I don't know if you can call this a hidden gem anymore, but the food at Reyes really slaps. I've gotten tamales, tortas, and chips+salsa from them before. The tamales were good, especially for new york but I wouldn't say they were life changing. The torta however... I tried the lengua torta and it was amazing. The flavors were perfectly balanced and it really hit the spot. The salsas are also so good, especially the red salsa. You can also ask them for fresh made tortilla chips to pair. Excellent Mexican food hidden away in an unassuming deli. You'd never know it was here, unless someone told you about it... The tacos are delicious but very salty. Better than some of the local taco trucks - more flavor and less filler. The deli has a good selection of Mexican groceries; it also has a large Asian soup section. They charge extra for hot water - think this is for the lunch crowd seeking a cheap quick meal to go. Hands down the best carnitas tacos in all of NYC. Tacos come with onions and cilantro. Be sure to ask for the Mexican crema on the side. Delicious, fast, homemade Mexican food- hits the spot whenever I need an easy meal! We're very lucky to have Reyes close by - we call ahead whenever we don't feel like cooking and food is ready in about 15 minutes. They're also open to customizing, which I really appreciate. I order the vegetarian burrito, sometimes remove the cheese and sour cream, and I add sautéed peppers and onions since it doesn't have many veggies in it. The lovely sales lady said to get a costena burrito which was a fully loaded burrito. I asked for extra cilantro and onions. It came with a crema and 2 different hot sauce which mixed together went well with the burrito n chips. Well made and didn't fall apart while eating because it was lightly toasted on the outside. I feel very fortunate to live within walking distance to Reyes. Being from CA, I crave that unquestionable Mexican flavor. This is it! It is definitely the cheapest place around South Slope to get tacos but if it's not good, even if it was free it's not good. I've been in this neighborhood and eating there now over ten years, and Reyes has always been a wonderful, clean, and lively spot for the same kind of authentic tacos that I grew up on in southern California and on trips to Baja. You can tell they're a hard working family business that values their customers. I think their strength is their tacos (al pastor, pollo, and asada in particular. Veggie great too, almost like a quesadilla.). But they do everything nicely - tortas, burritos, quesadillas, real good tamales on weekends. Even basic American stuff on the grill like burgers, breakfast things, fries. Been meaning to try out Reyes for years now, and finally had an excuse to be in South Slope. As others have mentioned, you order tacos at the front, and then in the middle, there's a few seats and a counter. Their deal is two tacos for $5.50, which is a great deal. I went with the chicken tinga and the carnitas. The tinga was the better of the two. Double wrapped, as is traditional. I found the tortillas a bit thick for my liking though. South Slope is a battleground when it comes to Mexican food, but Reyes holds its own against the competition (and it has plenty). I don't come here often, but when I do, it's usually after a strenuous workout at Harbor Fitness across the street. It's a multi-step process: I finish my workout, do some myofascial release and stretching, and call up Reyes to place an order for an Azteca burrito with chicken/beef (depending on what I'm in the mood for). If it's been a lighter workout but I'm still Jonesing for Mexican food, then tacos it is (a combination of their beef and al pastor). Both valid options. "10-15 minutes," says the person on the other end of the line. I nod in agreement and proceed to the next phase of my post-workout ritual: contrast shower, followed by a hot sauna session. By the time I come out of there, I'm a new man. I'm physically worn down but mellowed out and in a somewhat zen-like state. My muscles are starving for nutrients. I grab my stuff and walk across the street. There it is, my Azteca burrito, fresh off the grill and wrapped in a warm flour tortilla. It is one of the fattest burritos I've ever eaten--chode-like in its dimensions. I savor every bite, alternating between the green and red salsas for maximum diversity and flavor. 10 minutes later, the burrito is finished, and so am I. If I did this every time after I worked out, I'd probably be better off not having a gym membership at all. But after a long day and a hard workout, sometimes what you need is a big burrito from the bodega across the street. Carpe diem. read more

It's really just a little unassuming Bodega, rather than a restaurant. Stop by here and try them. Last time I was here was early 2015 on one of my NYC food tours. I've been on like 10 of them and these are some of the best tacos I've found in the city. Make sure you get both types of salsa with your tacos so you can make them nice and moist (that's the way I like it). If you prefer yours dry then ignore me. NYC tacos aren't necessarily the best in the world on average, but these babies stand up to the good ones in other parts of the country. Obviously the owners were Reyesed right. There are four little bar stools in the back, should you want to sit and eat. But these face an orange formica wall. At least give us a bad TV with a Mexican soap opera blaring. In other words, it has almost zero charm. The tacos aren't exactly big or heavily garnished (which might be looked at as good or bad). For Sunset Park adjacent, I thought they were a tad skinny. That said, the meat was delish - especially the carnitas. Also, their hot salsa was kicking. The workers are also really nice. For me, this is kind of like a good pizza slice place that delivers a solid product. You wouldn't go too far out of your way to eat there, nor is it anyplace special or unique enough to drag someone there for a big meal. But it fits the bill should you be nearby. Not every place has to be a home run. Being able to get consistent base hit is just as valuable. This deli carries all the staple items which a regular deli carries. My review is solely based on the different sandwiches which we ate here. When we entered the deli there were no customers except me and my friends. We ordered sandwich with turkey, tuna salad and with roast beef. The guy behind the counter gave me an attitude that it would take them some time make these sandwiches specially the tuna salad since they were very busy. I don't how they were busy with no customers inside the store except us, I guess may be they had some deliveries lined up. After waiting for fifteen minutes, finally our sandwiches were ready. I was happily surprised to find not only did they have burritos, but they also serve carne asada. As an L.A. boy forever searching for carne asadain New York, this was a RARE discovery. Went for the Azteca burrito (beans, rice, avocado, pico de gallo) with carne asada. It did not disappoint. The grill dude cooked the meat to order and presented a pillow like burrito. No steaming of the flour tortilla (that's crap only Chipotle does), everything right of the grill. Taste was on point. I came to Reyes when it was late at night and I had a Mexican food craving. The burritos are very good. The chef is from Mexico and they deliver authentic Mexican flavor. It is also a grocery store where they sell everything from Ice cream to milk to cat food. Is it the best burrito Ive ever had ? No. Is it a good burrito if you're craving Mexican ? Yes.
