On March 25th, I called again and cancelled my subscription and the Courier made me wait on hold for more than one hour while they cancelled my subscription and worked on my credit that they acknowledged I was due. One of the reasons I love Philly is that it's very active in the literary world. Between it's…read moreincredible Libraries, and it's amazing assortment of bookstores we're kept pretty up to date with whats going on in the reading world. But despite this it's hard to get a feel of who's who when it comes to our local writers. That's why it's great that a free magazine like Philadelphia Stories exists and is widely available throughout many coffee shops, etc. Philadelphia Stories is a quarterly magazine that showcases the fiction and poetry of many writers from our area. Each issue has at least 9 good reads to go through, a local author profile, and some reading suggestions. It also gives writers and artists the chance to readily submit their work. So you might be able to dust off that great American novel idea and send out a chapter. Going to their website also clues you in on some fun literary events that are going on throughout the city. And you can get some insight on some of the books that they put out too. Start reading!

Rittenhouse Magazine can be a solid read for something small that only fluctuates around that area…read more it does have its lame moments (so called fashion shots of what people are wearing in the park). And it's more fluff piece oriented than news worthy for that area. you won't read anything insightful about musicians not being allowed to play in the park, but you will see plenty pictures of the many dogs that walk through it. But it does a good job of of covering interesting things from around that area every now and again that make it worth reading every now and again. My friend Taryn did a fun piece about how Philadelphia has one of the largest organized Pug meetups that happen in any city. they had an alright piece about some of the young business owners from that area, like the owner of Naked Chocolate and of course it does a good a job of capturing some of Rittenhouse's more picturesque nostalgia, like the fully lit Christmas tree. so It's not bad for a free read.

Amorosi's Ice Pack and other columns have been significantly cut down in size. But the biggest blasphemy of all is the fact that it no longer carries any of the awesomely hilarious comics that it used to have like Red Meat. At least it still has the "I Love You, I Hate You" section (which is generally nothing but a crapload of hate). But honestly, if I really wanted to get my fix of rants and raves from Philadelphia hooligans I'd sooner poke around on Craigslist. It was the better of the two for entertainment write ups, but now it's about equal with PW. I hate to say it, but City Paper is seriously slipping.

Wonka vision is the OG of Philly music zines and it's…read moredefinitely the most widespread. 11 years ago it was a black and white newspaper print that had The Descendents on the cover. and now its sporting Tegan and Sara on the cover in all of its full glossy glory. It definitely came a long way! When it comes to music Wonka Vision covers a lot of ground. If you skim through on the surface you'll primarily come across a lot of hardcore and punk rock (they definitely like Converge and Operation Ivy as much as I do) but if you actually read through you'll come across plenty of hip hop, rock, and fun bands like Polysics. and when they decide to take a break on music they decide to do random features on the likes of Todd McFarlane and Homestar Runner. and through it all they still find time to give it up for the locals. Wonka Vision is also about sweet deals and coolness. They hook up they're subscribers with bad ass record label exclusives (sometimes they even hook up graphic novel exclusives). and on top of all that Wonka Vision is a record label that features the likes of Philly's own Zolof The Rock & Roll Destroyer. Hot damn!

Overall I feel that Philadelphia Weekly is far superior to City Paper when it comes to our weekly…read morepapers. I love both, I know plenty of people who have been involved with both, and both definitely have their strong points and imperfections. But when it comes down to it, City Paper is something that I tend to flip through, whereas I actually tend to stop and read a lot more things in PW. it really knows how to draw you in. I also feel that PW does a better job of sponsoring events. They were one of the major backers for this things like Popped Fest and realizePhiladelphia. and you can't go wrong with what they've done with Rittenhouse Square's Concerts in The Park series over the past few years. City Paper does have the better entertainment section by far though.

First of all, CityPaper has This Modern World. As much as I love Savage Love, my vote for "Best Syndicated Feature in a Free Philadelphia Weekly Paper" definitely goes to This Modern World. Every time I wish I had lower taxes or start having doubts about the Democrats' vision of healthcare reform, Tom Tomorrow is there to violently return my political leanings to the left. Sure, it's not for everyone, but if you're the type of person who can enjoy a publication full of tranny ads, you can probably laugh at This Modern World. (And although I realize I'm pulling a bit of a "but I have a lot of black friends!" here, I'd like to point out that I have several Republican friends who love This Modern World... Well, they're really Libertarians, but they vote Republican.) And honestly, This Modern World is the perfect comic for CityPaper. CityPaper is unabashed about what it is, while I feel that Philadelphia Weekly frequently pulls its punches. I like PW's music reviews and events descriptions a lot, and I'm the first to admit that CP's movie haikus used to be far, far funnier than they are today, but in the end CityPaper feels like it sold out than Philadelphia Weekly. Adamma, Anastasia and Nina (I don't know who's really in charge) need to let their writers do their thing. To conclude, I'll take a page from John H.: CityPaper is Letterman, Philadelphia Weekly is Leno. If your grandparents were going to read a publication full of tranny ads, they'd choose Philadelphia Weekly. In my 11:35 time slot, I'm gonna go with CityPaper.
