I can't even begin to express what a tremendous gift it has been to feel secure that we can handle any health issues that come up for Jojo, with the support of Dr. Rettig and her team. We animal guardians love our little ones so much, and there's nothing worse than watching them suffer and not knowing how to help. Whenever I can surrender enough to completely hand over the assessment and decision making to Dr. Rettig, we always get a good outcome. On more than one occasion, we have seen resolution of an acute issue within 24 hours of our treatment session. It's been truly remarkable. Dr. Bane's exam (March 2021) was comprehensive and well-beyond helpful. She noted that he had an undescended testicle (totally missed by the staff at a local corporately owned vet hospital, and by me), and spent lots of time offering much needed guidance about his diet -- including offering me a basic recipe that greatly improved upon his home-cooked meals and analyzing what vitamins and minerals should be added to make them optimal. Since I also feed him Carna4 kibble, she went over those ingredients thoroughly as well. As is common with doodles, my pup has a somewhat sensitive gut and itchy skin. When Animal Biome sent a detailed report on his microbiome, Dr. Bane spent half an hour of her own time (no charge to me) consulting with their microbiologist, and then spent lots of time (at a very reasonable cost) going over their report with me and making recommendations. She's been wonderfully accessible and thoughtful whenever I've needed guidance -- most recently about a minimally invasive approach to his cryptorchid neutering and gastropexy, and in a short time I've come to trust her completely. We waited about five minutes and then the office staff person said "Oh, you haven't been checked in yet?". I said "not yet", then they made us wait again and were then told they couldn't see us today, and that they would need another $70 deposit to make a future appointment, after which I walked out of their office. It's not that they were rude. It's just that I feel like they were trying to make an example out of me, and for them to just keep the $70 deposit feels wrong. I've definitely had appointments there where I've come in and had to wait 15 to 20 minutes before being seen, so I don't understand why they were so strict with me today, but I wouldn't recommend going there after that incident. I am very disappointed in the office staff and the doctor who refused us after being told to still come in! Not cool.

He listened to my dog's history, understood my thinking, told me it made sense, and told me he understood the pathway I wanted to take. For once, I wasn't automatically crazy or a "helicopter" pup parent. He really gets it. Dr. Richter had a very reasonable grasp on my dog's history and the reasons for his issues. I am so looking forward to continuing treatment with him in the coming months, focusing on the gut and on my dog's past mold exposure. I can't say enough about what it means to be truly heard and understood by a vet, and have them speak to you on a well-informed level. Our boy developed idiopathic epilepsy prior to turning four which necessitated Dr. Mills to refer us to the neurologist Dr. Erik Johnson, co-founder of NeuroVet in Pleasant Hill, CA. We continued with Dr. Mills for all things unrelated to neurology and she remained interested in his seizure progress. Prior to moving to a new state, we had a battery of tests and vaccines to ensure that we had the best possible care before having to search for a new veterinarian in our area. Dr. Chalmers did her usual arcane muscle testing before providing multiple detoxifying and supportive supplements plus two homeopathic remedies, which have considerably reduced the frequency and intensity of seizures and reanimated her energy. Dr. Chalmers appears more comfortable communicating with the pet than with its person; she makes a visible strong connection with the pet that for our dog and us has been very beneficial. I lost my first dog on the operating table when I was much younger. Back then, I was young ,trusting, and I believed that any licensed vet could do the job. That experience was deeply traumatic. for Gabby, I looked into almost every clinic that performs this kind of surgery in the bay area--read every review on Google and Yelp, sometimes multiple times. It came down to three options. The first one was close to where I live. We went to check it out. It felt more like an emergency room--very professional, but also very clinical. The doctors reviewed Gabby's case like it was a project. Not necessarily bad, just not very personal, at all. The second one was more budget-friendly, but had mixed reviews. The doctor said there'd be no pre-check or consultation--just bring Gabby in on the day of surgery. That didn't sit right with me. Then there was Dr. Sam's clinic. It's not the closest, and while not the cheapest, the price seemed reasonable--and now I could see why. When we went in for the first visit, Dr. Sam sat across from me. Gabby was lying next to me at first, then got up, walked over to him, and laid down by his side. I almost cried--it felt like Gabby made the choice for us. The consultation was very thorough. They even followed up on an old heart murmur diagnosis just to be safe. We tested her pee twice because fitst time the sample was small (i didn't manage to get much of her pee). Everything was explained clearly. The clinic was clean, everyone was kind, and organized, and the energy there just felt good. It felt like they really care. After surgery, I had questions, and they responded quickly every time. Today, we went in for the two-week checkup, and Gabby is doing great. They've been so cautious, so caring, and clearly experienced. I honestly feel lucky that Dr. Sam was the one to operate on Gabby. I'd recommend him and his team to anyone. You can probably pay for a hotel and have a vacation in a place like Carson City or South Lake Tahoe and still have money left over after paying for your dogs surgery..
