The entrance and gift shop are just off one of the town parking lots and a short walk from the main lot. It isn't a huge site but it is nice to visit. You can actually walk inside the remnants of the castle. There are both an audio tour and a guide book available. If you are up for a walk, there is a scenic walk from Helmsley Castle to Rievaulx Abbey. The abbey is definitely worth a visit, whether you walk or drive. I reccomend both.

Approximately in the middle, so quite a long walk is needed to get there however there are spaces for those not as mobile as others. You take a trip in here and go back intime to the days of Captain cook when he was on his ship. You can see the cramped conditions which the crew had to live in. The museum gives an insight into his life. .Further up the road in Great Ayton is Captain cooks schoolroom museum. Captain cook was born in the grounds of Stewarts park and this is an ideal location for this museum.

There is also a sad little meerkat there all alone who should be helped by the RSPCA really. He has a little pot belly. The museum is not as good as it was, all the serious exhibitions seem to have been dispersed. i remember one room that used to be full of snuff boxes that has completely disappeared. The smithys seems to have closed as well, but there is a toy making workshop where old carpenters have to deal with kids questions ha! There is also a man dressed as an old time policeman who is a bit embarrassing if you're over ten. The old street of shops is very good value, and there are a couple of new ones as well. But they've got rid of the taxidermists. Boo! If I understand my ticket correctly, it is valid for a full year from purchase. Eh? Best time to go: When there's some big event on, the grounds are huge, and you can look at classic cars then explore the woods and get the ferry to Yarm for a good meal. It was an old rich man's house, and the front is really the back.

This is interesting, but really it's a bit dry for the children and not as much fun as it could be. Out at the back they have an old fashioned street with old shops and some of them you can actually watch people working in them. Sadly, though, these shops are nearly always closed, at least they have been when I've gone there. The museum is set in its own grounds, and this is where the locals really make the most of it. There is a large area of grass which people use for kite flying, football, picnics, etc. There are also a couple of little play grounds for different aged children, there's a little crazy golf course, a cafe, and Butterfly World. They have lots of activities on, usually through the summer. Quite often they have craft fairs inside the museum. This really is worth a visit, but I do feel they could make it so much better than it is.

We visited to see the Yves Saint Laurent exhibition, he's my favorite designer and we're a big SL household - however, I was upset to find how poorly curated it was and how crowded the space was also. There was little fluidity in the way in which the clothing had been displayed, in one room pieces were even mixed in with the museums permanent collection - which proved confusing to those who weren't very aware of the brand. The museum architecture is beautiful, without a doubt, but each room just seems to have bits and pieces crammed into it. One room for china - pots and plates collected by the family, silver - more dishes and spoons, the portraits are beautiful to admire for the artistry but again, covering the walls of two rooms lacking in atmosphere. Even the entrance hall which was once open, airy and home to the famous silver swan has been downsized for a tacky gift shop and huge entrance ticket desk. They've ruined a once magical place. It's so out of date and dull, not to mention absolutely overpriced for what's actually there.

It's a great collection. Even more impressive is that the couple created the building with the sole purpose of showing these priceless pieces to the public. It's a good idea to watch the video (5 mins) in the viewing room before you browse the displays. The exhibition of gowns is lovely - particularly for people interested in the evolution of fashion. It's a nice visit. Although I didn't dine, the cafe looks really good too. The grounds are nice and the whole place has a lovely atmosphere.

There was not one moan from any of the children..(5, altogether,from 2 to 14)..they all seemed very happyand interested in the museum.Never got into the Owl sanctuary as it was closedand looked quite expensive anyway.But we all enjoyed the dayand look forward to going again.

The cafe and shop haves moved out of the main hall and are definitely worth a visit as in the hall itself. It tells the stories of the impact the family had around the world including founding the US state of Maryland. This year is the 400th anniversary of the building of the hall so I hope to be back.
