Personally i love this place. The tortillas are handmade which is always a plus for me but the tacos can be GREASY. No one is expecting nice and lean no oily tacos but these were greasy, thankfully since the tortilla was thick and handmade it could hold up and wasn't tearing at all. Flavor wise it was great and people at the front are always great. Its a nice little vibe inside and service has always been good. Came in for a family dinner . The restaurant has a good amount of space to cater for bigger groups . The home made salsa de molcajete is my favorite ever ! Tried out the chicken/meats mix with shrimp this time. The meal comes with rice, beans and tortillas. It's advertised for 2-3 people, but you can share with more as it's huge portions! Food was Terrible! Got 6 tacos and a burrito de asada for the kids and myself, the asada had Zero flavor, absolutely no salt whatsoever. The burrito also with no flavor, I've also never seen so much cheese in a burrito ever, every bite was a mouthful of cheese. The wife got a "super taco" same story no flavor! All the salt was found in the guacamole, the Guacamole had what looked like a pile of salt just thrown on top. We also got a whole chicken, now the chicken did have flavor but it was very dry, total cost was $90. Overall the food was terrible and do not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I come to El Asadero at least once a month, and it never disappoints! I always get the full roasted chicken--it's perfectly smoked and comes with a generous side of beans and rice, plus handmade tortillas. My wife, my two young kids, and I usually have a tab of about $50, which is an incredible value for the amount of food you get. Look man I see a lot of negative reviews I've been coming here since I was a kid and it's the best damn taco you can get in the city. They don't speak much English but they get by. A lot of people's complaints stem from the fact that they aren't from the area n r most likely so damn tourists who expect a silver platter treatment. Gtfo they don't need you. N shut up. This is a well-established restaurant in my hometown, Melrose Park, IL. Their parking lot is usually full, and most of the tables have diners enjoying their meal. I love their casual, homey ambience. They have regular flatware -- no plastic forks, etc. There's usually a line of customers. but they move their line efficiently, which means my order comes up quickly. I appreciate they give a basket of chips and several different types of sauces to enjoy while waiting for my (fast!) food. I can not figure out the bad reviews. The place is full of local community people eating here all the time. They do a busy takeaway business. The meals first amazing chips and salsa. I had the grilled chicken steaks enchiladas burritos tortas and the carne apache. All were great and I've eaten all the places in melrose and Berwyn. The must try is the carne apache cut up steak grilled with onions and chilli de abrol just amazing. The homemade tortillas are thick but I love them. A lot has been said about the waitstaff but we have a server and she is so friendly greats us takes great of us and honestly is one of the nicest servers. I think some people don't get the vibe you seat urself go up to register to pay and the staff is Mexican so English is the second language there but smile and all they staff is so helpful. read more

This was our go to place for Mexican lunches. Until yesterday. My group was sitting and as I walked in I glanced on the floor and noted a huge cockroach go right by my friends foot. He kicked it when I pointed it out and so it was laying on it's back trying to right itself back up. This of course freaked the "girls" in the group and so we simply walked out. The one guy said to the waitress that we changed our minds. I yelled at him, he should of told her the real reason since he was speaking to her in Spanish. Oh well. The way I see it, if the roach is out during the day, there's an infestation. The good thing is that he was slow which means he's been poisoned. My fear is what else are they walking on. Oh well, I'm sure the boys will be back cause when I suggested going across the street the one guy says "why would I go somewhere that I have no knowledge of? The food was a 3 star performance but the service knocked it down, big time. I don't understand how they only have 2 waitresses for the entire restaurant that was about 90% full on a day where most Spanish people celebrate their Mother's Day today. Nothing new with the parrillada. A lot of meat cooked to be eaten. The meat was nice and tender mixed in with vegetables. It also came with rice and beans. The rice and beans were mediocre at best. The star was the meat. We also had the grilled chicken. Some parts were nicely done and some dry. The ones that were done correctly tasted good and had a lot of flavor but mostly towards the bones and not the meat. The service was horrible! We got our appetizers and our entrees before even getting our drinks, not even water. I usually rate my service on how they refill my cup of water and they didn't. Mix in that I didn't even receive anything to drink until half of the meal was finished made it worse. Covid-19 has donenmirscles for El Asadero! I was about to give up on this place and then twice during this ridiculous sham of a pandemic, we ordered. Food is so much better than I remembered it last. Almost as good as it used to be. The beef cuts seem to be of better quality or better trimmed. The servings were large. The only downer is the prices. How did 6 meals from this place break $90? If I were to just talk about the carne asada and margarita that I ordered, I would give this place 2 stars. But because I came with a group, I was able to taste some of the other dishes which bumped this up to a 3. The carne asada was expensive ($13) for what you get and my small steak was extremely dry. The margarita was the worst one I've ever had in my life. I guess I was a little concerned when the waitress asked if I wanted liquor in it. Well, yeah! Do I look like I drink Virgin anything? Yes, please, add liquor. The drink came out and had no liquor in it and if it did, it was probably like a thimble-size amount. A baby thimble. The top of the drink had like half an inch of foam from I'm hoping the margarita mix and not from anything else. The good things were the half roasted chicken which was extremely tender and something I would get again, the house made tortillas and the fresh salsa. Came in here after memorial services for a loved one and had the worst service, waitress was very rude, meals were not done correctly and she was ignoring our requests, she was not attentive therefore only creating mistake after mistake. I also received my order last with no utensils and the burrito uncut with a large hole in the tortilla with meat spilling out of it. By the time the order was received it was time to ask for to go boxes. I don't know if they were understaffed but there was no explanation nor apology for the mistakes made during our time there. My boyfriend and I stopped in here one Friday night bc he was hungry and j was thirsty my coworker told me they have really good micheladas. My boyfriend is Mexican and Spanish speaking and I am neither. Our server refused to speak English. It's not because she didn't know it either. I heard her speak perfect English to the table next to ours. I'm not sure if she thought I was Hispanic and should know Spanish or what her problem is, but for that simple fact I will not return to this establishment. As far as the michelada goes it was just okay. It definitely looked a lot better than it tasted. The food was okay as well. The steak didn't have much flavor. The rice and beans were decent. I ended up eating once taco and chips and salsa taking the rest of the plate home and forgetting about it. So it got tossed out. So I guess the food was actually worse than okay. My buddy Mo turned me in to this place. But in Melrose Park everybody is called Mo. But he's the real Mo. Anyone who knocks this place must be used to eating at Taco Bell. This place is psycho good! I drive from 4100 north just to eat here on weekends. They very best salsa and chips I mean the salsa is surely homemade and they aren't stingy with it. Most places love to charge for additional chips and salsa not these folks! The best broasted chicken and chicken salad ever. Excellent chicken cooked in a grill. The prices? I feel like I'm stealing from them! You have to try the menudo on Saturday and Sunday get it early or get nothing at all. I swear I've never had better. Like I said, the prices are insanely reasonable. Homemade tortillas and all. Some complain about the service but I've never had any problems and most of the servers and I can't even understand each other. I just point and spew my little street Spanish and anything I can type into google and we get by. If you can't swing that much don't go make more room fir those of us who appreciate authenticity. On weekends they're packed and have roaming bands and a little old guy who might stop by your table and sell you fresh fresh cheese from his cart. I love it and love supporting the real working folks. Melrose Park has always been ethnic predominantly Italian and Mexican and its always shown in the food. Try this place you cannot beat it. Parking can be a little difficult on weekends but usually plenty on side streets. For those who knock it do us all a favor stay at Chipotle or Taco Bell we need the room at El Asadero. I don't know about this place now. I went here about a month ago and ordered the steak dinner which was great and they even hand make their own tortillas but I just went back today and was very very disappointed. I ordered two taco dinners to go. Well, when I got home: First, the cilantro tasted funny and it was all soggy and wet! That kinda ruined the whole meal, but I took it to go and was hungry so I didn't have the energy to go back which is 15 minutes from my house. I tried taking all the cilantro off but it was hard since it was wet and sticking to the meat. If I ate there, I would have sent it back. Also, everything was lacking flavor from the chips, guacamole, the actual tortilla, and the meat - all no flavor at all!! Are they on a low cholesterol diet! It's a clean, family friendly restaurant with comfortable seating. Food Impressions: Based on previous reviews, I ordered the chicken and I was not at all disappointed. I received a generous portion of chicken, rice, beans, and handmade tortillas. The chicken was beautifully spiced and cooked to perfection, with juicy and flavorful breast meat. Rice and beans are standard. The tortillas were thicker and more doughy than I'm accustomed to, even for handmade, but I'm hesitant to complain, as they were still rather tasty. The tortilla chips were average and likely prepackaged. The red salsa was a bit off-putting with it's sweetness, but the green was good. The other people I was with ordered huaraches and they both remarked that they were excellent. Final Thoughts: I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu.
