The options on where to eat are many, but we wandered off the heavily populated path to O Garimpo. The outdoor seating area is called the Bier Garten and for good reason, the menu is chock full of German delights and the beer menu is surprisingly varied (an uncommon find in a small town). The indoor seating was just as lovely and the clientele either already knew this place existed or happened upon it as we did. I'm guessing it's the former because both dining areas filled up rather quickly. The bratwurst I ordered wasn't my favorite, but that might be simply because (as it turns out) I don't like bratwurst style sausages. I'm more into the red sausages like chorizo (which you won't find here, sadly). My date went with the fish topped with capers and while it was pretty smothered in sauce, it was still a nice white fish that came lightly breaded in panko. For those craving Brazilian food, O Garimpo also offers items like bolinhos and feijoada and actually lots of other stuff too. A well-known fact is that this place offers great live music, typically rock.

Whatever the situation is, you get O Garimpo, a quaint restaurant in Embu that serves up both Brazilian and German dishes! After walking around the marketplace for quite some time, my friend's grandpa was getting hungry so we decided to break for lunch. My friend's mom frequents O Garimpo while in Embu, so we walked up the hill from the marketplace to the restaurant. Its kind of hard to tell where O Garimpo is...if you blink you could easily miss it. The actual sign that says "O Garimpo" is a small brown sign, so you should look for the "Biergarten" sign over a walkway instead. When we went on a Saturday around 12:30pm, the restaurant was busy but not packed. We were seated at a table outdoors looking over the garden next to the restaurant. The views of the garden were nice and peaceful...such a change in scenery from the hustle and bustle of the marketplace down the hill. My friend's mom and aunty ordered several of O Garimpo's Brazilian offerings that we shared family style, and everything was delicious. We had feijoada (black beans w/chunks of meat), crispy pork skins, and a savory seafood stew with sides of Brazilian rice, oranges, and veggies. Though it didn't seem like we ordered enough, the feijoada was surprisingly really filling! I don't eat beans on a regular basis at home, but the bean dishes in Brazil, especially O Garimpo's feijoada, were spectacular. The seafood stew had a mix of shrimp, squid, fish, and peppers, and the spices used in the stew reminded me of curry. I mixed a little bit of everything together and, although it looked gross, it tasted great! The service here was also noteworthy, as waiters checked on us frequently to make sure we were all good. O Garimpo is definitely a great spot to eat at if you are visiting Embu! TL;DR - great service, German and Brazilian menu options, and amazing feijoada!

Chef Mara Salles is well known for celebrating Brazil's regional cuisines, and the restaurant has earned a Bib Gourmand recognition for its quality and value. We had the option to sit inside or on the patio, and since the weather was perfect, we chose the patio. Inside looked inviting too--warm wood, white tablecloths, and a stylish bar. The service was friendly, though our server didn't speak English, which made ordering a little tricky. We used a translator app several times, which worked fine but slowed things down. The food was worth it. We started with the zucchini chips (addictive!) and quickly learned the chilies on the table are very hot--be careful. For appetizers, we had the Comissão de Frente (pastries filled with shrimp) and the Bolinho Errado com Aioli de Pequi (manioc balls with homemade cheese). Both were excellent. For mains, we tried the Bobó de Camarão, a shrimp dish in creamy manioc with coconut--rich and comforting. The Barreado, beef slow-cooked for 10 hours in a clay pot, was tender and deeply flavorful. Overall, Tordesilhas gave us a warm welcome to São Paulo dining. The food was authentic and memorable, and while the language barrier made things a little slower, it was still one of the highlights of our trip.

The ambiance was rustic, which fit the food perfectly. Make sure you go on a Saturday to try Brazil's national dish, the Feijoada.

France has Cassoulet. Brazil double dog dares with Fejoada (fay-zzzhwa-dah)…read more I asked the hotel receptionist where to go for Fejoada. She pointed me to Bolinha. It is the weekend and the ubiquitous Brazilian dish is their signature buffet. So everything came to the table! The 10 cuts of meat include bacon, pork chop, oxtail, pig ear, beef tongue, linguica, brisket, ham hock, and pork knuckles. The broth is brimming with collagen--so they offer salsa, hot sauce, and fresh orange slices to resuscitate your palette. Thicken the broth with toasted nut flour if you wish. There's fried sweet banana and yucca, pork rinds and crispy bacon on the side, perfect rice and shredded collard greens. Assuage your guilt with shots of house caipirinha. Think a sweeter margarita on the rocks... The very patient and sweet maitre'd offered me dessert. He's thinks he is so funny! While I have no reference to compare this example to others as it was my first taste of Fejoada, the standard is set immensely high. Not cheap at R150 total bill ($40). But this memory has been seared indelibly into my food coma'd brain. And now I understand why they have such a light dinner. Time for a siesta to recover. !!! Bring a translator (Google translate is pretty good) if you don't speak Portuguese. Inhouse WiFi available.

This hole in the wall wouldn't drag you in due to its simplicity, a few tables outside, small parking lot filled with cars, fluorescent lights, counter deli, and packed with people. Been here twice already and can't wait to go there again. As I'd mentioned before, this place is a gem, it's a mom and pop shop where owner Stephan greets all patrons and his wife takes orders. Why did I took so long to write a 1000 star review for a place like this? Simple, this place deserves a detailed review. Here we go, what did I eat? Glad you asked: Basterma, fresh curd: Have never tasted anything like this! Slices of cured meat with some paprika, rolled on some fresh zesty curd, topped off with pistachios. Got an extra sunny side up egg to enrich this experience. Bottarga: thin slices of cured bottarga. Thought that only the Japanese ate cured mullet roe... My bad! Must love fish, SMG's Bottarga is beautiful. Pungent taste although not overpowering. Esfiha de Cebola: onion sfiha. Two words to describe an amazing morsel of food! Sfiha bread is light and crisp, filled with a cream of caramelised onions, curd, topped with crispy fried onions. All sfihas here good, but this one is outstanding. Kibe Montado: steak tartare, baked kibe, steak tartare, fattoush like salad, fresh curd, crispy fried onions, mint. It's amazing how fresh each ingredient is and how it blends all together. Hans' couscous: Hey now, that's how Stephan calls it! Semolina couscous, prawns, shrimp, mussels, octopus, fish, squid. Just imagine all these fresh seafood cooked in slow simmered made to order with spices, herbs, tomatoes, peppers, than some semolina couscous to soak up all juices... Chocolate Mousse: damn. Semi sweet chocolate mousse topped off with crushed roasted pistachios. Damn. Knefe: ricotta, phyllo, angel hair, preserved apricot. An explosion of textures, softness from ricotta, sweet from apricots, saltiness from ricotta, and lots of crunch! Bolo de Pistache: (Pistacchio cake): pistachio crust, pistachio filling. pistachio syrup. A tad dry with all these pistachios, but great burst of flavour of... You've got it! Pistachio! Can't wait to return! Oh btw, this place is jammed packed, they only take reservations until 1 or 2pm and after that is pure madness, but worth the wait!
