We walked in and was immediately greeted by the lady in the gift shop. She asked where we were from and if we would sign their book which we gladly did. I like to send post cards with a stamp home from my travels as a cheap souvenir and this place has some of the cheapest yet beautiful post cards I've come across. Donna did ask for a donation which we gladly provided and she was helpful in making sure that my stamp came out nicely. Donna suggested we walk to the other side where we met Larry and the man is full of knowledge. He gave us history about the area, about the ships being made and even how women played a big part during the war (welding Wendy). We asked questions about places we should go see while we are here and places to eat not surrounded by tourist. If you are in the area, you should take a few minutes and drop in, talk to the locals and learn something from their perspective that you may find handy.

It was the building itself that led me to look closer, located in a beautiful two story, restored brick house, only the bottom floor of which is open to the public. The small museum is self guided although they do have volunteer tour guides that will show you around if they're on duty. There's no way to plan a trip around the volunteers, but if you happen to see one, ASK QUESTIONS! It makes the experience 100% better and personally, I learned a great deal more with the guide. Through the museum you will learn that Bug Light Park and Cushing's Point were build up from the sea during World War II to mass produce war ships [the majority of which were worked on by women--FEMALE power!]. They have some fascinating before and after photos of the park [before just the ocean!] as well as unique tid-bits about historical sites around Portland. They've added articles based on questions and patron feedback. Make sure you ask about the Fort that can be seen across when looking to the right of the lighthouse! They also have a small gift shop in the museum, although it's mostly souvenir type items. Stepping into Cushing's Point Museum made my trip to Bug Light Park not only scenically beautiful, but gave it a well-rounded historic view as well. Take 15-20 minutes and check out this museum when you're in the area!

It's the kind of neighborhood bookshop that feels magical. Like, don't come here looking for a particular book; let the right book come to you when you're perusing. You'll know it when you see it. Or, okay, come here for something specific; it seems like the staff is more than accommodating if you need to special order something they don't have. I also watched them help a customer wrap something that was a gift, not mind at all that someone was just sitting on the floor reading, and welcome every single person who walked in the door. Everyone was so kind and inviting. We were giving a little history lesson, and spoke about a few more things, then sent on our way to explore and read each exhibit. Both upstairs and downstairs there is a lot of information to digest. Everything was dry well put together. While this is free, there is a donation box available.

Located in the Elizabeth Reed house, a beautiful old Victorian built in 1874, the museum contains multitude of interesting items. The numerous large rooms have period furniture, lovely paintings, old clothes, thousands and thousands of photographs, original newspapers, books and great old maps. There is a place to research genealogy records and even an orignal Fresnel Lens from a now extinct lighthouse from the area. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and even though we were visiting in a frigid part of January, seemed to enjoy our company and made us feel comfortable. The society also gives various lectures and programs during different times of the year. The historical Society and museum is a fantastic place to visit to learn anything you could possible what to know about the region.

All of them will offer a great variety of classics and new and popular books available. They also all have a great amount of books that are on sale and you can find some great deals on books. A section worth looking through no matter the location. The best thing about this particular location is the fact they aren't crammed space wise and even if it were busy I wouldn't have felt claustrophobic. That positive does make it a better location than a few of the others. Although I do believe this one kinda falls a little short being uninspired and lacking a great charm to it. The staff we interacted with were friendly but it only occurred when checking out. It's a solid location and worth visiting just not our favorite Sherman's. Like all the other locations they have far more than books and lots of items everyone will like!
