Fun! Note that this experience is separate from, but within, the free park, known as Whakarewarewa Forest, which has a separate Yelp page. The paid activities here involve networks of rope bridges at multiple levels. The lower section is for pleasant strolling about ten meters above the ground. It is suitable for anyone who can walk, and is a cool way to enjoy the out-of-place beauty of a redwood forest in New Zealand. They offer a nighttime version with some illuminated art to make it worth your while to experience it without the benefit of sunlight. The problem is that it is really, really popular! I had a fast-pass as part of a bigger package, and i wouldn't have wanted to wait on the long line. Having such crowds affects the experience, especially considering you are responsible to limit the number of people on a bridge at any given time, but you can't tell how many are there because it's too dark! The more interesting offering is the higher-up trek, known appropriately as Redwoods Altitude. You have to get harnessed up and led through by experienced guides. It's 30+ meters high. There are increasingly wobbly bridges, a few SUPER fun ziplines, and an optional step-off-the-edge bungee finale. It's not for people with heights issues, but I really enjoyed it. Our guides were Elena and Chloe, and we loved them and felt very safe with them. I would do this again. read more

We had a wonderful experience at the Tree Walk! We loved being up in the redwoods to truly appreciate the trees and forest from a new perspective. The educational materials along the track are fantastic! So many people don't appreciate forestry as a necessary industry that is vital to a healthy environment. We heard lots of comments about "invasive" radiata pines while touring the South Island. It was wonderful to learn about the forest and about the work SCION is doing to ensure forests and forestry are sustainable. In addition to experiencing the Tree Walk, we also enjoyed brunch at the Eastwood Cafe and a walk through the forest on one of several well-kept tracks. Thanks for making our visit to New Zealand even more magical!! read more

Growing up in California, redwood trees in the sequoia genus have a special place in my heart. When I learned that not only was there a 120 year old (planted) redwood forest, but that someone had built a series of more than two dozen suspended bridges through the forest?! I'm so in! We arrived shortly after they opened at 9am and we mostly had the walkway to ourselves, which is the only way I would prefer. Soon, up the spiral walkway and we were among the trees. What I love most about redwood forests is the aroma and the stillness. In the early opening hour here, both are present. The walk is easy, fun, and peaceful. It isn't at all scary, I don't think. My child isn't big on heights, but was not at all scared. On many of the platforms in-between bridges, signs help to educate you about this forest, its origin, the trees themselves, and conservation all in the perfect amount of detail to educate without creating bottlenecks. There are also so benches to rest, though I found the activity was not at all physically demanding and I'm far from fittest on Earth. The walk only takes about 30-40 minutes if you take your time and enjoy it. If you're in a rush (hopefully not) and don't have to wait for others, it can probably be done in 5-10 minutes. As an alternative to those averse to heights, you can also walk the forest floor for free, which seemed a popular activity for locals. They offer the walks at nighttime, too, which I think would be really neat. For me, this attraction helped me appreciate Rotorua more. I don't like Rotorua much -- vibes of an unattractive tourist trap in town -- but this is worth visiting again. read more

Reading the reviews and comments, we decided to go to the night tree walk to see the lights. We got tickets when we were there as we didn't know when we were going to arrive. There was no line up and in fact we were the only group walking the tree walk for most of it so we took our time. Overall it was 2 stars as there were not that many lights in the trees and there was not that much to see especially given the $40 NZ price, it was not really worth the price. We expected to see more and different lights throughout the trees. The good thing was that there was not that many people and we could take our time to get our moneys worth. It would be a different experience going during the day but there may be crowds and line ups. Not sure it is something that would recommend given the price. read more

Beautiful outdoor activity to do with the family! The bridges are really fun to walk across (make sure it's just you on there if you don't want it to be rocking with everyone else walking on it too!) and the sights are just beauuuuutiful. If you are not good with heights, maybe skip this activity. After you are done going thru all the bridges, you can take a walk thru the Redwood forests! Very nice and the trails are easy and quiet. If you dont want to spend money on the treewalk, you can just go this route and do your own "tree walk". Definitely something to check out as a family! read more

We thought this was fun. For any Star Wars fans think Ewoks Village-with a bunch of pathways through the redwood trees - and you will get the general idea about this new attraction (2-years old) set in the Redwood forest. So what this is is an elevated walkway 20-30 feet in the air that takes you on an interesting tree to tree walk between towering redwood trees that are more than 100 years old. This is a ticketed attraction (around NZ$25 per person if I remember correctly) and after you climb up a couple of flights of stairs, you begin your journey "anti-clockwise" as we were told. You walk from platform to platform on safe narrow wooden pathways that are suspended on reinforced steel cables like suspension bridges. They do flex a bit as you move along but it feels very safe. I'm not a big fan of heights but was just fine on this. At each platform there are intriguing placards about the forest, the walkway and forestry in New Zealand. You can continue at your own pace-we spent a bit over 35 minutes in the trees. They also have a night walk with cool light sculptures which we also would have liked to do. Other than the stairs at the beginning and one spot in the middle with stairs up to an even higher platform, the terrain is easily walked by most anybody. I enjoyed it and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others. Very unique perspective being up in the trees. read more

Expensive ($20 US per person), but worth it! We had a wait, but I'm glad the regulate how many people are allowed up in the tree walk at any given time. It was busy up top, but not insane pushing-and-shoving busy. The view at night is like fairy lights; easy to imagine this as the setting for every elf story I have ever read. BF liked the engineering aspects; it is cool how the tree walk has been hung without damage or drilling into the trees. Would definitely recommend this as an unusual way to spend an evening. read more

We did the daytime walk. it was fun and different. For the length of it it wasn't really worth the price though. Costs about $45 USD for 2 people and took us about 20 minutes to walk the whole thing And we were taking our sweet time. We went first thing in the morning and that was nice cause we were one of 4 people up there. Later in the day it was pretty crowded. Honestly we had more fun just hiking in the forest and that's free. If you want to have an interesting new experience you may want to do this. But if I had it to do over I'd just hike and save the money. read more

The elevated walkway takes you through a beautiful redwood forest. At each tree there is a platform that allows you to stop and enjoy the view, and learn more about the trees and their role in New Zealand (informational displays). This place is just ok. We did the night time tree top walk. It was pretty dark and the illumination from the lamps didn't highlight the magestic redwoods as much as I had hoped. I would have preferred to come during the daytime to walk the redwood forest on our own. Night time illumination of the bridges is also low and difficult to tell if you are at the max 8 people per bridge limit. Not for anyone squeamish about heights. Narrow bridges sway and bounce (as would be expected). read more

Nausea inducing swinging walkways! There really ought to be warnings for people who get motion sickness not to participate. My friend really wanted to do this in the lights at night so we went without any issue on an uncrowded weeknight. Needless to say I walked through as swiftly as possible. There are signs posted that say there should be a maximum of 8 people on any given bridge but there were no staff present once we were up in the trees to ensure safe practices and rule-following. I would be carefully gliding along trying to cause as little movement on the bridges as possible when out of nowhere a high stepper would leap onto the walkway I was on and send me lurching. Not fun. I wouldn't pay to do any tree walk ever again due to this experience. The lights in the trees were neat but it was nothing like the long exposure photos some have posted. They make it look like the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore online and it is nothing like it in any way. In my opinion this is another gimmicky roadside attraction in Rotorua. Call me spoiled, but being from CA and WA there isn't anything here you can't see back home. read more

We completely missed this last time we were in Rotorua, but it was pretty high priority on this trip. I had my not-quite-two-year-old with me on this trip. I was really not too sure if he'd be able to handle it, because the entrance rules state that anyone who goes up must walk the entire way, they cannot be carried (risk of falling, obv). He probably could have made it about a third of the way around, but the swinging suspension bridge may have been too great a challenge for our little walker, and I'm sure he'd have wanted to be picked up at some point - but he fell asleep in the car on the way, so Mr. Jennifer S. stayed back and took a nap, too, while I did the treewalk on my own. Most of the suspended portions were narrow, so it would have been awkward trying to lead him around. I wanted to ask whether he would have been allowed in a baby carrier, but the staff were fielding questions from others, so I didn't hang around to inquire. Purchase your ticket at the i-site desk, then present it to the staff at the base of the Treewalk stairs. Normally $25 (kind of steep, but you can take as long as you like), but was $20 the day I went. It's a long loop, on suspension bridges suspended from tree to tree with platforms hugging the tree trunks. A pair of visitors ahead of me and I were interested in the construction and engineering of the whole thing. You can go any pace you like - there are certain numbers allowed on the bridge portions at any time, and they discourage going other than anti-clockwise. I didn't time myself, but I think you could take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. I went at a leisurely pace and took a lot of photos. Platforms around the tree trunks offer places to rest - some with benches, some with plaques to read. I'd have preferred more stuff to read, really, but I did learn a little about the redwoods and pines and forestry of the North Island. There are some long and some short suspension sections. All portions are enclosed up to about bicep level for most adults, and even though it swings a little, it all felt very safe and secure. It's not exactly a "canopy" walk - there's still a lot of tree above your head - but it was a really neat way to explore the forest from a different perspective than a typical hiking trail. I would totally do it again, especially once my son gets older. There are free trails accessible from the parking area and you can explore the adjacent redwood forest. Clean bathrooms that look like art installations. Trailer with coffee and snacks. read more

My mother and I were able to do this Treewalk on the perfect afternoon at the beginning of December. We were very lucky when we arrived because it was not too busy, so we were able to go as fast or slow as we wanted through the Treewalk. It was absolutely incredible to be high up in the trees! I get pretty nervous around heights but I felt very safe, and even did the optional higher walk with the see-through grates! After we finished the Treewalk we were able to walk one of the trails through the Redwoods grounds as well. I would highly recommend giving yourself enough time to do this too! It was beautiful and serene. In addition to the beautiful Redwoods and the cool Treewalk, all of the staff were very friendly as well. They weren't there just to take your money and get you along your way, they were friendly faces to chat and answer any questions about New Zealand (shoutout to Ken!) All in all, definitely worth the price we paid. Also I definitely recommend doing it in the daylight if you get the chance. Next time I'm in the area I want to check it out at night too! read more

Day 4 of our NZ trip. We did night walk with beautiful lanterns illuminating between trees. I love everything about this park we did 7 miles hiking during the day and went to have dinner then came back for the night tree walk. It was weeknight therefore not that many people on the treetop. Absolutely gorgeous park. I wish I have something like it closer. read more

Might be better to visit during the day so you can see how high up you are. But at night was still kind of scary, the bridges feel loose but are very safe. There are long bridges and short bridges, in total there are 20 bridges to cross. read more

The novelty of walking through the trees on suspension bridges is enticing. However it was a bit underwhelming. I'm not sure what I was expecting, i knew it wasn't ziplines or obstacles, so if you're looking for that- don't do this. But if you are looking for a relaxing walk amongst the redwoods in a well shaded area and want to learn about the history etc this is the walk for you. If you prefer to walk through the trees on the ground, well that's free ( you only pay if you want to be up in the air). The walk takes about 45 minutes if you leisurely walk it, much less if you don't read anything or don't take pictures. This activity is good contingent upon what you're looking for. I personally think it would be good for children and those that don't want to do extensive walking but want to enjoy nature. But keep in mind you have to have good balance and the ability to climb up and down stairs to do this activity. Oh they do have a night walk where the huge lanterns that were created by an artist are lit up at night hanging in the trees which I can see worth doing. read more

This was a fun thing to do in the evening! Great for kids or adults of all ages. You walk amongst the platforms hung in the giant redwood trees and they have lanterns all over it is gorgeous!! There are these swinging bridges between each platform so it's great for that young at heart. Only takes about 45 minutes and you see plenty of trees for about $25. It was recommended to me and I'm so glad it was, if you have the time try it! They don't have Wifi at the main office. No reservations, no wait time, just show up after 6 PM and enjoy! read more

This was not something I would recommend. The platforms have signs that state no more than 8 people for safety, but there were so many people on the walks and the platforms I couldn't count them. It felt very dangerous. We did complain to the workers, but were told we picked a bad time to come. I would say any time is a bad time to go there. Save your money. read more

It's ok but once you've walked over the first bridge you've kind of done it! The information boards are quite interesting and my kids enjoyed learning about the trees but even they got bored in the end, we made our own game of measuring the diameter of the trees by linking arms around it. I think that $60 for the 4 of us was too expensive though and it needs something extra. I think it's a nice idea in theory but the reality is its not that exciting. I certainly wouldn't go again or even recommend as there is a lot more to do in the area. The staff were very nice and the construction of the bridges are excellent but still only 2 stars sorry! read more
