Brilliant view of the ocean and potentially the sunset, however, since it's autumn the sun sets early most diners won't see it as the restaurant is open for dinner at 5pm only. We arrived a bit before 5 and got to enjoy the view for a bit before it was too dark. Too bad they're not open earlier in the day. Our server was kind, and helpful. I also noticed how they helped other tables make their drink and food choices with good sense of humor. Food was good. I particularly liked the salad, sablefish, and the duck. We had fond memories of having been there 12 years ago and were looking forward to returning. It must have been an off night, as our waitress treated us like we were an imposition. It did look like the other waitresses were more attentive. We should have known when she greeted us saying what are you drinking, no welcome, have you been here before, no description of the tasting menu option. To say the choices were limited would be giving them more credit, but I'm good with limited choices if the food is amazing. Unfortunately, the salad was sad with little flavor and only a few blackberries. The Wagyu beef was Okay. We cut our losses and left before dessert. We stopped by the Whale Cove Inn to look at rooms for our next trip to the Oregon Coast. They kindly showed us a couple of rooms and we will definitely stay here our next trip to the Oregon Coast. When we saw the atmosphere of for the Restaurant Beck, we were interested in dining reservations for dinner that evening. Once we took a look at the menu and chatted with one of the chef's (Jason), we were completely hooked. We were starving and they fortunately had a 5pm reservation. We had a phenomenal table for two with one of the most amazing views. Food (5 of 5): tartare, salad, halibut, cod, crème brûlée ... it was all excellent. The pork belly was outstanding as was the salad the 2nd time we ate here. Yes, Restaurant Beck was so delicious that we made another reservation and came back a couple of days later for another dinner. Service (5): although both evenings we dined here the one server was overwhelmed with tables (including chatty patrons), the service they provided was outstanding with wonderful recommendations in terms of food and wine. With the view here, we took our time enjoying the meal and the pacing of the courses by the very busy server (and I'm sure kitchen) was excellent. Atmosphere (10): the overall setting is beautiful. An advantage of an early reservation (5pm) is that they will guarantee a window seat. We so thoroughly enjoyed our cocktails, appetizers, wine and the courses we ordered. The atmosphere and the pace and quality of service made for two wonderful dinners. We will definitely be back to stay at the inn and look forward to eating at Restaurant Beck multiple times. Portion size and denying service for an extra small order of bread. Male waiter was rude which I gladly would have paid for, but he said we are out of bread, but when we left the kitchen had plenty of bread. If you can't spare a slice of bread with a $160 meal for two, something appears to be wrong. This was my third time there, last two times were great. I loved eating at the Beck! I've been searching for some higher scale food on the coast for awhile now. The dishes here are small, and you will need to order multiple if you want to fill up. This is not a place for giant plate lovers or kids. Get the salmon tartar, it's absolutely fabulous. I personally love tartar, so it's above all my favorite. The pork belly is very nicely cooked and this time it's was accompanied by peach pieces and a small berry miso ice cream scoop. It sounds weird, but it's deliciousssss! The American Wagyu is delicious as well, very tender and soft. The black cod is very interesting as well, has a lot of bold flavors with a hint of smoky. The menu does change, so your experience may be different from my own. Be sure get a reservation because it's a smaller place and can fill quickly. Best meal I've had in a long time. We were traveling along the Oregon coast, staying the night in Newport, and made a reservation for dinner. We had the Waygu steak, black cod, and rockfish--all were excellent, as were deserts and the latte I had after dinner. Service was provided by Lonna, who was also a delight. The view can't be beat as well--right on the cliff above the ocean. I don't think you can do better than Restaurant Beck if you're in the area. I'd say it's a little pricey, but it's a case of you get what you pay for at Restaurant Beck. Make a rez if you can, but if not, give them a try anyway. read more

Location: Housed in the Whale Cove Inn, separate entities but connected like peanut butter and jelly. It is a special combination. If you live or travel to Oregon's central coast, then you NEED to enjoy a magnificent dinner at Restaurant Beck. We're luck enough to live within fives minutes, but it's still a special occasion restaurant for us - or a way to make any occasion special. Last week, I surprised my wife with a mid-week dinner there, and it was one of the best meals we've had - ever. The views are amazing and General Manager Lonna is the consummate professional - classy, but fun and relaxed. We started with two shaken martinis, delivered with shimmering ice crystals and so good. For starters, we had the Fennel Apple Bisque and the Pork Belly - both amazing and unusual dishes (who combines pork belly with espresso ice cream? What an amazing bite!). For entrees, my wife had the Black Cod - flawlessly prepared and so subtle and perfect in flavoring. I tried (for the first time in my life) hedgehog mushroom Stuffed Quail - OMG! For dinner we shared a Buttermilk Panna Cotta (with a refreshing honey-citrus compote) and I enjoyed a nice aged port (I know - I should have had a dessert with with the panna cotta, but I like my port!) plus a mug of lovely black, bitter coffee. What an amazing meal and such a wonderful restaurant. We've been there at least a half-dozen times, both ordering off the menu and doing their tasting meal with wine pairings. It's painful to have to give four stars, because the restaurant is so very nice, the staff is amazing, the food is so good. But on Valentine's Day, there was a table of four, a man and three women who ruined the atmosphere for everyone that was there for a romantic dinner. They were so loud they should've been in a sports bar, laughing having a great time at the expense of everyone that was paying at least $200 a table. I was told that they come a lot and that the staff has to put up with it...not cool. I would like to bring this to management's attention; how many people are gonna leave your restaurant pissed off because your staff couldn't deal with people that were ruining it for everyone else??? read more

This place is special. My wife and I agreed that this was a top 5 dining experience in our lives. The meal was better than many 1-star Michelin restaurants we have been to. It is located in a small boutique hotel called the whale cove inn and has the most amazing views you could ask for. The restaurant is intimate with only about 10 tables. Service was exceptional. Lisa was our server and she was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. She helped make sure accomodations were made for my pregnant wife, and made tweaks to the menu that she thought would enjoy. We were extremely pleased with her service. The food options are limited, which is exactly what you expect in an establishment like this. I'm actually surprised they even have an a la carte menu, since most fine dining restaurants nowadays only have tasting menus. We chose to go with the 4 course tasting menu and I got the optional wine pairing. The night started with the focaccia bread which was good but not stellar. The butter they served it with was very tasty. The first course was a black cod with escabeche of picked veggies, gribiche and malt vinegar. This dish was very good. The sauces worked very well with the fish and you had a nice balance or salt, fat and acid. The cod was crispy and the pommes souffle added the textural component you look for. The wine pairing was excellent. A French savoie wine that was slightly dry and fruity. The next course was the pork belly with confit garlic ice cream, fermented blueberries and fennel. This dish was incredible and my favorite of the night. The garlic ice cream was perfect with the pork since the pork belly was fried and a little dry. The creaminess of the garlic ice cream, the tartness of the blueberries, and the crunch of the fennel were in perfect balance. The wine pairing was a light red which I can't remember but was wonderful. The third course was the wagyu beef bavette. This is the chefs playful interpretation of a deconstructed Reuben with sauerkraut, a homemade rye cracker, and thousand island inspired sauce. The wagyu was brined and sou-vide to a lovely tenderness. The wine was a sangiovese which was not too heavy or dry and had a few fruit notes to lift the dish. The final course was an almond frangipane with vanilla ice cream, whiskey soaked cherries and rice pudding. This was my wife's favorite and a close 2nd for me. Exceptional dessert paired with a lovely Hungarian tokaji dessert wine which was actually my favorite pairing of the night. Made a reservation online here for July 4th. Emailed using address on website with question about vegetarian options as their sample menu showed none. Received no reply after several days so called. Was told yes, they can accommodate a vegetarian given enough notice. One day of, we arrived and had our temperature taken at front door. That was end of Covid precautions, no masks inside. We were seated promptly and drink order taken (two cocktails). Server returned several minutes later and took dinner order we reminded him one of us was a vegetarian and he described the one option for entree (mushrooms) which was fine. I ordered steak. First course came, still no cocktails so we asked and he had totally forgotten to put the order in. We eventually got them, and they were good. Food overall was good to excellent. Portions were small, but we did get a second order of bread to fill us up. While eating got to see a whale in the cove outside. After we were done went out on deck to take a closer look. My superlatives and hyperbole are real, and Restaurant Beck provided our finest dining experience of the Pacific Northwest. This was Michelin starred dining, and the "press clippings" for Restaurant Beck well deserved. The James Beard awards don't always get it right, but in this case, they were spot on! The Whale Cove Inn where Restaurant Beck is located, is a rather unassuming building, lying smack dab on Highway 101. However, the cove the building sits on is spectacular, matching some of the great restaurant settings in the world, including the acclaimed El Bulli. The laid back tude of the staff and the chill ambiance are surprising at first; more Portland than San Francisco. Yet, soon the flannel shirt vibe and warm, comforting buzz seems fitting. Harmony was our server. She was fantastic, her name fitting the culinary treasures emerging from Restaurant Beck's kitchen. We opted for the 5 course dinner, a veritable bargain at $95.00 a head. Albacore tuna in dill, fennel and honey was lip smackin good. Next was a perfect Ling Cod with squash and parsnip chips. Fresh strawberries were the ideal "dancing partners" for the delicate duck mousse. A simple Wagyu steak was uplifted by a serving of berries, that added something special only a talented chef would devise. Flourless chocolate cake was the crescendo finale of our meal. Looking out the window, I was thrilled about the quality of the cooking. The setting is so gorgeous, the restaurant could serve mediocre food, and get by with that incredible view. Yet, this was a fantastic culinary experience. Restaurant Beck is a dining treasure, a foodie "mecca," and should be a pilgrimage for all gourmets and gourmands. read more

I have been I coming here for 6 years and can very honestly say that the negative (or less than perfect) reviews for this restaurant are from those who do not have an appreciation for local, honest food prepared with exquisite attention to detail. If you are looking for big plates filled with processed food from the Sysco truck - Restaurant Beck is not for you. But if you are looking for restaurant experience that will truly blow your mind - this is the place. Update: we come here 2 or 3 times a year and have since 2011. Last night was the first time we have been disappointed with the offering. It just seems to be going downhill. The creativity and ever changing menu have given way to a simpler approach. My husband and I ate at Restaurant Beck back in September. We did the pescatarian chef's tasting and were looking forward to doing that again since different things are in season now. While the food was fine, the tasting was straight off the menu-no surprises, nothing creative-overall it was just extremely disappointing. We started with tuna, moved onto to beet salad, then rockfish and finished off with ebleskivers. I was probably most underwhelmed by the ebleskivers. They were extremely greasy, didn't have any sort of filling and just weren't good. Everything else was fine but just that-fine-nothing stood out. Based on this visit, I wouldn't recommend it. They do have great scenery in the summer months and I guess they may put more effort into the chefs tasting then. read more
