Food 5 stars. Service 3 stars. Ambiance 2 stars. Mind you we were told 20 mins into our 45 min wait that they are short staffed. However the business practice on how they handled short staff was not efficient. They had multiple open tables when we walked in and were told it was a 45-50 min wait. We were just about to leave but the two parties ahead of us already gave up and went somewhere else so we got seated early. It made no sense to have over 1/2 the restaurant not seated. You need to just seat people if there are open tables and just mention the kitchen is short staffed. There were two other waitresses and the host who was also seating and serving people. A lot of standing around. Not a good look and when you could have made extra money seating people and serving drinks and appetizers. With that said the food was very good and authentic and when we did have staff they were very nice but never got water refilled or got extra silverware or napkins. Today was my first time in this awesome place! We had to wait a little bit to get seated but it was worth the wait. Great customer service and good recommendations from our waitress. We had the empanada platter with the choice of Boricua and El Capitan empanadas, maduros, white rice, black beans and cabbage on the side with the salsa verde and a Mexican jarrito. Food tested very awesome, testy and healthy. The flavors were great. After I finish my plate me and my wife we order 2 Guava cheese empanadas and a Cubana empanada,that was the best decision ever, this empanadas test like heaven. I love Venezuelan empanadas made with harina pan. I was disappointed when I walked in and realized the empanadas here are made with wheat flour and therefore not gluten free. My go to is the empanada platter but I can honestly say I've never had anything that was bad here. They run specials that are always great. I love to Cubano and Jalapeno ham popper empanadas. The last time I was here, my favorite empanada was on the lunch special deal, the "El Capitan" (beef, egg, olive & raisin), so of course I had to have this. Service has always been excellent. Stopped by for lunch with a friend after the Mesa Farmers Market. Restaurant was a short walk from the farmers market. Friendly greeting and social distancing protocols were followed. We never made it past the host. Not a family friendly place. We asked to go to the patio and the host said it was full. We asked how long for a table out there and the host said 20 to 30 minutes after he contemplated it for what seemed like 5 minutes. We saw that there were 2 tables not being used and asked if he could split us up and sit at the 2 tables. These tables were the "high top tables" and he told us that he couldn't sit us at those tables because we have kids that might fall off the stools. My kids are 7, 11 and 13, not toddlers. We rolled our eyes and left. I guess we'll wait until our kids are adults to come back. I wonder if Guy Fieri were to come back with his kids if they would let them sit at the "high top tables"? We split an empanada platter picking an El Capitan and a mushroom, spinach & artichoke empanadas. PLUS a Dizzy fig sweet empanada. Everything was delicious. The empanadas were cooked perfectly. We didn't get up to order more because the line to order is very slow. Updating my review on Republica Empanada. Unfortunately after trying out multiple different empanada places, we found the food here to be good but nothing stellar. I had the Empanada platter with the Republica Chicken and the Jalapeño Popper. The platter came with rice, beans, cabbage salad, and maduro's & creama. My husband got the same platter with the Pernil and the Cubana. I personally liked both of the empanadas but the side dishes were a bit bland. The service was good and we enjoyed sitting outside. Didn't get a chance to try the food, because they had run out before 2:00 PM! I did call numerous times before driving there, which was about an hour drive. The restaurant was closed because they ran out of food. They saw many people coming to the door and just plain ignored everyone. Extremely poor management! If they had answered their phone, it would have saved me the 2 hour round trip. SAD!!! I might reconsider changing the review if they make changes in their management.
