See the menu here (only in german): http://www.national-burgdorf.ch/pdf/speisekarte.pdf It is situated about 10 walking minutes from the railway station. On warmer days you can sit outside on the patio, which is surrounded by green. It's not the quietest, because the roundabout is just some metres behind the hedge. Some places on the patio are under the open sky, some under a roof. The food is awesome! I already went there three times and ordered a cordon bleu every time. Take the big one (500gr.) even when you know in advance, you won't be able to eat the whole. The staff is happy to wrap it up in aluminum foil, so you can take it home. The difference to a smaller, even big, cordon bleu is 5-7 CHF, so it's up to you. I already had the Lothringer-Cordon bleu, the Saisonhit and the one with truffles and all of them tasted fantastic! The meat is best quality and CHF 34.- for half a kilogram is still a good price! The gratinée carrot-ginger soup as an appetizer was great. If you have some air left in your stomach after the cordon bleu, try the trilogy of desserts, which are varying from time to time. Enjoy your stay there and let me know if you took some of my recommendations and if you agree with me :-)

We ended up here by a stroke of luck --- the restaurant we were aiming for wasn't open for dinner…read moreyet, and after a round of overstuffed pitas at the Pittaria, I don't see how it could have compared. The owner is really the centerpiece of the place --- friendly, conversant in several languages, and happy to tell how he followed the girl of his dreams to Switzerland 30+ years ago. (The only other staff member we met has an annoying affinity for loud vacuum cleaners). Rolling in post-hike on a Saturday, the owner mentioned he was out of several fillings; in particular, the eggplant-and-peppers Betenjan that grabbed my eye first wasn't available. That turned out to be fine, as the standards he did have were excellent. Our group ended up with a mix of lamb Shish Kebab, veggie Falafel, and simple Hummus. All were heavily laden with extras --- veggies, lettuce, a sweet chutney that nicely complemented the main flavors, and hot sauce to order. The hummus and falafel options are variations on a theme --- either a large scoop of hummus and two falafel balls, or 6+ falafel balls and a small dollop of hummus. The lamb in the shish kebab is in large, tender chunks, and nicely roasted. The bread is much more substantial than many pitas --- more of a crusty roll, but so filled with goodies that the ratios are still right. Drinks are fairly standard --- a few beers and sodas, boxed Ayran yogurt drink, and a giant urn of oddly spiced tea by the glass. Definitely a must-eat for a day around Solothurn.

Restaurant Engelberg - Sauerbraten, meat tough as leather!

Sauerbraten was tough as leather, as if the sauce was just poured on top. Traditional sauerbraten…read moreis beef that has been marinated for several days in a vinegar‑wine mixture and then slowly braised in that same liquid until very tender, so it almost falls apart. In this restaurant the only infusion time between the meat and the sauce occurred when the chef poured that sauce over the meat in the kitchen and that plate arrived at my table. I've had more authentic sauerbraten in Queens, NY, than this restaurant. I mean, I could make a pair of shoes with this version. The worst part? Noah came to $74 USD... one glass of wine, one leatherbraten dish.

We first stopped by this restaurant for lunch and were absolutely blown away at how good the Wiener…read moreschnitzel was, with a delicate, crisp crust and ultra tender pork inside (for lunch it's actually Schweineschnitizel). The accompanying pommes-frites were also wonderful. A few nights later we went there for dinner so my wife could get the incredible schnitzel and I ordered Walliser-style Rösti (with tomato and cheese melted on top). I like crispy Rösti, but in this case the potatoes were cooked to an ultra-crispy texture, making it a tasty, crunchy delight. Truly superb food served by a courteous, friendly and efficient staff. This restaurant was truly a culinary highlight of our visit to Engelberg.
