Really surprised no one has reviewed Dr. Rehder's office yet! (This review is for the 580 S. Aiken Ave. Pittsburgh, PA 15232 address btw. Not sure why Yelp has it listed as Liberty Ave. But this was the only entry for Karen Rehder MD....) I really like coming here because it's usually not very crowded. (Granted I come in the morning, so maybe that's the secret?) I usually visit her office during Thanksgiving break since I live in St. Louis and I only come to Pittsburgh to visit family for the holidays....it's apparently a great time for a pap smear, lol. Not too crowded. They have a parking garage in the back but I almost never use it because it's a tight fit. They will validate your parking though, so I *think* it's free, last I checked. I usually just park on Ellsworth, however, and walk 1 block to Aiken. It's not far of a hike at all....usually followed by shopping on Walnut street. :) The building itself is quite nice as well. Very much "green" in the architecture. Lots of glass used in both ceilings and walls to allow for maximum natural light in the daytime so electric bulbs aren't necessary. The people are great in this office. Everyone is very polite & friendly. The paperwork is usually minimal, even if you're a repeat customer, you have to update your insurance every so often which is pretty standard procedure. My nurses have all been wonderful--they love to make conversation whilst getting you weighed/doing blood pressure, etc. I've been going to this clinic for about 3-4 years now and I just last week had the pleasure of having Dr. Rehder perform my routine checkup on me. Usually I have a different doctor because Rehder is in high demand apparently, lol. I can see why. She's a really sweet woman who genuinely cares about the well-being of her patients. I had no problems asking her what some might call "embarrassing" questions (lol) and she did a great job of making sure all of my questions were answered. Also noteworthy: Dr. Rehder got her medical degree from Saint Louis University where I attend school, which I thought was quite fascinating seeing as I grew up in Pittsburgh and she grew up in North Dakota but we still ended up at the same school...pretty nifty. (Ask how many east coasters if they know about SLU...not many do...!) SLU has a great med program and I really love that Dr. Rehder's office really embraces the "Jesuit Mission" of being women & men for others! Overall, a 5-star experience every time. I cannot recommend her office enough. I only wish that I could find a doctor as good as her out here in St. Louis! read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Karen Rehder's for several years. In fact, have referred her practice to friends/family. Dr. Rehder and her Staff are kind, caring and very supportive. She spends an exceptional amount of time per visit going over my needs and actually listening to me. There are few doctor's that do this now a days. I have gone to Dr. Rehder for over 20 years. I have never had any issues that are mentioned in some of the other reviews. I have seen her PA's, NP's and her over these years and have always been grateful for the care of me as a whole person! She spends enough time with you and looks at your entire history including family history as she makes recommendations. She did my hysterectomy and her surgical skills provided me with a seamless recovery. I will be hard-pressed to find another doctor like her whenever she decides to retire! read more

Dr. Rehder is the best gynecologist in the city of Pittsburgh. I just love this practice! Maybe you're doing this now... shopping for a gynecologist? Years ago, I would switch to another gynecologist just about every two years. They either didn't listen, had no patience, could not solve my problems, too many long wait times (some physicians had me waiting while they attended to problem pregnancies or deliveries), and the sometimes disrespectful office staff. Not the case with Dr. Rehder's practice! I've been seeing Dr. Rehder for more then ten years. I was having major problems with fibroid cysts (very heavy bleeding, always anemic), periods that would last two weeks each month, and associated migraine headaches. I'm happy to say that she's cured me of all of these problems! Dr. Rehder is very attentive, so kind and caring, she takes all the time I need to answer my questions. The office staff is just super, the waiting room is very comfortable (good coffee!), and I was always seen on time. My elderly mother also began seeing Dr. Rehder and just adores her. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND DR. REHDER FOR THE MORE MATURE LADIES. Dr. Rehder is about my age and so is also able to relate to issues we have as we get older. I'm so happy I found Dr. Rehder and pray she doesn't retire any time soon! read more

I would not recommend Dr. Rehder and/or her associates for any adolescent care as they have no clue regarding the guidelines for adolescent gynecology. Furthermore, Dr. Rehder has minimal patient-doctor understanding when it comes sharing her professional opinions and talking to her patients and her care givers. She does not explain the circumstances well when more explanation needed, she has zero patience and tolerance. The last doctor I would choose for patients who are 19 and up. I would choose to go to the Young Adult Clinic at UPMC if you want to receive a very good health care for an adolescent. read more

My wife has been to many GYN and would go nowhere else. This doctor is exceptional.

I am so unbelievably frustrated with this doctor's office. Firstly, there are LOADS of religious texts in the waiting room. I have no problem with religious freedom, but I find it inappropriate to display in a doctor's office where people of different religions may come to make controversial decisions (contraception, STD testing and treatment). I should have walked out immediately. My appointment went okay, but about a week afterward, I received a letter saying I had an infection, with a prescription enclosed. The letter had no information about the infection, said nothing about symptoms or whether or not my boyfriend needs to be tested as well. I am outraged that a doctor's office would consider it appropriate to give patients information about their health in such an impersonal manner, with no information either. Would it have been that time-consuming to call me? I will never be returning to this practice and will be telling every woman I know to avoid it. read more

I didn't see the doctor. But due to my mom's health issues and we are faced with some very difficult choice I found an article written by Dr. Rehder on internet, and it answers my doubts and helps me to look at the matter more clearly. From the article, it is clear that Dr. Rehder is a compassionate doctor with a heart for her patients. Trust me, during the course of my mom's illness, I came to realize that what makes a doctor excellent is the "heart", without this, a very knowledgeable and skill doctor with top qualifications may actually be a "killer", instead of a "saver." read more

I thought that my appointment was on a Wednesday, and got there to find out that it was the following Wednesday, which was annoying because I had rearranged my schedule to be there. Not sure if I just wrote down the wrong date or the receptionist was not clear. Anyway, the reason I canceled my follow-up appointment is because a) they couldn't fit me in for another week and b) there are a bunch of religious pamphlets in the waiting room and I don't think that's professional or appropriate for any doctor's office, let alone a gynecologist. I checked with the front desk and they confirmed that this is Dr. Rehder's choice. If she feels strongly enough about her religious views to put this material in her waiting room - something I have never come across in a doctor's office ever - then I can imagine that these views would filter into her conversations with patients about contraception, sexual practices, and perhaps even abortion. I was very uncomfortable with having those materials there, but at least I knew her ideological position and could make the decision to go elsewhere? It's unfortunate because her office is right by my apartment and the office itself is beautiful, but I don't want to go somewhere where I'm in fundamental disagreement with the doctor. I have mixed feelings about Karen Rehder's practice. I've often felt like I was getting leached for additional procedures and costs, and after hearing my sister's experience as well as reviews on other sites, I know that I am not the only one now. The pros: She has always been quick to take me in for scheduled exams. I know that some of her other patients have suffered through long waits, but mine have always been prompt. I think this might be because I schedule late appointments or the earliest. Dr. Rehder and her staff are also very gentle during procedures. I do not like the anal portion of the exam and find it needless, but pap smears are pretty much painless. The cons: Every time I see Dr. Rehder, I'm asked to come back in for follow-ups for bad pap smears. However, during my follow-up appointment, the condition is magically gone! No problems! Yet Dr. Rehder still insists that I come back every three months for additional pap smears until my regular annual. For a working woman with a set work schedule, this is a huge inconvenience. Every year I get hit with the same story. I've about had it with four pap smears a year when my second smear is always clean. The horror story: My sister developed very tender skin all around her vagina right after she and her boyfriend first started dating. The tender skin broke into sores, and she immediately went to Dr. Rehder for an appointment. Dr. Rehder's PA took one look at my sister and told her that she had Herpes. My sister was stunned, as her boyfriend did not, and she didn't think that it was possible that she could have contracted the disease. The PA performed the test, gave Laura a prescription (which was hundreds of dollars to fill on great insurance), and she left in shock. Weeks passed, and my sister heard NOTHING back from the office. She finally called for her results. The test had come back negative, but no one bothered to tell my sister the results. In the meantime, she had filled the prescription and was taking costly medicine that A. couldn't treat her symptoms and B. gave her additional skin side effects. My sister saw another doctor to correctly diagnose her problem. She had simply developed a severe form of acne. My sister has skin issues, she when she and her boyfriend started having regular sex, it irritated her skin. That was the only problem. HERPES?! And to not call and correct my sister when she cried every night for weeks thinking that she had an STD? I was appalled. I won't be going back to Dr. Rehder. I simply do not trust her diagnoses. read more

Dr Rehder and her practice does not offer IUDs because she claims they don't work, which is not scientifically accurate. IUDs work extremely well. If you schedule an appointment here, expect inaccuracies. This practice is more religiously-focused than many other offices, so if you like that sort of thing, great. This is the place for you. I prefer my doctor to focus on medical facts and not his or her own religious beliefs. This office also lost the results to tests and I personally had to call the lab to have them resent. You could not pay me to go back. They also ask for a $200 payment up front for new patients, regardless of whether or not you have insurance. (I did.) So if you only owe a co-pay of $20, they charge you $200, and then give you a refund a few weeks later if it turns out you actually have insurance. It's bizarre. I've never had another doctor's office do this. Two thumbs down on this one. read more

I highly recommend Dr. Rehder and her practice. The staff are caring and really take the the time to listen, I have never felt rushed. I first came to Dr. Rehder about 3 years ago when I was seeking a second opinion about a recommended hysterectomy, as my GYN doctor at the time was dismissive and abrupt when explaining why I needed to have this surgery, leaving me uncertain on the decision. Dr. Rehder carefully listened to me and helped me understand the benefits and risks of the procedure, making it so much easier to come to a decision and helping me feel more calm and positive about it. I never felt coerced, rushed or pressured as I had felt with the other GYN doctor. I switched care to her practice, she completed the needed surgery with very good skill and I healed quickly and well. I plan to stay with her for all my GYN care because she is professional, warm and very knowledgeable. read more
