As a positive, I would like to mention that one of my (South Asian) friends who is a clean freak pointed me to this place and drove me there. Ever since, Asian Meat Mart has become my singular choice destination for mutton. At £10/kg, this is cheaper than the occasional goat meat availability in Borough Market (£13/kg), but more expensive than the Bangladeshi meat stores in Shadwell and Brick Lane (£6-7/kg), but of course you're paying for the high quality of service and handling, in addition to the infrastructure that this place offers. Among negatives, this place is not too easily accessible by public transportation, unless there is a bus that I'm not aware of.

They did not have any pies that were ready to eat, but I did try a sausage roll and the pastry was absolutely flakily and mouth meltingly amazing. Personally I'd like a bit more spice in my sausage, but I am in London after all and it was a good sausage. They had a variety of pies to take home to be baked, but I didn't want to carry them all over the gardens and unfortunately this shop closes at 6 (gardens close at 6:30) so I couldn't pick them up on my way back either. I also think Butchers play an important role and its so much better to see the meat your eating like this than as the plastic, packaged, processed stuff in supermarkets. Pethers is such a wonderful butchers selling not just free range meat and poultry but also a selection of fine cheeses, pickles and hot sauce. The meat all looks such good quality and the smell is even appealing! (I've walked passed so many butchers in the city with stinking ill looking carcasses that it is so refreshing to find a quality place). More over, this year Pethers joined a green movement with other shops in Kew to become more ethically sound and has stopped using, or giving out plastic bags. So for the conscientious and fine meat loving carnivore this is a great place to go.

The producers are all relatively local, many are organic, and all are happy to discuss their means of production with you (which is the main attraction of buying locally, I think). You can often get some decent fish, some excellent pies, some nice sausages (they grill some up to sell on a bun, too, if you skipped breakfast), and several good cheeses. Of course there are also breads and plenty of veg too. Roughly 10 to 12 stalls in all, probably, and they vary a bit from week to week. Edit: 10-May-08. Just back, and this market's better than ever. Did my weekly shop. Eggs, fresh bread, lamp chops, lettuce, tomatoes, venison sausages, and takeaway pork and stuffing sandwiches for lunch. Bumped the stars from 3 to 4.
