If you care about easy beach access, a nice freshwater pool, reserved covered parking, and peace & quiet during your stay, Beachhead may be just right for you. If quirky old properties make you squeamish, keep looking for a newer hotel or other new construction short-term rental. Note that we stayed in Unit 106 and rented via VRBO; your experience may vary. Our 3rd floor unit had 2 bedrooms with queen-sized beds, 2 full baths en suite, a large balcony with dune and Gulf views, full electric kitchen, cold A/C, and fine WIFI. There were 2 futon sofas in the living room to max the sleeping capacity to 6, but we found the space to be perfect for our family of 2 adults and 1 teen. We never heard any of our neighbors and got the impression that many of the units are owner-occupied or long-term rentals rather than vacationers. Other shared amentities of note: - charcoal grills & picnic tables - playscape - large gameroom - volley ball court - heated pool - key-coded gates to pool and beach access - shower station at beach access point The property was built in 1969 in a primo location right at beach marker 4, somehow ideally situated close enough to the action of "downtown" Port A, but far enough away from both beach access roads to limit the biggest (and rowdiest) crowds. Being 50+ years old, the property has some quirks and does show need for updates. During our Summer 2021 stay, we noted that the pool restroom showers were out of order and there were numerous drainage issues throughout the property following a week of heavy rains. The heated pool and adjacent clubhouse with lounge and games tables were in excellent shape, perhaps recently overhauled. Our unit 106 clearly needed refreshed wall coverings, remodeled bathrooms, and appliance updates, as well as more frequent exterminator treatment (although roaches are almost impossible to avoid on the Gulf coast, it's still a bit upsetting to see even 1; we made sure all dishes were cleaned right away and dry goods effectively sealed). The cheap appliances make too many noises, they use cheap tube TVs, the living and dining rooms have patio furniture, and the wiring is defective. I mean bad defective; it fried my PS3! Here's the story. I was playing my PS3 from my old house nearby before I brought it over. When I plugged it into the TV here, I didn't think anything of it at first, but I saw a light go on in the room somewhere while I was connecting the A/V cable behind the TV. I was more distracted by the blue spark that came when I touched the video cable to the video input jack on the TV, but I worked in electronics for almost 20 years, and I've seen static sparks before. So I came around to the front, hit the input select button, and the main menu was on the screen, however, there was a lot of interference. I figured it was like that because I had it on HD at the house, and this rinky-dink piece of junk TV was not HD. So then I managed to adjust the settings on the Playstation to 4:3 480i, but nothing changed on the screen. Next I thought maybe it was a bad input, so I moved the A/V cable to the front of the TV, and again I noticed (but again paid no attention to the fact that) a light somewhere in the room went off when I unplugged the A/V cable. I plugged the cable into the front port on the TV, switched the input, but this time I got nothing. So I decided to try the back one more time. This time, however, I saw the porch lights went off as soon as I plugged in the video cable to the TV. Surprised by this, I pulled the cable back out, and off the porch light went. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, so I pushed it back in, and on came the light. Knowing something was dreadfully wrong now, I unplugged the whole thing, and took the PS3 to the bedroom TV to try it there, only this time, the PS3 wouldn't turn on. It was dead. The next day, I called the Office to report what had happened. They said they'd have the manager come out and check it out, and they said he'd be out before noon. I waited, and waited, and waited. One O'clock came, no manager. I finally had to leave to get some groceries, so I stopped by the office to see what was going on. The manager came out and told me he had an electrician coming out to check it out, but he didn't know what time he was coming. So I went to get my groceries. While I was at the store, I received a call on my cell. It was the manager. He led off telling me nothing was wrong with the TV, and even put the electrician on to confirm. Upset, and certain there was something amiss, I checked out my groceries and went back to my room. They were all still in the room; 2 electricians, the manager, and another member of the condo staff. They were discussing a problem with the wiring to the porch lights. When I reiterated that the porch lights were the lights going on and off when I plugged and unplugged the A/V cable on the TV, the electrician kept insisting it was not possible because the TV was on a different circuit altogether. I tried to rebut, but was ignored. They eventually determined that there was a major issue with the wiring, and that the manager needed to call Scott Electric, the original company who ran the wiring. Despite the fact that there were irregularities with the wiring, and they involved the same lights I pointed out were responding to a seemingly uninvolved connection, the manager said they were not going to do anything about my loss. All I can say is, there are plenty of nicer places to stay on Padre Island. I suggest you avoid Puente Vista.
