One of the worst food I've ever had in Canada. All of the curries I ordered were not good. None of them was freshly cooked. Looked like they just warmed it up and served. Seven of us had dinner here from across the world, US, Europe, Middle East, India. We all agreed this was the worst Bangladeshi restaurant we had ever eaten Indian food in. Not one of us enjoyed a single dish, so much food was wasted as it was inedible. To give you an example of how bad it was one of our group ordered a tea, even that was cold and he drank it in one gulp. Extremely overpriced for the dishes. Now we understood why it was so quiet. Had a lovely dinner here on Easter Sunday. We didn't have a rez, but it wasn't a problem. The host/owner(?)) seated the 4 of us right away and he also was our waiter for the evening. Just got back and this place was AWESOME. There were 4 of us and we split the appetizer sampler and samosas to start. We split 3 entrees...Poulet Korma, Malai Madras and Shahi Paneer along with garlic and mozzarella naan. The mozzarella naan was SPECTACULAR. So good we ordered a 2nd order. I am not shocked but surprised how this establishment has a 3.9 stars on yelp as of August 2023. My unbiased rating based on a recent visit is a generous one (1) star. The basic idea and of dining out is for the experience, ambience, food quality and a decent service. We have not experienced any of these in the recent visit. Our recent visit was in August , 2023. I am of the Indian origin in USA. So the context is that I am fully appreciative of a reasonably good Indian cuisine. During our visit ( on the Saturday evening ) we did not have a prior reservation. The waiter also manager also water glass filler was super busy and we had to beg him to for a water refill. He showed up after some 30-45 mins to take our food order. Finally, the food came out ( we ordered biryani, naan. And some currys). The biryani portion was more like a kid meal portion. The quality of the biryani was non existent . I wouldn't even call it biryani. Don't expect a Hyderabadi, awadh, Kashmiri, Tirunelveli or any style of biryani here!!! The curry's were pretty awful. It's disappointing to see such a low in the whole experience especially when the restaurant name is Gandhi. It is probably not a mandate for restaurants with great names to be great at the quality . The place was totally noisy and other tables seemed restless from my visual observations. The food is also completely bland (we ordered spice level tobe spicy ) just like the service. So, no I don't recommend this experience to any. If I were to mention one great thing about this place . I'll give you two . 1) the location of the place 2) the interior decor. So we're strolling along the street and happen to go into a GP Boutique store during the Grand Prix weekend. When I asked if they had what I was looking for, the answer was 'no' so I asked the next logical question... 'where's good to eat around here?' Now that was something she could help me with! Out came the phone to google map the restaurant name... huh, a 20 minute walk from where we were? Let me tell you, it was with every step. I wish I could thank the young lady who suggested it to us because she was right, this place is fabulous! We opted for the Chicken Kashmiri and som Aloo Gobi. It would seem that we try Aloo Gobi at every Indian restaurant we go to and this was one of the best! The Chicken Kashmiri I could eat everyday for the rest of my life. Tried this spot out because my dad is always craving Indian food on trips. We decided to go with 2 vegetarian 4 course meal for the 4 of us. We were actually recommended to do this because it comes with a lot of options and would get us full. The waiter was so right and glad we made that call. Restaurant Ghandi makes me feel like I'm back in India without the crazy jet-lag! The decor is minimalist by Indian standards: white table cloths, white walls, some weathered wooden door panels on the wall and a few ferns. When we walked in there was a brigade of waiters dressed smartly in formal wear. We were greeted warmly and escorted to a great window table facing St. Paul. The inexpensive wine list was way better than average having multiple choices in that oh so sweet $65 price point. We ended up with a nice Sancerre that paired beautifully with the spicy dishes to come. Our waiter recommended one of the "dinner for two" options that had a nice salad and starter, followed by three mains and rice (paneer with peas, chicken with a light curry, and lamb with a coconut curry), followed by a dessert platter and tea. The lamb curry was by far the best dish, in fact the others were average in comparison. When I go back I will build my own "dinner for two" around that dish and try a few other mains. Oh, the butter naan was perfect, just the right combination of crispy outside and fluffy inside...yum! Our last night in Montreal, we decided to dine at this restaurant. We had already eaten at 'Darbar', where the food was outstanding. So we were hoping for similar food experience at Gandhi. We didn't make any reservation and arrived around 6:30ish on a Tuesday evening. The restaurant was empty and we were seated promptly. We were given a papad each until we decided what to order. We ordered the following: - Chana with Poori (Chickpea with fried bread): This was ok, nothing spectacular. The chickpea was not boiled properly and wasn't cooked properly with the spices and flavor. When I had the chickpea on its own, it was bland. I had to mix it with the curry. That is not how chickpeas should be. The chickpea should be soft. The curry was super oily, and my fingers were drenched in oil after I finished my meal. The Poori was ok, nothing too great. - My husband ordered a chicken curry, and he felt that the chicken wasn't tender either. We are Indians and obviously know what good Indian food tastes like. I would choose 'Darbar' over 'Gandhi' any day. I had ordered the same dish at Darbar, and the chickpeas were super soft and flavorful. We both left the restaurant feeling somewhat unsatisfied. Ghandi has been around since 2001 but in the last year the manager bought it over. We made reservations via ooentable for Saturday and they kindly gave us a window as per requested. It was very busy on Saturday night and service was super slow. We started with vegetarian samosas which were nice and soft and decent tasting. For our main meal we had the butter chicken which we found a tad too sweet, the eggplant was very good and a lamb curry which we asked for spicy but it was nothing but. They did provide free rice and the garlic naan was good. They didn't seem to have wine by the glass choices so I got a Beaujolais half bottle for $20 and that was fine. The place does have an haute class to it but service is super slow and you can get the same and even better meal elsewhere for half the price in other parts of town. read more

My bff swears that Gandhi is the best Indian food in North America, so this was our first meal stop when we got to Montreal. Despite the generic name, the food is excellent as was the service, and the restaurant is very pretty and bright. We were starving and ordered several dishes to share: chicken jalfreezi, chicken tikka masala (my favorite), plain naan, and samosas. We asked for spicy levels for the two chicken entrees, and unlike their American counterparts they did NOT disappoint with the spice levels. I also noticed that American chicken tikka masala has always seemed cream-based to me, but at Gandhi it was definitely onion-and-tomato-based. While I lovelovelove and am more accustomed to the creamy-rich deliciousness of chicken tikka masala in the States, Gandhi's was very delicious. I also liked the jalfreezi. The samosas were good and I loved drizzling their array of sauces on the deep-fried lovelies. The naan was a little too sweet for my preference, but the fluffy texture was wonderful. I don't know when I will be back in Montreal again but I would definitely make Gandhi a sure stop and highly recommend it to any local or tourist. read more

I was reaaally craving Indian cuisine when I was passing by this restaurant so I decided to give it a try. To say I am disappointed is to say the least. It was really confusing when we approached the place - it looked like it was closed. The waiters were passing by but we stood there for so long not sure if we can enter - we had to call them before entering. Normally I would have left but I was hungry so I stayed. They have a good menu - so many dishes to choose from, but honestly what's good in having so many different things if you can't do it properly. We had the lamb dish - they bring in a crispy bread with dips before serving the main food and the lamb came with a salad and rice. The meat was so dry and weirdly cooked - I've been to a lot of Indian restaurants and this is the first time I disliked it. In addition, the prices are unjustifiably high - I would expect these kind of prices somewhere more exquisite but this place is just ridiculous. Also, their service was mediocre. read more

Worst food experience ever. My sister and I were staying in Old Montreal and tried out this restaurant as we both love Indian food. We ordered some traditional dishes, samosas, Sag Paneer, and Baingan ka Bharta (eggplant). The samosas were good but the two entrees were the worst I have ever had. No flavor, no Indian heat or seasoning. The saffron basmati rice did not have saffron and was not basmati rice. In both dishes there was green and red peppers. The paneer was orange in color, not white. I thought this is just how they made their food. We didn't finish the food and the server never came over to ask how things were. After they cleared the table, they did not come back to offer anything else or the bill. We walked up to the little register stand and our waiter signaled he would bring the bill over, I said we would pay there. He asked how everything was and I said the food was not what I expected, it didn't taste like Indian food. He said, and I quote "Oh, when we see people like you we don't prepare the food with spice!" We are two Caucasian women, and this was extremely insulting. Needles to say this did not go over well with me and I made it very clear about the insult. The waiter keep trying to cover up his comment saying we didn't order the right dishes, pulling out the menu and pointing to dishes with heat indexes on them. This just added fuel to the fire. He was saying to come back and he will make sure the food would be good. My final comment was I would never come back to this restaurant if I return to Montreal. So, if you want to go, and are white, make sure you tell them you want REAL Indian food. Or better yet, go somewhere else. read more

I love Indian food, and this was the first time ,I tried this restaurant . The service is AAA, Decor and ambiance ,soft, elegant and welcoming staff, attentive, fast (it was to early for supper time, so it was not that busy) and informative. The owner is even hands on, and asks around if everything is fine to make sure, the clients are fully satisfied. Now talking about food, I have ordered few different choices , the presentation was great, however the flavour was missing, I assume, since many of the visitors are tourists in that area, they do not make the dishes really authentic Indian spicy or go gentle with all other spices in their cooking, but I am sure, next round, I can tell them how spicy I want the dish, and they will accommodate my wants. It's a great place to have hsuan food in the heart of Montreal. The food is real good, very much adapted to the non-Indian palate while still feeling fresh and flavorful for the Indian palate. It's got parking nearby which helps a lot and the servers are very kind. We got the keema naan (great! Made with fermented dough, light and fluffy), chicken kadhai - it was ok, slightly overlooked chicken, but just only slightly and it didn't take away the taste. The star was the mango chutney for me, which came along with the papad in the beginning of the meal and we made sure it stayed on the table for the rest of it as well. The shahi paneer was delicate and not op overpoweringly sweet or heavy. Gulab jamun wasn't true authentic, one could sense the French influence on the recipe, but it worked decently well read more

I've had better Indian food, especially for the price. But, they are in the old port of Montreal, someone has to pay for that rent! I've also had better service, the waiter was a real jack ass. The guy I went with did not leave a tip due to the poor service, and the waiter followed us into the street accosting him for a tip. One of the best Indian meals we've had yet! Perfect food, with great friendly service. I've eaten Indian food all my life and have realised that finding GREAT Indian restaurants can be a challenge. By recommendation of our waiter I ordered the Madras... and wow, it was nothing short of delicious with just the right amount of heat and absolutely bursting with flavour. The Chicken Saag was easily the best Saag we've had! Both were ordered with rice and Naan which accompanied our meals perfectly. At the end of the meal, our attentive waiter served hot towels for cleansing - nice touch. Pricing was totally reasonable for a top-quality restaurant such as this one.
