As with many of…read morethe markers in the Commonwealth, it points out some Civil War history that took place here. The marker reads, "Aug. 23, 1862, Col. Scott's La. cavalry, of Gen. Kirby Smith's invading army from Tenn., routed Col. Metcalfe and Union troops. Approaching Richmond as USA army arrived, Scott went back to Camp Wildcat, then joined Smith in Richmond victory, Aug. 30, 1862. Mar. 1864, Gen. Grant on way to take command of all US armies stopped at house south of here." It is marker number 514 and it was erected by the Kentucky historical Society after it was cast in 1962. Fields Clay built "Lynwood" in 1880 for Brutus J. Clay II, her husband, on her 287 acre farm. Samuel E. des Jardins designed the Queen Anne style house. Bricks were molded nearby. Its interior contained elegant woodwork plus other modern features. Brick & wood materials for the cook's and carriage houses came from a salvaged house on-site." And on the reverse, "Brutus Clay II/Pattie A. Clay - Married in 1872, they had 5 children. Brutus Clay II was a successful businessman, farmer, and federal emissary. Pattie A. Clay spent much time from her youth tending to the sick and infirm. When she died in 1891 at age 33, he honored her memory by donating a house on Glyndon Avenue as a public infirmary. The name, Pattie A. Clay Hospital, was used until 2012." It is marker number 2573 and was erected in 2019 by Kentucky Historical Society, Kentucky Department of Highways. While an alarming and sad monument it conveys a strong reminder of being safe when traveling highways. The liver itself is surrounded by a large decorative rock which makes it easy to spot when at the welcome center.

The Clay's Ferry Bridge is a combination of three former bridges combined into one bridge. Considering I have cousins that live in Fayette County and my daughter was born in Madison County you can take my word for it that I've gone over this bridge many times. I'm sorry I was busy driving the last time I went over this bridge or I would have taken a photo. You really need to be a distance away to capture the bridge as it is today. At highway level, there isn't much to see other than three lanes of in each direction with a low wall that overlooks the river. There are clear signs prohibiting stopping or pedestrian traffic on the bridge. I'd have to guess they had traffic problems and maybe BASE jumpers here as it is some 200 feet over the river. The bridge is actually three bridges, with the original piers from the 1946 and 1963 bridges being used as part of the construction of the new bridge. Completed in in 1998 there are three lanes in each direction and full-width shoulders. Each northbound/southbound roadway is 60 feet wide and it was most recently resurfaced in 2021. Each corner and wall is packed with artifacts and memorabilia, and the museum curators are eager to explain each piece. There are features connecting to Native Americans, Berea College, and the history of the Red River Gorge Caves. This museum is vital to enjoying your time in the area, a private tour is needed!

Seeing High Bridge has been on my local bucket list for YEARS, and here's why: I know a couple…read morewhose wedding reception was there, I know a couple who got engaged there, and I know someone with a TATTOO of High Bridge! So I wanted to know what the big deal was. Surely there's more significance than their crisp and refreshing drinking water? After visiting I'm not so sure, BUT it is a historically significant and fascinating bridge, to be sure. The grounds have a few picnic areas, as well as an old (but renovated) pavilion and restroom facilities. There is an overlook where you can walk out and get a spectacular view of the bridge and the Palisades, and read up on the history of the structure. The grounds also house a barge (?) and a caboose. It's interesting to see, and I suppose if you're a bridge or train enthusiast it might be worth a special trip, but honestly, the drive to and from the park was way more scenic than the park itself.
