Wonderful hole-in-the-wall spot. We needed a quick bite for dinner on our way to New Orleans and found this gem. We were a little skeptical when first walking in, but we're greeted by two friendly ladies in the front. We shared 1 lb. of boudin and the crawfish tails & etouffee combo. Both were fantastic! This may not have been my first choice, but it was close to my client's site and they picked where to grab a late lunch one weekday. They offer plate lunches during the week, and I picked the steak and sausage plate with potato salad and cole slaw. For someone who isn't from southwest louisiana, I determined that steak and sausage actually means smothered sirloin pot roast and smoked sausage over white rice. You choose two sides, and even though fries are listed as a side item, for lunch, you can only choose between split peas, potato salad, cold slaw, or an additional portion of rice. This plate was interesting to me since it was half cajun food as the entree, but traditional american for the sides. No cajun sides offered here. On my plate, since it was near the end of the lunch service, I had mostly pot roast and just 2 small pieces of sliced sausage. The sausage was my favorite part of the plate as it turned out. My client ordered the rice and gravy plate which turns out, for all the non-louisiana folks, to be sliced sausage link smothered over rice. Another interesting thing they do is write the number of available plate lunches they can serve (toward the end of the lunch service) on the dry erase board, which is very helpful. Sometimes, you just gotta have some real Cajun food, without going to a lot of trouble to get it and without spending a lot of money. If you're way in the southwest corner, then Richard's will work. It did for us. I found a listing for Richard's in a book about where to have real Cajun food, suggested it to my hunny for our trip into SWLA, and there we were. It was a while ago, I don't remember what I had, but I remember that it was good. As usual, I finished up what my wife couldn't, I think she had non-spicy boudin. It felt real, too. Now, I'm fine with the gussied-up atmosphere of Prejeans, don't get me wrong. But you get a place like this that puts its profits more into the grub than into the frou-frou. It looks like a place where the locals go, a hangout place for friends, and me not being a local, I'd rather go to *that* kind of place than a tourist trap. Especially SWLA, I was listening for anyone speaking French or telling a Boudreaux joke (didn't hear anyone). I was in the mood for some boudin, so me and my four year old stopped here on the way to visit family in the area. He ordered the kids chicken strip dinner and I got a few pounds of boudin to share when I got where I was going. The boudin was pretty smooth, which is to say there wasn't any real chunks of meat enclosed, just lots of wonderfully pulverized pieces of meat with plenty of ricey goodness and small bits of green onion throughout. Overall, the boudin was pretty good if you enjoy a meatier boudin. It is about half meat and half rice in my amateur opinion. The casing was moist and not easily breached. Had a nice flavor with a spiciness that crept up on you while eating, but never overpowered the taste to become too hot. The price is fair with comparable boudin joints I've been to. The chicken strip dinner was surprisingly very good. I half expected something bought frozen or prepared in advance. What he was served was fresh chicken breast, cut into strips, breaded and fried. 2nd place to Raising Canes as far as the strips go. The fries were standard fair that is served almost everywhere. Located on Highway 90, which is also called Napoleon Street through Sulphur, Richards Seafood & Boudin Mart is exactly as the name implies. They have a long cold glass case with shrimp, catfish, boudin and sometimes gator meat. Definitely has a "locals eat here" feel. Very nice people behind the counter and the order was fairly quick to come up. I hear the crawfish etouffee is pretty good. May have to make another trip to try a po-boy also. In my opinion, this place is between 3 and 4 stars with a 3.5. I just will end up with a 3 star rating because of the location and ambiance. read more

First of all, I called in a order at around 7:00pm and the lady on the phone literally yelled at the cook asking if the grill was still up, said they could still do it..questionable already since it's supposed to close at 8:30. I got a combo of shrimp and fish with fried and boudin balls and fried alligator bites which (according to the menu) should cost about 22-24$. Went to pick it up at around 7:20 and the lady was literally already cleaning up and looked relieved when I said it was a pickup. Total was around 28$ at the counter, didn't say anything since I just figured the prices went up since the menu was posted online. Lady literally locked the door when I got into my car and turned off the open sign. Food was aight but I didn't even get a salad (as the menu said I would) and they forgot my boudin balls. Alligator bites were not worth it for the price. All in all, ass establishment don't go here all your gonna do is get overcharged and they'll give u low effort garbage food and probably forget some things. Also they should at least change the times on the door if they'll close an hour earlier than it says. read more

Originally being from Detroit I had to be taught that the name was pronounced "Rishard's", not Richard's. It's super dumpy inside, really old and bordering on dirty. The food is all fried except for the gumbo's and etouffee's and frankly, I thought everything was terrible, the boudin balls, the catfish and the pistolettes. Not a good time. First time at this site and stood in the doorway waiting for some kind of direction. Do we sit ourselves or do we wait to be seated. After 10 mins of waiters and staff looking at us we decided to seat ourselves. This may have been the right move. Not sure. Got or tap water drinks and proceeded to order 7 pounds of crawfish and fried mushrooms. Mushrooms were very tasty and really enjoyed them. The crawfish on the other hand were mediocre, and thats being generous. Half my crawfish were mushy and dead before they were boiled. Oddly about a dozen of the crawfish tasted like diesel fuel and were not edible. When I told the staff I was told sorry with no solution.
