Probably half as many strength machines as Berkeley. There's no smith machine which is weird. Could use both a seated hamstring curl and incline press machine. The place isn't bad but lacks a few key machines. read more

Always enjoy coming to the Richmond YMCA great place to work out although it has changed significantly as the pool services are no longer available. Also, the bathrooms are not as inviting for showers after workout with the new set up. The staff are always very kind and helpful. We are still very happy to be members of the YMCA. It would be nice if they could do some renovations to the YMCA for those that are still members and like to enjoy the Richmond facility read more

They no longer have parking available to members for their busiest days/classes. They used to protect members' parking privileges with a 'members only' sign, but no more. They allow large number of the school (across the street) parents/drivers to fill up member spaces. There is no excuse for this. It was almost impossible to park for a morning class so I stopped going to the class. They have not given any response. I have brought this to their attention a few times. There is literally no upper management to contact for anything. I have been going to this Y since about 2002. It used to be great, esp the pools..all gone and we could always email/contact management with concerns/questions. I miss the classes and also a very active lively weight room..no more. Been a member of the YMCA since the age of 10 . I feel so incredibly sad for the people think that the Richmond Parkway YMCA is a " great gym " . No towels . No Pool . No Sauna . No Shower Curtains in the male locker room plus dirty old floors . How pleasant. Not mention they close earlier then all there facilities at 1PM on SUNDAY & 2PM SATURDAY . How is that even profitable. Last but not least there staff sucks besides one Latina girl and a Latino guy up at the front desk . I'm from Marin and normally don't go to this gym useless I really have cause it's really that bad...hygiene wise . Only wrote this review because the Asian lady there said I had to bring ID even I've been going to this time for a good amount of 2025 . Sorry but I won't be returning 2026 until things improve! read more

Great classes at the Richmond YMCA! I'm enjoying my workouts taught by knowledgeable instructors.

I used to absolutely love this Y, especially for summer camp. My daughter went every year for 4 years. Her last summer there was an absolute disaster. They were scheduled for a field trip. My partner at the time picked her up and got the flyer for the field trip and everything. I got here there at the appropriate time the next morning. In the afternoon, I picked her up and asked how the field trip was, to which she informed me that she didn't go, she got left behind. Needless to say I had a very heated conversation with the staff and the supervisor. The supervisor informed me that another group was going on the same field trip the next day and she could join that group. So, next day, she gets dropped off. I made sure she was escorted straight to the field trip group so there were no issues. When I went to pick her up in the afternoon, they said she wasn't back yet, I assumed from the field trip. NO! She got left behind AGAIN!! And this time the supervisor didn't even know she got left behind. There was zero accountability and a failed effort to easily fix a situation. I was disgusted and vehemently angry, to the point where my partner had to pull me back to the car because I was going to get all the way in someone's face and all I could see was red. I got a BS apology from the people in charge and I demanded a refund for the rest of the summer. My daughter never returned and was truly heartbroken that her summers were forever changed. I would highly caution you leaving your child in the care of the individuals that are hired here. I tell this story to everyone in an effort to make sure this doesn't happen to anybody else's child. Other than that, the facility itself is ok. But I'd look elsewhere. Other places have better hours, more equipment/amenities and are more affordable. read more

No more spin classes at this YMCA. After Covid they got rid of their bikes! End of an era...so sad! They also closed their indoor pool.

I joined hilltop y on 1990. It was a great family gym when I joined. Over the years it has gotten progressively worse. When I joined there were classes like tai chi, karate.... All those classes were gone before Covid. Admittedly some of yoga and spin classes were very good. The y closed the racquetball courts. Now the closed the pool. The y has turned in to an overpriced planet fitness. To top this off, the recent pool closure or the fact that the y was even opened was not communicated to me. read more

I want to be clear that I loved this YMCA for the first couple of years; the staff was very friendly and helpful, the place had a really great family vibe to it, and the diversity was refreshing. This Y was the place where my young daughter learned to swim, where we bonded and played the most freely and where I trained every day for open water swims. But it became increasingly clear that the pool was not a priority nor did they see the opportunity and function it provided to a sizable number of members. They kept restricting hours of use and making increasingly inconvenient to use the pool such as moving the family swim to 8-9PM when most kids were at least on their way to bed. The pool is the great equalizer because in the pool infants with their young parents can be bobbing near the elderly in a water walking class. People of all sizes and abilities feel welcome in the pool more readily than any other part of the Y and its in community where we thrive. Why no thought to all of those children or grand parents who literally have only the pool to use with their young children and people who are trying to get their weight managed and need the buoyancy of water or those who can't do anything other than water exercises because of arthritis or other medical conditions. It's been over a year and I still feel the phantom limb of my former routines there and feel mad that all of us who depended on the pool were hung out to dry. Even with any Covid restriction taken out of the equation there simply are not many pool options in this part of the east bay that have full time hours and that are not chronically over crowded. I think the people who make the decisions for the Richmond Parkway made the mistake of sacrificing one population of users (many of which are undeserved) for the sake of outreach to another undeserved population. In my opinion they could have easily managed the pool better and even monetized it differently to bring in a lot more money which would have the benefit of completely funding itself. read more

I've lived in the area for 10 years and have two kids now. I love swimming and my kids are water babies, which is why I had my family membership at this location. Why does the Y have to close the pool to better serve the community? It's not a better service to the community. There's nowhere else to go for families to swim, so I've cancelled our family's membership. Disappointed in the new management decisions. What's the deal with the name change too, it doesn't help people find the facility, Richmond parkway is 10 miles long. Last note, there's plenty of members who would have paid additional for pool usage, management made some foolish decisions here in my opinion. read more

I've been a YMCA member for the last 15+ years across the east and west coast. This one is by far one of the better ones I've been to. Super clean, quiet, new and well maintained machines, and no one bothering me while I'm working out. The staff is super nice and is always friendly upon checking in. I hope they extend the hours to have it open earlier and available throughout the weekend. read more

I first walked into the door and I wasn't even greeted by the rude staff. I believe the staff members name was Yasmine she was sitting at the front desk didn't even say hi but continue to text on her phone. THAT WAS DAY 1! I went back a few weeks later me being a gym enthusiast and I noticed in the weight room that no one wipes down any of the equipment and the staff seem to not care. I did make a complaint and they said that they would "get right on it" but unfortunately no action was taken. I then brought my niece to join kids club I had heard parents talking about it and how great it was. Too bad it wasn't that at all I took my niece to get signed in for the first day and they denied her because she had flip flops on I can understand why this would be a safety issue but it was her first time and she really did want to play. The kids club staff didn't really seem to care about the kids they were on their phones when I first walked in I was greeted by a nice lady named Salwa. There was a girl with long blond hair who I heard cuss out loud in front of the children it startled me some so I took my niece and we did not go back until about a week later when I babysat her again. I was again greeted with phones in their face and fake smiles I went this time in the evening with my niece SHE HAD SHOES ON THIS TIME. But I was still denied( I believe her name was Yesenia) access because there was a "waiting list" I was told that a child was supposed to leave soon because they're half hour was almost up. Well none of them seem to know what time is I waited an hour and then it turned into 2 hours and it turned into 3 hours mind you there were only two people ahead of me they just seem like they don't care. So i left. I'm happy to say that I'm no longer a member at the gym and I will gladly stick with my 24 Hour Fitness. read more

The YMCA is a huge let down post COVID. They took this time to shorten the hours and close the pool. They plan on making the pool an expanded exercise venue. They have all the windows boarded up and claim they had to close the pool due to costs etc.... thats such a lie read more

I have been a member here for many years and through different shapes and sizes I have been I have always been comfortable here. The spinning, Zumba, and dance classes are very inclusive and lots of fun. The check in staff have always been friendly with me and told me changes to the schedule when I was looking for classes to do. Personal training here was great and I worked with Christine for a while and she was awesome concentrating on the whole package diet + exercise for fitness. She's high energy and I recommend her. Recently I had an injury so I have been restricted to aquatic work and recumbent bicycle only. But I still make it at least once a week to come in and go to the pool to even only walk in the water. Before this time I had never used the pool here. I am happy to say that the pool is excellent! It's not cold and other swimmers are pretty friendly. Hopefully soon I will pop in for a yoga class or 2 to see how that goes. read more

Ok first time here and got a free week pass. Place is spacious and very clean. Usual gym rush hours don't exist here. Never packed like 24 hour but then again not as much equipment either. Staff was friendly. They need music in those weight room for sure. It does not motivate you to put on work. One of the reasons I give this place a 3. It's so quiet. The patronage here is definitely different from 24. Sauna is unbelievably clean!!! I hated going to saunas at 24s cause it smelled funky and always crowded. This sauna was empty and spotless. I participated in Franklins cycling and weight class. Great workout and definitely challenging to say the least. However his teaching style is nothing like the instructors from 24. He's not interactive, lacks relationships with his students and never does the workout with you!!! For sure experienced better instructors than him when it comes to motivating and engaging the crowd. This is the other reason I give this place a 3. Overall, place is alright. Def gonna take advantage of my free week. read more

Very unfortunate that this facility no longer has a pool. The pool was one of the reasons why I visited this facility with my family almost every day to get exercise. Met lots of great people as well.. Unfortunately as they will not be re-opening the pool I'll need to cancel my membership and find another pool in the area which is hard. We're excited to reopen with a new name that better reflects the community we serve, and will help new members find us more easily. During our planning process to reopen Richmond Parkway YMCA, we've reimagined how we can better serve the community. We have exciting plans to open an early childhood center for low-income families, and we've reconfigured spaces to better support results-based fitness. Unfortunately, we've also had to make some tough decisions like not reopening the pool. As we shared with all of you prior to the pandemic, there are significant costs for essential pool repairs, and we are no longer able to offer this amenity at Richmond Parkway. This has been my #1 gym since I moved to the bay area. I love their classes and friendly staff. The environment is very comforting as well as welcoming as well. The people that go here mind their own business and I never get creepers that whistle and think they can get their groove on while at the gym. It's two stories with a seperate cardio room. It has a pool, basketball, wall ball area. Their classes are awesome and its affordable for a young professional!. read more

The group classes are not well managed and there are only one or two classes that fit what I want. The schedule changes without notice or isn't updated properly. There are some poor instructors that are full of themselves. The vibe here is that there are very easy senior classes or you can do whatever you want: come in late and interrupt the class! Bring your dog! The evening class offerings are scarce, so they often fill up early. Cleanliness of the facility needs work. read more

As a longtime member of the Hilltop YMCA, primarily interested in the pool for lap swimming, I want to register a complaint regarding the recent decision to close the pool at certain hours of the day across the entire week. This was the second time I've come to the gym to swim only to hit a locked door to the pool, dripping wet from the shower. As you can imagine, pool closures for swimmers are analogous to the entire gym being closed, randomly, to someone who just wants to work out. For decades swimmers have relied on the pool being open at all hours, the same hours as the rest of the gym. I realize this is a cost savings to the YMCA, but the hundreds of thousands of dollars of dues that are received in a month should more than accommodate the extra lifeguard costs of maybe $1,500 a month, tops, given the hours that you are closing the pool. I feel it's really an affront to the swimming membership of the gym and de-prioritizes the swimmers and unfairly biases the regular gym goers. Additionally, it strikes me as extremely unfair given the huge efforts and costs to renovate the rest of the gym. Please consider restoring services to the pool for the substantial number of people who come to the YMCA, primarily to swim. read more

Gisell J. is the Aquatics Coordinator here and she is incredibly AWESOME! The first time I called and left a message, she called me back right away with very detailed thorough information. There was some change occurring, but she was quick to email me with the updates. My toddler is enrolled in the swim class and she has been holding my hand along the way. You see her actively working during swim classes and you see her actively working behind the scenes as well. Gisell has been so sweet and genuinely caring, and it's no wonder she has such an important role here. Every question you have for her, she answers politely and honestly. I hope she remains here for as long as my son is enrolled here for swim because I am not sure what I would do without her support! Thank you for everything, Gisell! read more

They took advantage of the COVID closure to quietly and permanently close their beautiful pool, shutting out serious swimmers as well as the many children, disabled, and seniors who frequented it. That's a lot of discounted membership fees. I'm sure they'll learn to enjoy the expanded spin cycle and weight rooms. I don't think the management decisions have reflected the organization's mission and values for decades. read more

If you want to sign your kiddies up for private swim lessons don't waste your time waiting to hear back from the swim director.. I've been waiting over 3 months to get a schedule and still waiting... her excuses was she couldn't "find" anyone to meet my needs when I'm pretty much had my schedule wide open just for that.. she claims she will email me but never once I heard from her through email. Staff is very disrespectful and do not have manners. My little brother came with me (he's 6) and they said it was okay for him to come with me as long as he's around me but a few seconds later one of the staff members told me I couldn't while the one at the desk said it was fine but he cussed me out in front of my little brother and made a scene out of this and still kicked us out. I asked if I could pay to guest him in but he still gave us attitude and said no even though their guest policy says members over 18 can guest ppl in and I'm 27 but he wasn't having it. Staff was very rude to me a couple of minutes ago. I walked in, asked for a towel, and rude female front desk associate simply said "no." I asked again. Do you have towels. She said "no." So then I further probed- "do you not give out towels to members anymore or did you just run out?" She continued, "we don't have any." I asked again, "why don't you have any? Because you ran out or giving out towels to members is just not a thing anymore?" She replied "yes." WTF!! PS. If you've seen where some of the older men put those towels in the locker room, you'd probably need the towels nuked before they're actually ready for reuse. The last post saws you will never see certain things at this gym: some of which are incorrect. I understand this posting was in 2005, but since then, there ARE blowdryers, lotion, shampoos, & a steam room (sauna).. hmm. LOL Anyway, I enjoy going to this gym, I used to have a membership at the 24 Hr at hilltop however, I dreaded going there. There was always a wait for machines & it was a meat market in there. I am here to workout, not meet people. No offense to those who are, but I don't feel like being stalked at the gym! The Y has friendly staff & I like their FitLinxx machines, it keeps track of your workouts. The aerobic classes are pretty good.. There is a day care onsite also. read more

Blah-- I did the free week tour to get an idea about the place. PRO's: Friendly staff. Comfortable pool. With Bay Area membership you can use any other YMCA. Nice racquetball courts. They don't seem to do the hard sell. CON's: Locker rooms smell really bad. Too many kids. Older cardio equipment. No free towel service. Older place--needs a good cleaning. Did I say too many kids??? Thank God they have separate locker rooms for them. I have decided to hold off joining for now until I check out the Magic Johnson 24-Hour fitness center. Sadly there just isn't any good gyms over in the Richmond area-- (no Club One's). I certainly don't want to do the trek to Oakland or SF trip just to have a good place to workout. read more

One word for all of you, ZUMBA! Classes are taught by Telly and Norma. These fab women know how to make you sweat at the same time still have fun. I might probably regret the idea of posting this as there is a good chance I won't find an open spot in the class..bleh! YMCA management, if you are reading this, add some more classes puhleassee. It get's really crowded wah! Over all, I love going here. PS. Forget the YMCA swim lessons. The experience was horrible for my 5 year old. The private lessons were being cut short because the instructor had to go somehwere and 3 x's he was a no show. I requested a refund and got sidelined for 3 momnths. I canceled my memebership, now they write to me and call me and find out what happened. The Y is ok when your on your own but not when you join swimming from my experience. The YMCA HIlltop is thumbs down, join a real gym. read more

The Hilltop YMCA would have you believe that rather than just being a gym they are an integrated part of our neighborhood. More of a culture leader than a business. I'm here to tell you it's all true. I had to pause my membership for my whole family including 4 children because of some individual health issues that came out of nowhere. If this had gone badly I couldn't go anywhere else and replace this membership. No manager at any gym I've ever known would go above and beyond like these two ladies at Hilltop did for me. I realize that these policies are Bay Area wide and set up to favor the community, still I had to make this post to show that I'm abundantly grateful for the individuals watching out for us at Hilltop. Finally, I joined the Y here.. I really like that the YMCA is not like other meat-market type gyms. On the plus side, The majority of people who work at his Y are extraordinary friendly, polite and cheerful. The facility is kept quite clean. There is excellent programing and the variety of exercise equipment is commendable. On the other side...this place only lose two stars cause my reason for joining - childwatch- while I workout... Kids Club ,Summer / winter program ,and swimming class for kids is not that all great, the staffs in charge have lack of professionalism/instruction/coordination and knowledge. They need to do something positive special @ the Kids Club. The Zumba class is great!!! but it is always too crowded...no space to really do the Zumba =( I wish they could do something about it. read more

Really nice gym but unfortunately a lot of people get their windows broken in their parking lot due to it being really dark & lack of security. I got my window broken and the staff told me it was not the first time it happened and I don't get why they didn't do anything about it the first time it happened. I canceled my membership right away because it's clearly not a safe place. Very nice place to get a good workout in and a broken window. read more

I have been going to this gym since I was a kid with my parents! It is really one of my favorite gyms - probably the best in my opinion. They gym is located right off the freeway - so it's easy to get to. Plenty of parking - lower level and upper level. The staff people here are really nice and seem to take their job seriously - except for this one middle aged women , she always seems to be in a bad mood and somewhat rude. They gym itself is really nice & always clean. The first floor has the check in , cardio room, cycling room, lounge area, 2 studios (A&B) , weight room, personal trainer room, bathroom and elevator. The second level has, the indoor basketball gym, child watch, racket ball rooms, men's/boys locker room, women's/girls locker room, indoor heated swimming pool and meeting room that views the pool. During the off school season you will find a lot of kids here because they have summer camp - which is kind of annoying. The locker rooms are the cleanest locker rooms I have ever seen. You can have a personal locker (for an extra monthly fee) or a daily use locker. Both locker rooms have saunas which is nice after a work out. The swimming pool is heated and really nice. I take my kid here for parent tot swim which is really enjoyable for her. For parents who are curious about the child watch area: the child runs until about age 6. It's a really nice , colorful area for kids. They have cubbies for your child's bag. It's a really safe area , with plenty of toys for your child to play with. Busier times for child watch are 8am to 10am and after 2pm to 6pm. Staff there are pretty nice and welcoming. If your child deals with some separation anxiety give your child some time to adjust to the new environment. Child watch is open everyday , except for Sundays and hours may vary so ask for a schedule. Overall a good gym , recommend it to people who are thinking about joining or looking for a gym in their area. Yes it's pricey & you get what you pay for and it's 100% worth it! read more

Love this gym. Everyone at the front is friendly & helpful. The group classes are fun... love working out with nice people. The locker room is clean.
