We stayed at this charming hotel when visiting Pont Aven, during what was perhaps the last sunny…read moreweekend of the year, and frequented the restaurant no fewer than three times during our two-night visit--not counting breakfast. This wasn't for a lack of restaurants in the city of painters--it was because Les Mimosas was so damn delicious! I tried my first bigourneaux (periwinkles) here, lightly boiled in salt and pepper to exquisite tenderness and amusing to fish out with the tiny pin. For lunch one day I had clam pasta--they were sadly out of the pink clams, but the pasta tasted delicious all the same--and another the moules frites in curry sauce. It was copious and stained my fingers yellow, but so worth it. I even managed to finish the fries (chunky, crispy, and home-cooked). My family and I shared a stuffed clam appetizer, the memory of which still makes me salivate. Garlicky, lightly breaded, chewy but not too firm, these clams went down easily. And I even used the freshly-cut bread to mop up their oily sauce. We also "shared" an oyster platter, though I had trouble getting the others to enjoy more than just one. They'll like them one day, I'm sure of it. I wasn't always such a fan of shellfish myself! The patron served us himself, and both he and the bartender added to our enjoyment with their friendly banter (by the way, they make a mean gin and tonic!). At lunch on the third day, we hit the sweet spot and they had trouble keeping up with all the orders. No matter: we were content to wait longer with our drinks since we knew what was coming. It seemed that everyone else was happy to wait as well! Try to get a seat next to the windows if you can, or on the terrace if it's warm enough. A shellfish tower is best enjoyed with a premium view of the port. Maybe one day I'll get my in-laws interested in all the shellfish. Just maybe.
