He poked a bit of fun at the dire tone of the passage from Luke but reminded us life's like that. Highs and lows are meted out to all. Got there just as mass started and a kind parishioner made room for 2 on her crowded aisle. U get ur own personal kneeler for one. It was not the most ornate Catholic Church I have seen but it was welcoming. I'll take that. I'm a hoe for free (chocolate!) donuts and coffee and they were available to encourage mixing and Christian fellowship post mass. We hung with a young couple studying math and fraud accounting. They were unusually chatty and friendly representatives of their demographic. Gives me hope! My friend was delighted to learn the young man was from Alexandria near her hometown. They, like many of their Catholic brethren, have taken to "borrowing" beloved Protestant hymns. Ironic that I am now most likely to encounter a traditional Protestant hymn in a non Protestant church!

Originally founded in 1792 as Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, it experienced a name change as English became the "official" language when Louisiana joined the union in 1812. This current structure is the Parish's third and construction began in 1853. The marker out front gives more history. "Build in 1853 to 1856 on the site of two earlier churches. The first erected about 1790 under Spanish rule was called 'Our Lady of Sorrows.' The first marriage recorded was that of Don Antionio Gras, an early Spanish resident who donated the land. This Gothic Revival church with is 1891 steeple was extensively remodeled in 1921-1924 and again in 1966. There are meters for street parking but they are apparently not enforced on weekends. I went to the Feast of the Assumption Mass and boy, was it amazing! I heard choral and chant music…read morethinking it was a recording, and I look up at the choir loft and there's a women's choir! The liturgy and music were glorious for that Marian feast day! I enjoyed their Mass setting the organist and choir used as well, and their rendition of Hail Holy Queen Enthroned Above was awesome! I'm glad I went to this Mass! We need more choirs and organ like this!
