Based on a little pre-trip research, 1862 Dry Bar was on my must-do list for a recent business trip…read moreto Madrid. I visited on a rainy Thursday night so there wasn't a large crowd and I grabbed an open seat at the end of the bar. A friendly gentleman gave me a menu and asked what I was interested in. When I mentioned the Old Fashioned, he advised that it was an Amaro-based version without the usual bourbon/whiskey spirit. I noticed a Brooklyn and commented that I sometimes made those at home. Very politely he noted that if I was making them in the US, it wasn't with Amer Picon, which isn't available in the US. He's right. So an actual, real Brooklyn it would be! I thoroughly enjoyed the Brooklyn. I also enjoyed some brief conversation with the bartender who was very good. The kind who uses the spoon or straw to taste each drink to ensure it was made properly. As I was paying my bill and mentioning to the gentleman who initially greeted me that I wanted to bring my business partners here later in the week, he wrote his phone number on a business card and told me to call him in advance as the bar got very busy when it wasn't raining. Turns out, this friendly man is Alberto the owner! Guess I didn't do quite as much research as I could have! I regret we weren't able to make a second visit to 1862 Dry Bar on this particular trip, but it is going to be my first stop next time I'm back in Madrid. Great vibe, excellent staff and a classy and friendly owner.

My friend and I were seated quickly and we flipped through their menu. We decided to share an order of their chelinda nachos that were chips topped with salsa, guacamole, jalapenos, and melted cheese. I got their chicken tinga tacos and my friend got their chicken quesadilla. Everything was delicious! The only thing that was missing from my tacos was some salsa, onions, and cilantro. The waiter was super busy, so I was unable to ask for this. However, the chicken was okay and had just a hint of spice. I think it could've had more spice for my taste. I think I preferred the quesadilla and nachos compared to the tacos. The nachos were filling and the guacamole was so yummy and fresh. It paired well with the sangria mexicana--which is sangria with some tequila. It was super big and refreshing! It was my birthday, so they turned up a song and got me a sombrero to wear. I had a fun time with this! I would come back for more nachos.

I personally preferred the margarita over the Bloody Mary as it tasted overwhelmingly of tomato juice (and little of anything else) Food - La bomba is meat (beef, pork) filled potato and it was yummy, probably my fave of all the tapas we tried. Chicken dumplings had a nice crisp and nice sauce but taste was just OK. Tacos were quite good! Nice flavor and creative presentation with the sauce in the pipette for you to pour. Lastly was the salad made of fresh arugula, beets, tomatoes, peppers - a great end to the "meal" and ironically was the warmest thing we got. Other tapas served lukewarm.

Our reservation was around 7, and it was quiet until it got closer to 8:30pm. It seems like the food has some Japanese influences, which made the food more delicious! My favorite dishes were the fried green tomatoes with goat cheese (the combination with the jam and arugula made it that much better), scallops (they gave us a little pipette to put teriyaki sauce on it, very creative!), and the Spanish tortilla with iberico stew (meat was tender). We were pretty full but left room for dessert. We had the sticky toffee pudding, and it didn't disappoint. There was a scoop of ice cream on top and the toffee sauce poured over it. It melted in my mouth. Their tinto de verano was very refreshing and probably my favorite one I had during my trip! Wish I could go back, it was that amazing of a meal!
