovers). I know I missed couple other items we ordered; drawing a blank; maybe Justine K can fill in the rest :) The cocktails were a home run too as was the service. Two words to describe this place: Basic and overpriced I came here with a few friends last night and had the most basic yet overpriced Chinese fusion food I've EVER had. Dishes range from about $12-$48 granted a lot of things are family style dishes. We got a few of the most expensive dumplings I've ever had. 2 shrimp ones, oxtail, and lobster. All were OK but started at $14 for 4 small dumplings. For mains we got the three chili chicken ($27), shrimp and scallop xo fried rice ($27) and the waitor pressured us to get another dish thinking what we had wasn't enough, so we got jumbo shrimp with cashews and veggie sauce ($29.50). Of the dishes I think the entrees were the worst. The fried rice was definitely the worst of them all. For $27 I was expecting something super flavorful with big pieces of shrimp. But what we got was about the same quality as your neighborhood Chinese restaurant or Panda Express. They also put big chunks of red onion in the fried rice, which I thought was really weird and didn't taste right in a fried rice dish. The three chili chicken was also a major disappointment. Basically Kung Pao chicken but 3x the price. Very little chicken pieces and mostly peppers and peanuts. I think Trader Joe's Kung Pao that I often buy for like $4.99 is much better. The cashew shrimp was OK, the better of the 3 mains. But still just alright. Definitely way more veggies to shrimp And not very tasty. I also didn't like how the waitor kept trying to over sell to us. And kept telling us she thought we should order more and more for a party of 5. I guess you pay for the ambiance here. The inside is pretty cool and trendy, but that's about it. Giving 2 stars for the ambiance. I'd recommend going to Chinatown for better quality food for half the price. read more

Red Farm is pretty delicious and I don't generally like Asian Fusion. Why? Because half of the time, it's just an excuse to charge a lot of money for eh food. My favorites were the crab and pork soup dumplings, the crispy beef, the crispy stingray looking (cute or creepy however you want to think about it) duck & crab dumplings, and the Katz pastrami rolls. I personally haven't had the adorable looking Pac Man dumplings but my friend told me they were only OK. We were actually originally wanting to go check out Decoy (but there was a 3 hr wait) and as we were sitting there we saw a beautiful peking duck being served out to the table next to us. Wonderful all-round dining experience! I was planning dinner with a friend and her husband and she suggested we meet here. I got there first and was shocked at the tiny size of the place. It was six on a Tuesday but already pretty crowded (but it's small so that's not saying much). I was early so sat at the tiny bar and had a great old-fashioned. The bartender was super nice and made some food recommendations for me. I was amazed at the number of staff they had...it seemed like there were always 3-4 staff members around. It really puzzled me why there were so many staff. My friends came and we got the last booth available (the center communal table was already full). We were waited on right away and the server was helpful and informative. They ordered pork buns, lamb and curry soup and I had the spicy crispy beef and ordered a special which was shrimp-stuffed chicken. Everything was phenomenal. The crispy beef was the best I ever had....just spicy enough and crisp, but tender inside and not greasy at all. And that shrimp-stuffed chicken was absolutely bananas! The portions were huge so there was plenty to share. My friend's lamb was delicious as well. Service was so fluid and friendly and effortless, I finally understood what they were trying (successfully) to achieve with the numerous staff. It was like watching a well-rehearsed dance. I thought it was outstanding. We had dessert (ice cream for them, key lime pie for me) and it was very good. There were so many delicious sounding options on the menu that I want to go back and try more. I'll be honest, this place isn't cheap. My chicken/shrimp combo was $27 and the appetizer of crispy beef was $16 or $17 but it was worth it. I left full (and stayed full, even an hour later). KenScale: 8.0/10 I haven't been to RedFarm in a while, and have always suggested the place as a great option for brunch that showcases interesting dim sum and Asian fusion dishes. I made a last-minute decision to re-visit this place for a weekend brunch, and the food here is still going strong. Yes, the dim sums at RedFarm are probably not the most authentic ones but I'm not complaining. The signature "Pac Man" shrimp dumplings (a bit of a misnomer since each piece had different fillings like lobster and mushroom) were still as good as I had remembered, and pan-fried lamb dumplings were also flavorful without being too greasy. It's not just the dim sums that are delicious here. Three chili chicken, another signature dish of the restaurant, had a nice spicy kick to tasty texture of chicken. Again, not an ordinary Chinese chicken dish, but still a very good one, especially where complemented with addictive bacon and egg fried rice that I couldn't stop digging. The restaurant wasn't as packed as last time I visited and I was able to get seated right away, even though by no means it was empty. Everything fell flat and was extremely expensive. $15 for four-five dumplings...? Do NOT get the pac man dumplings. We tried a ton of stuff - the pacman dumplings, the special truffle dumplings (blah), the duck udon (udon is oily, but the duck is good and fatty, the wagyu bites (mediocre and flavorless). The soup dumplings and the pastrami egg rolls are great. We ended up spending ~$150 after tips and tax for two people and this is only with one non alcoholic drink. RedFarm is a modern little Chinese joint that serves up big flavor and inventive culinary creations. The dumplings are the star of the show here and although RedFarm doesn't deliver a traditional dim sum experience, they do deliver the traditional deliciousness. The chefs here really get creative with flavors and ingredient pairings, which you can find not only on their menu but also their daily specials. And their list of daily specials was impressively long and included a little bit of everything -- appetizers, dumplings, main dishes... We ended up ordering some shrimp, black truffle, and corn dumplings that were on special, as well as the crispy duck and crab dumplings. Both were delicious but the crispy duck and crab dumplings definitely took the prize. It was all kinds of goodness stuffed into a crab claw and deep fried. SO GOOD. We also ordered the long life noodles with chanterelles (yummmm) and shiitakes, as well as the mushroom and vegetable spring rolls. There wasn't a single item we didn't love and absolutely devour. Our server was great. Very personable and attentive. He gave us a great wine recommendation based on the items we ordered. We ended up getting a bottle and our server did a great job keeping our glasses full. The building itself is small but cozy. It is elbow-to-elbow seating (literally) but we didn't mind -- it created a cool community vibe. I honestly can't say a single negative thing about this place. October came to visit NYC and brought a chill that called for something to warm the belly and soul. Dumplings sounded like just the relief one needs. So we went into our go-to list of all the places we want to try. Next up: Red Farm! A small spot in the West Village with a long varied list of dumpling options and a creative but casual presentation. Walks ins only, unless you are a party of 8 or more. Mostly communal seating. Our neighbors were a small family speaking something Nordic, and a couple that seemed likely on date number two. He got a kiss goodbye after the meal, so we are routing for them. We were dragging a little from a long day and so had a tough time coming to a consensus on our order. Hoping the beers would provide a pick me up we cheered, ordered and app (shrimp stuffed shisito poppers) and studied our choices again. This place knows how to write a menu. Everything sounds good. Lobster dumplings, pork and crab soup dumplings, shrimp dumplings about 6 or 7 ways. A list of specials, main dishes, noodles, sides... we decided on the lobster, shrimp corn & chive dumpling and the "PacMan" dumplings. Our server stressed the dumplings were small and softy nudged us to order more. More decisions? Oh boy. The poppers arrived just in time to distract us. They are as advertised, hot, great shrimp, delightful sauce. Definitely worth the order! When our server returned... again... we buckled down and picked the Shrimp Curry. The "PacMan" was a kitschy plate where A sweet potato tempura "PacMan" chased four evil dumplings (Shrimp & lobster, mushroom, blue crab, and bamboo shoot). More decisions... who eats what!? Good, not great. But good. And not too small. The lobster dumplings served in martini glasses atop peppery mushrooms. Garnished with a hot pepper and olive. These had more distinct flavor combinations so we're appreciative. Not too small either with the mushrooms. The shrimp corn and chive dumplings were small. And pan fried which was a change, and appreciated. We were about 70% satiated after that. One of those... sure we could eat more... but do we have to? Enter Shrimp Curry. Good flavor. The coconut breaks through, shrimp cooked right, the tofu and broccoli held the most flavor. And it was fun to go swimming for the different vegetables. Our server also up-sold us rice for 3.50 and who doesn't eat rice with curry? (Meaning: the rice should just come with the meal when it's $31) Come on Red Farm. Anybody giving this place less than five stars is PLAYING THEMSELVES big time. Don't listen to them. The HATERS. This place is never not on point. Everything is FIRE. This is significantly higher quality than the actual hot garbage they serve in places like Mr. chows. 3 words - SPICY CRISPY BEEF. Also pac man dumplings are a red farm classic. All of their dumplings look cute and taste great, their cocktail menu is solid too. Bring your wifey here, she will have a good time. Every single dish here is SO pretty! And more importantly, they taste good too! However, everything is a bit overpriced.
