We also wanted an an estimate for a new humidifier, to change out the lavatory handles that had been installed backwards, replace a utility room faucet, and to do a general inspection of all the plumbing In our house. We have plans to add a new bathroom to our unfinished basement and he had good advice about that. The humidifier went in without a hitch! The handles on the lavatories were changed without a problem! The new utility sink faucet that was installed was a dream! My lavatory leaks though...these had to be tinkered wIth several times., on several different days. You are thinking, WHY FIVE STARS???? I called Mattioni to look at my toilet which was making a strange vibrating sound. Upon a quick inspection, they told me I needed a new filler valve and flapper. First, they tried to pitch me on their "membership" at least 3 times. Then they asked if I wanted to buy a new water heater. When it came time for my actual estimate, they priced rebuilding my entire toilet, which when pressed they admitted was completely unnecessary for my issue (but would "help with future longevity"). When I asked how much it would cost just to fix my specific issue (a new filler value and flapper), they came up with the insane cost of $480. I declined. For a $15 trip to the hardware store and about 10 minutes of work with a YouTube video, now my toilet works just fine.

Had him replace two geothermal well "boosted" water heaters at a time when getting supplies was as challenging as finding tradesmen who took COVID seriously. We liked him so much from that job that we had him back and expanded his work to plumb and install a utility sink in our basement (there wasn't one before). And that's when things took a turn for the worse. The sink needed a pump to push the water to the sewer line. In the process of doing that, an outlet in the room above got killed. He came back and fixed it in a timely fashion, but said "I'm not an electrician". Well, neither am I but I know when I've left a wire disconnected in a gang box. We had also discussed at the start of the job that the sink would be anchored to the poured concrete wall. When he was finished, it wasn't attached to anything (which is a recipe for leaks). He said he didn't feel comfortable doing it. What he should've done is tell me that up front and then I could've prepped the area for him and installed a board for him to anchor the sink to. I can't stand when tradesmen do whatever they want without consulting with the home owner - I was there the whole time. I didn't give him any grief about it, was just glad to have a sink in the basement where one didn't exist and I handled it from there. What really soured me was that we reached out to him in July for an issue with our HVAC system. He said he'd 'let me know when he could swing by." Why not just set up an appointment? July became August. So I emailed him again. Same evasive response. I figured maybe the job wasn't big enough for him, so I sweetened the pot with a couple of other odds and ends to make it a day long job. Again, an evasive reply. I am willing to give people the benefit of the doubt and I try and build long-term relationships with good companies, especially when referrals from a friend. In October, when we had a problem that really needed immediate attention - he told me to call him. I called him. And got the same non-committal response. If you don't want the job because it's too complicated, too small, or whatever, have the professionalism to just say as much. Thankfully, his weirdness drove us to another plumber who is fantastic!
