It took me a really long time to sit down and write this review, as I have very mixed feelings…read moreabout my experience at little excellence. I didn't want to write it while the wound was fresh and I was still upset about what happened. Little excellence was my 2 year old daughters first school experience and she was going full time 3 days a week, with an extra hour of care in the morning. Everything went swimmingly in the beginning and she loved going there. November hit and the honeymoon was over. I got a call that my daughters face got scratched and that there was a mark on her face over a fight over a toy and that as a response my daughter put her mouth on the child as if she was going to bite him but did not leave any marks (as per the phone call message I received). This was our "first warning that she could be "kicked out". I did my part and printed books for both school and home on why we can't bite, as the school asked me to come up with a plan for her. I gave them strategies via email and in person on how to better help her especially before she gets frustrated. There was a second incident, where no one was able to tell me what exactly happened as it was during diaper changing time and there "was not enough staff to watch all the kids at that time". I was told my child had to leave the school as per their policy which I had no problem complying with, but when I asked to see the video so I could see what was happening so I could better help and see what was occurring before the incident, I never received a response. This cut me to my core as it was right before Christmas and my daughter had no idea she was about to be ripped from the only school she's ever known leaving us in a position to scramble for a school. Her last day was the Christmas party where the staff talked about how sweet my daughter was and how sad they were to see her leave, but it was difficult for me to hear as it was not our choice to leave. I do not dispute the school policy and them following the policy what I did not like was how it was handled. No one offered to help her work through this very normal unfortunate toddler behavior. No one allowed me to see how, when or why it was occurring via video. Needless to say we found a great school for our daughter and she is thriving there so much we increased her to 5 full days. Overall I feel like the school has very young teachers who need the time and experience to gain knowledge on how to intervene and teach students rather than resorting to expulsion. I am sticking with 3 stars because my daughter really did love going here and she always had a great time, in morning care she had no issues. Although the teachers were young they still need some more experiences to help them better intervene with toddlers in the future. This wasn't the school for us, but maybe it will be for others.

All the activities which are super cute, are included in the monthly tuition which is not expensive compared to other day cares. I highly recommend this day care . My child comes home with wonderful art projects all the time. The kids also have Spanish and yoga lessons. The school environment is unbelievably welcoming to both students and parents and we both felt at home there immediately. Parents are invited into the classroom (for entire class sessions!) regularly to share the school full experience with their children--there is absolutely nothing to hide at CHMS! The entire school is immaculate and gorgeous--classrooms are spacious with tons of natural light streaming in and they feature the children's artwork everywhere you turn. Also, the children have weekly yoga and music classes in addition to art! The teachers at Children's Harbor are all Montessori trained and go the extra mile on a daily basis; they do a wonderful job creating a child-centered atmosphere that really makes students look forward to each school day (even my daughter who was not at all the type to want to go to school in her two years of preschool before attending CHMS), and they individualize the work so that each child moves at his/her own pace and on the appropriate level. The students learn through play--just the way they should at this age. I truly feel that this makes the children really soar! My daughter's teacher takes her personality into account when working with her and this makes all the difference. My daughter didn't have much of an interest in letters at the start of the school year, but now she has mastered them and is reading and writing beautifully. I'm astounded! I really can't believe that she is getting a true Montessori education for FREE because they offer UPK (now known as "Pre-K for all"). I am a teacher and have taught UPK at both private and public schools and have worked at a local college as a supervisor of early childhood student teachers in many different pre-k classrooms. These experiences have allowed me the unique opportunity to gain an insider's perspective on pre-k, and I can honestly say from experience that Children's Harbor really stands out among Staten Island preschools. It's a bit of a drive for us, but I don't mind it all all because I am so confident that my daughter is getting the best pre-k education possible and that this experience will have long-term positive effects on her attitude toward education. Children's Harbor Montessori School is a true gem!

A nice outdoor play area. This day care is really everything you want for your child and you can leave them there with confidence. They really love and care about your child. My son was 7 months old when we started here. The only negative is that the infant day care is on the lower floor and there is no elevator. ( actually there is an elevator, that allows you to take a long way there, but it seems to be often in disrepair!! ) other than that , this is a perfect day care. Yes it is closed on several Jewish holidays, which coincides with the public school holidays most of the time. Don't hesitate to use this place for day care, they really care about your child. My daughter LOVES her teachers. The director is very approachable and offers realistic solutions to issues - and she takes my concerns seriously every single time. I wish we found this place when we initially moved to NY, but we are here now and my mind is at ease because I know she loves it, she's taken care of, and she's learning. The teachers are incredible, class size small (10-14 students average/class), excellent extra curricular activities, & attentive administrators. The cost is very expensive ($26K for Kindergarten), but if you are of the mindset that private school is the only option for your children (as I am), then this is as good a place to send your children as any, particularly if you don't want to transport them to NYC. Ms. Frisina would yell at my son everyday. I don't know how she is qualified to work with kids. There is an app where we can see how our child is doing that day, and Ms. Frisina would never update it to keep us in the loop. Not to mention he was pushed in class one day and I was never notified. We only found out because the parent of the child who pushed my son apologized to my husband during a class presentation we all attended. The last straw was him being sent home with a black eye and blamed it on a tantrum. I called to speak with the coordinator and she had NO CLUE about any of this. Nothing was reported. Why wasn't the nurse called? When we asked to see classroom footage we were laughed off and told "we are unable to show parents the cameras." When I pulled my son out they just sent us on our way like nothing. This was my son's first experience with school and it was horrible. Now the staff is the best part - they update you on every single thing your kid is doing all day. If a diaper is wet - you know, if it's dry - you know, if they don't eat all of their food - you know, what they're learning - you know. Pictures? At least 5 a day! Everyone tells me that my daughter is gifted and I believe it, I also believe that the staff is encouraging and making sure they add more to what she knows everyday. I don't need my daughter to be a genius, I need her to be happy and she is. Everyday we pull up to the school, she is excited to walk in. At pick up, the entire staff is hugging her and telling her how beautiful and smart she is. I could go on, but who's reading this far? My older toddler is going to begin there soon and I hope he's met with just as much kindness, love, patience, and encouragement.
