I've been here more times than I can count on my two hands. There have been dissertation dinners, cocktail evenings, student get-togethers, dinners in the brasserie with friends and some exclusive business dinners with research colleagues. And over the number of years I've been here, there's been highs as well as lows. But they do most of the time maintain a more than acceptable middle-ground.
Located in the old Town Hall of Umeå that is a building with two front entrances. "Huh?", you're thinking. But yes it's true. When it was built in 1896 (after a devastating fire that more or less leveled the entire town) the King of Sweden were to come and inaugurate the new Town Hall, but they didn't know from which side he'd come so they built two front entrances. Nowadays, this house holds a restaurant (the brasserie), a cocktail- and winebar as well as an upstairs banquet hall. It still has a lot of the old interior decoration with dark wood, leather benches and chairs, and any renovations done to the place always pays great respect to it's history. That is the perfect way to make something old and genuine still feel fresh, vibrant and alive (take a hint Piteå Grand Hotel!).
Something I have always appreciated about Rex Bar & Grill is their skill with cocktails. The bartenders and mixologists are really skillful with flavors and combinations, and I can't remember a single time I've had a cocktail here that wasn't up to scratch. And for a number of years, my go to cocktail (and number one fav) is a Gin Fizz. This has turned out to be a great divider on cocktail skill as some people truly slaughters this classic drink. Rex has nailed it every single time. In more recent years they opened their wine bar, and this was a great addition to an already impressive bar.
The food has, for the most part, not been as exciting as the drinks. Sure it's mostly well-cooked, well-prepared and well-presented although they have unfortunately messed up my ordered meat-temperatures more than once. I just lack that bit of extra flare in exciting flavor combinations and presentation. But I must say, one time they made the best morel sauce I've ever had the pleasure of tasting!
It's a solid restaurant with good food, don't get me wrong. Although for the amount of money you spend for a dinner, there's that itch in the back of your head that it just wasn't entirely worth it. And no cocktails in the world can make that feeling go away. read more
