Freddy's offers three things together that I absolutely love: being active, history and food. On top of that, you're getting humour and great company too. The four hour tour was about $50 and includes the bike and helmet rental. The historical component was comprehensive, you learn about the Indigenous origins, first settlers and ongoing immigration, historical context, architecture, graffiti alley, culture, sport and more than I could continue to list. Freddy himself is very knowledgable, humorous, and downright likeable. He's an extremely gifted storyteller and you're not only gaining information, but he also effectively relayed the significance and even quirks of each spot we covered. Altogether, you get a great sense of the city from its origins to where it brings us at present day. It's timed very well, and you're given several opportunities to go and explore some spaces on your own for a few minutes at a time (he'll stay and watch the bikes). We ate together as a group at a spot (sorry, forgot the name). It was a wonderful meal and the experience of connecting with other unique individuals added to the experience. Absolutely cannot be missed if you're in town, and it's done at a pace that should be accessible to most. Tips: free water with Yelp check in. He also rents the bikes for individual use. They're not snobby toward commuter riders and noobs on a budget the way some bike places are, and seem genuinely keen to help customers get the most out of their ride. Despite the trend toward single brand shops in Melbourne (e.g. Specialized), Cycles Galleria appears to have a handpicked selection from several manufacturers, ranging from cute hybrids with baskets and kickstands up to sleek full carbon road and cyclocross bikes, plus some innovative belt drive commuters. Their prices are very competitive even though the rent must be horrendous in a city mall, and they'll consider price matching where it's reasonable. As another reviewer suggested, CBD traffic isn't great for test riding bikes, although at quieter times of day the area is perfect for trying out climbs and descents. She got a flat bar road bike (Vida Carbon 2014) which was aimed at a more introductory mark with potential to develop, and I bought a high end road bike (Tarmac SL4) that is an upgrade on my Giant TCR. I walked my busted bike in expecting a judging look from the staff and a 'tsk tsk' of the tongue. Instead, they immediately grabbed my bike, strung it up and said "this'll take about 15 minutes." EFFICIENCY. The boys even gave her a brisk polish and fixed some loose screws (I told you I treat it badly) and then gave her a quick spin around the block to make sure it was a comfortable ride. Now THAT is good customer service. Velo is stocked with bikes and all the accessories you could imagine, and truly is a one-stop shop for keen cyclists and noobs alike.

They provided a fantastic road bike, set me up with a spare tube and helmet, and even were very generous and gave me a water bottle when I asked at no charge and said I could keep it. These guys were awesome and such a pleasure and great fun I found them. They are bikers and are passionate and gave me great tips on rides for the 2 days. You can get a better service for your Giant, Kona or Malvern Star at the (confusingly named) Abbotsford cycles just the other side of Richmond station. Total Rush is for performance machines, whereas there they like to tinker. The cafe isn't too bad. The coffee is decent and they make their own snacks on premises. However, it's not outstanding. Decent, but I can't imagine why you'd head out to this corner of Punt Road unless you were there for the bikes.
