I wanted a room that was (1) a good value (2) in a safe neighborhood, because I knew I'd be out wandering and shopping and eating alone until late every night. I also didn't want to spend a lot of money on an ocean view because, in my husband's absence, I knew I wouldn't spend much time in the room with my eyes open. This place fit the bill perfectly. It's located on a little square just off the shore in a line with several other small multi-level inn type establishments. My room was a downstairs room, which felt particularly safe to me despite having a door to the outside (albeit a locked courtyard) right outside my room. My room key happened to fit the outside door, so I was able to make sure it was locked each night before bed. Hallway lights are on timers, which could last a little longer than they do per activation, but which sufficiently allow you to illuminate the way to your room when you come in after dark nonetheless. After around 8 at night, the hotel is unmanned, and entry from the street is by key only - those little timer lights become very important when you're one of only a few guests (or the only guest!) and you're coming in to a pitch black space unaccompanied! I felt completely safe there. In fact, I walked the entire area of Brighton & came in well after dark every night, and at no time did I feel the least bit worried about my safety. The room itself was clean and cozy, and one of the very few places in Brighton where I didn't have to crank the radiator to warm the room at night - it was perfectly toasty by default and perfectly comfortable! Bathroom was clean, water pressure was good & water temp was consistent and responsive to adjustment. The manager on duty was super nice, helpful & very friendly, and met my very few requests promptly and with a smile. He always seemed interested in whether my stay was going as planned and whether they were providing all I needed there - just very accommodating. The most outstanding thing about the room was this: a small fridge, in which they provide bottled water, beer, wine, snacks, cokes, and even milk for making your tea or coffee using the electric kettle they provide. They also provide teabags, instant coffee, and brown and white sugars. It really makes life so easy when you don't have to consider procuring these basic items every time the need for one arises, and further that you're not at risk of paying three prices for them if you actually consume them (unlike in the US, where a fridge full of goodies is a trap for the unwary hungry or thirsty traveler!). Kudos to Churchill Brighton for getting this small detail right, I view it as definite reason this place gets 4 stars from me rather than 3 (it is a very basic hotel, after all) and a good reason to pick Churchill Brighton over the many others in its class!

You also get as much toast, tea, coffe and juice as you want, and for £5 it's a bargain. Problems though, my tv didn't work, neither did my heating. They fixed the heating though and my friends' tvs worked, but this didn't really bother me as I didn't got there to watch big brother! The staff were absolutely lovely as well. They ordered our taxis and looked after our luggage on our last day. We asked for an ironboard and iron which came to our door in less than a minute, our heating was fixed just as fast too. Free internet access as well so you can update to your facebook status to I Love Cecil.

The hotel is in need of updating, and the rooms are basic, don't expect any frills or a romantic setting. If you get a sea view that will make up for the fairly shabby interior! However, the breakfast is great, including Vegetarian and Vegan options, and the staff are friendly and helpful. A good budget option for visiting this vibrant city!

It's not huge (maybe 12 tables?), but the bright, airy decoration makes it seem open and not at all crowded. Looking at the menu, I didn't fancy any of the starters so we both dived straight into the mains. I had sirloin of sussex beef with garlic mushrooms, dauphinoise potatoes and a wine & rosemary sauce (and a side of green beans). It was delicious. I have to say my steak was maybe a little overcooked for me (I like medium rare), but it was so tasty that I didn't complain. Rare for me when it comes to meat. My friend had fried breaded halloumi with sesame seeds, celeriac and truffle purée, baby spinach, garlic wild mushrooms and red pepper & lentil sauce. Goodness me! It was *delicious*, and the chef even made her up a side of dauphinoise potatoes because she loves them so much. Prior to that we devoured a decent-sized home-made roll as well. Plus, we had the house red, which was a weighty merlot totally under-priced for how nice it was at £19 a bottle. Finished off with an espresso each, and we shared the amaretto & amaretti biscuit parfait with griottine cherries plus almond tuille. Best bit of the meal for me. It honestly makes my mouth water just thinking about how good it was. Somehow, we only ended up paying £32 a head for that. Incredible value, especially as it included 12.5% service! Michelle and I have spent more on basic takeaways than that, and this was divine! We finished our wine in the bar, which is small but perfectly formed with some super-knowledgeable barmen with smiles all round. Two shots for £6 later, and a super recommendation for 'the second best bar in town' - and we were on our way. I have stayed here previously, and the experience was just the same. Well, I'm no Martini expert, but their straight up, made with plymouth gin (or wyborowa vodka, your choice), certainly got me going for the evening, it was delicious - and strong. My personal new favourite though is the Polish Spring Punch: Wyborowa, Chambord, Raspberry purée, fresh lime, Gomme and Champagne. Beautifully presented and although a little more expensive than even a London bar at £8.50, it's worth it just to be there.

My recent three night stay at The Avalon was just perfect for that. The location is great - less than 5 minutes walk to the beach in Kemp Town, right near lots of shops and restaurants and within a short walk to the centre of Brighton. Walking from the train station took less than half an hour, and my favourite coffee shop ever, Redroaster (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/123197-Redroaster-Coffee-House-Brighton) , is moments away. Mmmm, hot chocolate! Owners Brian and Tom made us all feel very welcome, especially Benji the dog who had a fuss made of him every morning in the breakfast room. Speaking of which, the hearty breakfasts set us up very nicely for days of wandering around town, and help was on hand to tell us about good countryside walks for Benji complete with maps and bus times. It was lovely to be so well looked after, it's just a shame we didn't have time to go everywhere we wanted. Having a really nice room to hang out in meant we didn't feel like we needed to be out and about all the time, and I can highly recommend the four poster room with its super comfy bed and sofa, perfect for reclining on and watching a movie (a DVD library in the breakfast room helped with this also). Free wifi was the icing on a very nice cake, and I'm sure we'll be going back to the Avalon very soon.

Only a 2 minute walk from the beach and a short bus ride to the town centre and marina it is in a great location. The rooms are ok value for a 4 star so if your looking for cheap and cheerful look elsewhere. However, single rooms around £50 and doubles around £75 a night if you are coming down for a romantic get away or business then it's pretty good. latest check-in is 21:00 whilst check-out is at 11 oclock in the morning but luggage can be looked after for the remainder of the day.

Room 7 is stunning, spacious and with a 'modern' 4-poster, just lacking a bath really. Breakfast is included and consists of a great buffet of fruit salad, cereals, yoghurt etc, followed by your choice of full english cooked to order, or bagels with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. The proprietor, Terry, goes out of his way to make you feel welcome and is full of helpful tips on the local area. Mine is: check out the Hand in Hand pub just round the corner - brilliant local, Brighton's smallest pub with on-site micro Brewery, heaven! Highly recommended.

I rushed off to Brighton and hid in a hotel room for a couple of days. It didn't work, but I did have a great time and had a really relaxing trip. The B&B is actually just bed - although the guys that own this place do have another guest house just around the corner that does breakfast too. I wouldn't worry too much about this though - there's so many places on the high street near by that you won't go hungry! The guest house is lovely. It was perfect for what I needed and while I found the single bedroom very small, I was on a budget. If I was spending more than a few days there it might have been an issue. It was about £28 a night think - not sure if that goes up in the summer, but it seems pretty reasonable to me. Perfect location in a leafy avenue, nice owners and great for a quick break away at the last minute. Even if it doesn't help to get rid of writers block.

We paid around £66 a night for an en suite double room including breakfast, which is a real bargain for Brighton, which seems to be getting more and more pricey. The guesthouse was immaculately clean and we were made to feel welcome as soon as we arrived and we were given a map of the Brighton area which was very helpful. It's around a 20-30 min walk from Brighton station, 5 mins from the sea/pier and around 15 mins from the Lanes, which isn't too bad. I would have given 4 stars but our room really was tiny and our bed was more like a small double - not so great when you have two tall people trying to sleep in it! There is a good choice at breakfast (I had the full English which was lovely) but we only managed to sample it once because it's only served until 9:15. Check out on Sunday is 10am, so be prepared! Overall, it's a value for money B&B, which is very well run and friendly. I'm not sure I'd stay again just because of the early breakfast and check out time but if you are in Brighton on a budget it's worth checking out.

The owners Eammon and Mark really know how to make you feel welcome here, we were very pleasantly surprised. I love how all the rooms are named after a classic Hollywood star too, we came on a quiet week and got a free upgrade to the Clark Gable room complete with portrait, four poster bed, great shower and milk in the fridge to make your own tea. You may hear the seagulls in the morning but this didn't bother us too much, it was like our wake-up call!

Our friends from Australia had a four-poster bed in their room but no balcony. Lovely English breakfast with cereal to start if wanted. I enjoyed my stay here.
