It is only fitting that my 100th review on Yelp would be one of my most memorable dining experiences in my life! One of the boyfriend's Dutch friends invited us to dinner as we were staying in Enschede for a couple days. He said Kostershoes is considered the best restaurant in Enschede...and he was right! It is right around the corner from the train station near the "bustling" center of the town. It is not wheelchair accessible and has no accessible (I will use the European term) Toilet, but between us, we were able to bump the boyfriend up the 1 step to get inside.
It was an AMAZING experience. We were in this great restaurant which appeared to be a small converted home. There were 4 of us total (3 Americans, and 1 Dutch) and it was just one of those moments where I just relished hearing Dutch all around me having no clue what anyone was saying...and so humbled to have this awesome experience. Ok, enough sappiness. On to the food.
They did have an English menu, which appeared to be smaller than the Dutch menu- but I can't say for sure since Dutch words are long! The waiter spoke some English, so it wasn't a problem ordering (of course it helps when you have someone who speaks Dutch with you to assist if needed!) The boyfriend and I ordered an appetizer of bread, and butternut squash ravioli. The bread was filled with herbs and came with a garlic butter spread and another spread with herbs in it. The butternut squash ravioli was to die for. Wonderful rich sauce-but not too heavy and I think it had toasted hazelnuts in it. Oh. So. Good. The waiter recommended a sauvingnon blanc wine for me, which I normally don't like since they can be sweet, but this was crisp and tart.
For my meal I had the salmon with soy sauce glaze. If there was ANY disappointment in the meal, it was that my salmon was slightly overcooked. I even ordered dessert at the end of the meal -which I never do - when I saw they had a cherry dessert. It had a small cherry "muffin", cherry ice cream and a cherry mousse.
We ate like Europeans and spent about 2 1/2 hours over our meal, just talking and enjoying the moment. The food was amazing, and the atmosphere was so memorable I will never forget this experience. read more
