They have no host at the front desk, which would be fine if every single barber in there didn't have an attitude as big as their gut. Before I even sat down for a haircut I was already given attitude by some douche working there who acted incredibly annoyed when he asked me if I had an appointment. I told him I did, and who I was there to see, and during that whole process he seemed annoyed that I was even there. This was the first red flag. The second red flag is after telling my barber that I wanted a low/mid skin fade (probably one of the most common haircuts for men in their 20-30's to get) he told me he "only does high fades" okay bozo - then why do you let people book different styles of haircuts through the app, which include all different types of fades? The haircut came out like absolute shit, which is no surprise given that my barber was ripping a cannabis vape for the entire duration of my haircut, during said haircut he spent the entire time talking about his history of drug use and all of his "past" issues with the law.....wtf? He almost seemed proud to be a complete loser. On top of ALL of this nonsense, this place charges more for a haircut than half of the "high end" barbershops in downtown Boston. Absolute joke. Anyone dumb enough to return here a second time almost deserves to be ripped off. This place is absolute garbage and I hope they go out of business soon.

As others have said, finding the shop is not an obvious affair, but when I called to make an appointment, Lyn told me to enter the main lobby at 160 Federal and turn right. The shop entrance is a gold door that looks like it would be an employee-only area, stenciled smartly with black lettering: Fort Hill Barber Shop. Down a short hallway is the shop. The decor is pleasant -- sports memorabilia, family pictures, elixir advertisements and a T.V. Lyn's work station is very orderly and clean. She was the only barber present, and I'm pretty sure that's normal. She asked me how I like to have my hair cut and I told her a #4 clipper blade to taper the back and sides, scissor cut on top and a nice blend between the top and sides. Lyn said, "That's what I call a businessman's cut. Most men don't know the blade number, so I ask if they want a businessman's cut, then I use a #4." Lyn did exactly what I wanted. She even asked if I wanted the top thinned (as I have thick hair), so I told her to use her best judgement. She thinned it, and it looks great. She finished with a lather and shave on my neck and behind my ears, and then a splash of aftershave. Another reviewer said Lyn shaved his sideburns off twice, so I was pretty conscious to not let that happen. I needn't have worried, as she asked if I wanted them shortened, confirmed the length, and did what I asked. Lyn is gregarious and talked throughout my haircut. Overall a nice experience, and I'll be back if I'm in Boston next time I'm due for a haircut. $20 cash, $2 tip.

It's in the same building as First Republic Bank, but it's hidden down a weird white hallway. I told her exactly how I like my hair cut and she started out okay. I like a scissor cut on top and close fade on the sides. Pretty standard. She finishes the sides and grabs a big trimmer. She starts going around my crown and I stop her immediately. She explains that she's only blending the sides and that she would never think of using a trimmer on the top of my head. I very reluctantly allow her to continue. Then without warning she buzzes the top of my head! It wasn't a close buzz but I explicitly told her what I wanted. She starts talking about how you never get an even cut with scissors and how I won't be able to tell the difference. It's too late to stop her at this point. She has to finish the cut or I'll look like I went through a wood chipper. She finishes and takes out a straight razor to do my line up and my neck. I don't know what she did back there but I probably could have done a better job blindfolded.

I live on the South Shore, but I drive up to Somerville just to see CJ! CJ is perceptive to both the client's desires and also what will look good for each person. He clearly communicates what he plans to do, and he will pause to confirm your approval before continuing if it's a new look for you. This is THE most important quality in a barber, because I might have an idea for my haircut/beard trim in my mind, but the barber may see it differently. And now, since I completely trust CJ's judgement, I could walk in and say "Do whatever you want" and I wouldn't worry at all. It was CJ's judgement that led to my current beard style, and looking back it was obviously the right choice. If you need a new barber and don't know where to go, book CJ at either of The Shop locations. I've been going to CJ for years, so the move to The Shop was a no-brainer. Now I have a kid, and CJ cuts his hair, too - super convenient to get both done with one trip. My kid already had a few haircuts done before going to CJ, and CJ is amazing with kids. All the barbers in the place are respectful when we're there - they even sometimes change the music playlist to be kid-friendly, which is an awareness I really appreciate as a parent. The place is clean and welcoming, and the staff are efficient. Street parking is easy enough for the amount of time a haircut would take. I highly recommend CJ and 968 The Shop!
