Relay is mostly a European newsstand found in most airports and train stations, and is similar to the UK's WH Smith and US's Hudson Dufry. This particular Relay Newsstand is at CDG in the international section, next to many of the upscale Duty Free stores and close to Starbucks. I was able to purchase several international language newspapers and books here for our long flight back. The lines were short and you could also purchase beverages and sandwiches as well. read more

This place is tres expensive! Gah! I was quite impressed with the depth of their reading materials. People go far out of their way to read the French Vogue magazine, or the Parisian Cosmo. That's what I was doing here, anyhow. I was thrilled to see that they have all the weird European magazines that I always long for overseas, and have to resort to reading a digital version. They had Le Monde, the Parisian view of the world news. They proudly carry Charlie Hebdo, the controversial newspaper. They have the comics of Asterix, the Belgian viking. The prices on everything was pretty marked up. They had some souvenirs of Paris, and a special tricky section where it's "Half off!*" (*The second item when you buy two.) The clerks were typically aloof. They sold old looking sandwiches and incredibly marked up sodas. I skipped out on the food. There are better options in the terminal. read more

Air France gave me a €26 voucher due to my excessive delay getting out of Detroit that caused me to misconnect and spend a bunch of "bonus" time in the CDG airport. Since I have access to the Air France Salon lounge, I ate and drank there in relative comfort. And it's free. So now I have this voucher and what to do with it... Relay to the rescue! I found some interesting and unique chocolate and candy items to bring home as a gift. They fit well into my backpack. Relay also has drinks, snacks, plenty of reading materials and the things you would expect from an airport gift shop. And yes, they accepted my Air France voucher as payment. Relay is a convenience store chain found in French airports and large train stations. I stopped by one of the Orly locations to purchase local SIM cards. It was an easy experience. The employee didn't speak much english, but quickly understood that I wanted a SIM card. She asked if we wanted data (of course!), and offered me an SFR card (that is one of the local cell carriers) with 15gb of data valid for 20 or 30 days, I believe. I believe it was 15 euro per card, which is a great deal. I was flustered because I had forgotten to pack the tool needed to pop out the sim card tray on my phone -- luckily, the employee was prepared, and had a sim card popout tool right at the front counter. The activation was quick and easy -- after popping in the card, the web browser redirected me to site where I just registered my name/email, and voilla! -- I had internet. read more

I was scouting duty free shops, as asked by my wife, to perhaps come by on my way back home. This is a more typical airport kiosk type of shop, where they carry little gifts and chocolate bars - everyone seems to grab a long Toblerone triangular stick. I always knew that Toblerone was a Swiss chocolate, but just found out it used to be owned by Kraft. Here at Relay you can pick up a snack or a magazine before your flight, or some souvenirs, especially if you're short for time, just passing by, on a tight schedule. read more
