My plate! Butter chicken and naan

Have dined here pre-Covid and after finally feeling able to venture off again here we are in the wonderful city of Montreal! Night #1 brought us to Gandhi. We are full and happy. The service and food do not disappoint.

So we're strolling along the street and happen to go into a GP Boutique store during the Grand Prix weekend. When I asked if they had what I was looking for, the answer was 'no' so I asked the next logical question... 'where's good to eat around here?' Now that was something she could help me with! Out came the phone to google map the restaurant name... huh, a 20 minute walk from where we were? Let me tell you, it was with every step. I wish I could thank the young lady who suggested it to us because she was right, this place is fabulous! We opted for the Chicken Kashmiri and som Aloo Gobi. It would seem that we try Aloo Gobi at every Indian restaurant we go to and this was one of the best! The Chicken Kashmiri I could eat everyday for the rest of my life. Note to self: I want this to be my last meal! Must update Yelp profile info. The Papadum was really good and the three sauces/chutneys were incredible. I believe they were mint, tamarind and mango. Absolutely to die for!! Dear GP Boutique (on Saint Catherines Street) employee who recommended this restaurant to me... THANK YOU!!! You will never be forgotten.

    Dinner for two

Restaurant Ghandi makes me feel like I'm back in India without the crazy jet-lag! The decor is minimalist by Indian standards: white table cloths, white walls, some weathered wooden door panels on the wall and a few ferns. When we walked in there was a brigade of waiters dressed smartly in formal wear. We were greeted warmly and escorted to a great window table facing St. Paul. The inexpensive wine list was way better than average having multiple choices in that oh so sweet $65 price point. We ended up with a nice Sancerre that paired beautifully with the spicy dishes to come. Our waiter recommended one of the "dinner for two" options that had a nice salad and starter, followed by three mains and rice (paneer with peas, chicken with a light curry, and lamb with a coconut curry), followed by a dessert platter and tea. The lamb curry was by far the best dish, in fact the others were average in comparison. When I go back I will build my own "dinner for two" around that dish and try a few other mains. Oh, the butter naan was perfect, just the right combination of crispy outside and fluffy inside...yum! Service was attentive and friendly, in fact our waiter made a point of not rushing us through the meal. Ghandi was a good dining experience and we will definitely return.

We came across this restaurant while looking for REAL food in Montreal. The food was amazing and the service even better!! You can tell it is a clean, well run family business. We went twice in 2 days. This is a place worth trying. My son loved the Mango Lassi so much. Zafor took very good care of us .

After some time with the menu, and pitchers of water having been delivered to the table, the server came to take our orders, food and drinks together. The appetizers were delivered before most of the drinks, with one guest not receiving their appetizer until the mains were being delivered. The server had a bit of a hard time remembering who had what, but with some direction, everything was delivered eventually. The food was nice. We had the Lahori fried fish, nicely spiced, fish cooked really well. My partner and I shared the Combo 2 with white meat chicken kahari, beef kebab, and garlic naan. The chicken was cooked very well. The curry paste was tasty. The kahari was served in a large metal bowl, very nice touch. I really enjoyed the kebab as well. The naan was factory made, not fresh. That was a bit disappointing. My fraise rose was delicious. My partner had a mango lassi and said it was acceptable but a bit too thick. The meal had a good spice level throughout. The portions are generous and very filling. Good value for money, however the menu does not make it clear that most dishes seem to be intended for sharing. At the end of the meal, it took some time for dessert to come out (included with the meal), and it seems only some people were asked if they wanted tea or coffee, our side of the table was not. Towards the end, the server simply stood at the other end of the table and asked, generally, if anyone wants anything else. The service might have been better on a busier day, but at 1pm on a Sunday, it was lacking a bit, and we felt a little bit like an inconvenience, even though we were the only people there. We would go back, just maybe for an evening date.

I'd never had the French Canadian heart-attack-on-a-plate, and was a little nervous as it just looks like it has A LOT going on. I sludged into La Banquise dead sober at 4:11am, as this is a legendary spot that is open 24 hours. I sat down in a bustling no frills atmosphere and remembered my deep appreciation for a 24-hour diner. You see people for who they really are this early in the morning. A couple in front of me was in a heated argument about what "being exclusive" really meant, while two separate groups of 4 to my right were feeling no pain and enjoying a poutine night cap. There I was, sipping on my black coffee mentally prepping myself for the 45 mile (72 km) day I had in front of me. The dichotomy of life. I asked the server what the most popular item was, and he said La Scooby. This monstrosity consisted of fresh cut fries, cheese, gravy, ground beef, bacon, onions, fried pickles, and caesar dressing garlic sauce. I got the small ($12.40 usd), but this thing was a TANK. It was bigger than my head and I have a HUGE head. The large must be a family style portion or somethin. Upon first bite, it was damn good. I completely see the poutine appeal. Is it an ideal meal dead sober at 4:11am? No, absolutely not, but this is an S-tier hangover food. Also, if there is ever a day when I need some extra calories, it's on a 100k step day. All the staff was so welcoming, and surprisingly chipper this early in the morning. SHOUTOUT TO LA BANQUISE! THANK YOU FOR FUELING THE JOURNEY! IG @johnny.novo Tiktok @jnov__ Substack @johnnynovo

I took my niece from New York City here because La Banquise is supposed to be the "must try" poutine spot in Montreal. We had a great night overall: soccer game, drinks at Mellon Brasserie (none of us were drunk; my wife was 100% sober). Everything was fun and chill. But La Banquise completely ruined the end of that trip, and I'm not okay with letting this go. We paid for the food and service. But it doesn't matter if you pay $1 or $100: at the end of the day, we were customers, and we deserved to be treated with respect. We waited for our Uber outside. It was cold, and I'm on crutches, so my injuries hurt badly in the cold. After waiting outside for a long time with the Uber not showing up, we went back inside to wait near the door, in the corner, not blocking anyone. The staff at the door immediately came in and started rudely and aggressively kicking us out. He refused to speak English with me after I clearly said, "I don't speak French, so talk to me in English." He kept talking French and was rude to my wife, my niece, and me. He told the waitress in French that we were "blocking the way," which was 100% false. (My wife speaks French) We were just standing near the entrance, waiting for a few minutes, trying to get out of the cold. When I went to the cashier and explained, "This guy is kicking me out. I just paid for my meal. But it doesn't matter if you pay $1 or $100: you're still a customer, and you shouldn't be kicked out and treated like trash just because you're waiting for your Uber on crutches. I'm on crutches, it's cold, and my Uber isn't here yet," they called a waitress who also started telling us to leave instead of helping. She didn't try to find a solution; she just said, "No, no, leave, leave." This is not just bad service. This is disgusting, disrespectful treatment of a paying customer with a mobility issue. My niece, who had a blast all night, ended the trip saying, "What the f....? You bring me here and they treat us like this?" She now has a bad impression of Montreal because of this place. My niece is from New York City, and she's also posting her own review. That review will be seen by people in New York and by tourists looking for recommendations. If you treat tourists like this, you're not just ruining one night, you're ruining the image of the whole city. Montreal is supposed to be a welcoming city for tourists and people looking to have fun and be treated with respect. La Banquise failed that completely. The food was okay, but the experience was terrible because of how we were treated. This is unacceptable. You should be ashamed of how you handled this.

As I walked in this place, I was served by very friendly staff who promptly took my order. The service that night however was slow because they had to make the fries just for us. The wait for it was well worth though. I took "Le Farci" which is a burger with the beef patty stuffed with cheese; something that I've never tasted before. This patty topped with a great sauce and the crisp yet soft in the middle bun made it into a perfect burger. I also took a side of poutine, which was great as well. The fries were fresh and crispy, with just the right amount of sauce to melt that cheese. This place is definitely worth the trip if you are craving not only for a burger, but for good food!

Upon entering the restaurant, I'm instantly reminded of the late nights waiting at a halal cart in nyc after a night out. The staff members aren't the friendliest, but they get the job done LOL. You'll find a bunch of hungry and probably drunk people sitting at the cafeteria styled seats at night. The food is the main selling point here though. I've gotten the mixed platter and shawarma platter; both with generous servings of protein all doused in a flavorful sauce. Ordered the poutine recently and was also impressed how much they loaded the protein. It was a little on the saltier side and wished they had more cheese curds, but still pretty enjoyable. The fries were also more like small potato wedges. I've recommended this place countless times for almost any point of the day, but they especially hit the spot after a long night.
