I was able to get a menu with a partial English translation (my German is too limited to order much beyond sausages and cutlets). The restaurant offered a modest but sufficient selection, including several standard Bern dishes. There was also a decent selection of wines. I ordered pan-fried trout topped with apples and served on rosti that was very good. The fish was excellently done, and the rosti was good, if a bit oily. The prices were reasonable--CHF 43.20 for dinner, two glasses of wine, and pear sorbet. There are enough good choices on the menu to make this a great place for a family or group.

Fortunately, one of the waiters spoke English well and was able to guide two foreigners through the menu. He was very helpful and told us that there were certain things we shouldn't get (not because they were not good, but because he assumed our palates would not be used to them). We settled on getting noodles with meat sauce, apple sauce, and cheese, as one dish, and pork fillets with finely chopped vegetables as the other. Both dishes were rather tasty and gave us a relatively inexpensive foray into Swiss German cuisine. I would totally recommend this place to anybody traveling through Bern. If you speak German, read the German reviews, I'm sure they are more helpful.

They have a smoking room, and the smell of the smoke is present throughout the restaurant. That is a big minus for me. I had the Berner Rosti, which was pretty good. It's shredded potatoes, cooked with bits of bacon and covered in cheese. The slightly-cooked egg on top finishes the dish. One of my companions had a burger, they didn't ask how he wanted it cooked, and it came well done. The staff was very friendly and fluent in English. I have been to Bern several times, and compared to other restaurants in this price range, I probably wouldn't go back. The service was nice, but it was not speedy. We waited quite a long time before our salads came. We were there on a Tuesday evening around 6:30, so not exactly the peak busy time.

Almost every table was taken outdoors, but I managed to squeeze in. While there is indoor seating, its slightly dark and smelly inside (due to the cheese being cooked!), so do what the Europeans do and enjoy the outdoors! I mean, who doesn't like a plate of melted cheese with potatoes and pickles?! When a dish is mainly cheese, the quality of the cheese is paramount. I'm happy to report that the cheese Le Mazot uses is top-notch. Beware, even if you order the small portion of the raclette, it might as well be a meal within itself. Because by the time I got my rosti, I was stuffed! The rosti was pretty tasty and I was glad to have gotten it with spinach, as otherwise it's pretty dense with the shredded potatoes as a base. It was a nice dish to try, but if I only had to order one, I'd opt for the raclette. Service was good and the food was brought out at a nice pace. Le Mazot is a solid choice to get some Swiss staples without having to search too far.

Basically the whole atmosphere made us felt uncomfortable. By the end of our meal which is around 10pm they started to clean up the restaurant, taking the trash bags out while the restaurant claims to close around 11:30pm and we saw a rat running around while we were eating. In NYC I live across the street from a famous mussels restaurant and it's $25-$28 just for the mussels and you have to add the fries. So this was very very reasonable and it was delicious. The ones in the chive cream sauce I was extremely happy with. Wine list was great. My friends got the pizza and the salmon entrees and both were satisfied. I would definitely be back and recommend when visiting Bern.
