And lastly, the Yorkshire... large, crispy, gravy sodden perfection. I wanted a roast. I got a great one. And since I've last been they've renovated the garden area. Once I stepped in though, to the stares of the "regulars", I immediately found out that they do not serve food. But a couple of kind patrons engaged me and offered a suggestion: the Horton Arms. One of them was obviously very fond of the food there, and that was about all I needed to decide to try them. So I walked there -- and it's a good ways by foot, but then I'm after some good food... Unfortunately, they had finished serving dinner by the time I arrived, about 19:45 (7:45pm). That seems a bit early to me, but what could I do? Answer: return the next evening. So the next evening I arrived in time, and was quickly seated. I perused the menu, which had my usual favorites like Fish and Chips, and Steak and Ale Pie. But there was something on the menu which I'd never had, and it really piqued my curiosity -- a cheese and onion pie. "That can't be all there is," I thought; that's like ALL cheese... isn't that too much cheese?? But British Pubs generally do pie crust so well you could put damn near anything inside it and it would be really lovely. So I was a bit torn. The waitress arrived. I was explaining to her how I was trying to decide amongst my options, the cheese and onion pie being one of them, when she told me that the c&o pie was really nice... and that's all it took. When else will I have the chance to try this? -- and from a highly recommended pub too. Decided. The result? OMG! That was so good! See the accompanying picture I took. Just incredible. And the cheese was not overpowering. Now where am I going to find THAT over here (U.S.) when I crave it?? Especially in Minnesota!? (Probably nowhere...) Looking at all the different dishes that went by me while I was waiting for my slice of deliciousness, I can pretty well bet that anything you order here will be a delight. Yes, I recommend you try this place. It is now a destination for me every time I am in the Oldham area.

However, upon arrival we had to 'search' for a member of staff to book us in. She showed us to our table and took our orders. My daughter had the vegan burger which should have come with roasted crushed potatoes. Instead it came with new potatoes. When she queried this, her plate was taken away and the potatoes crushed with the plate returned to her. My son in law ordered a bacon burger. The main ingredient to this is bacon but alas the burger was lacking bacon. When he queried this he was given two small rashers of bacon on a saucer. Both my daughter and son in law asked for unlimited drinks. When they asked the waitress for top ups they never got them. A very disappointing visit. Next time when I visit my daughter I think I will eat elsewhere. So my wife and I go for a walk down the Rochdale Canal and end up at the Rose at about 4.30 on Saturday to find an empty restaurant. I'd gone to pick up the car and got in five minutes after my wife who had had a chat with some of the young but not so enthusiastic staff. She had got us a table and a bottle of wine and asked one of the waiting staff about the offer of 20% off. The answer was that it had expired. 'But we only got an email yesterday, tried to book on line but your site wouldn't let us and now I'm sat in an empty restaurant so can you explain why there were no tables available?' There was no explanation forthcoming but the manager had said we needed to book on line and bring a print off of the email. I then arrived and after quite a wait while two young women waiters wandered about paying no attention to us or the people who now occupied the next table and another sat near the till doing very little, one came to us to take our order. This time I asked if we could see the manager to discuss this great offer of 20% off all food and drink. After all we were in a pub we liked, at a table in a nice little restaurant absolutely determined to spend our money. The manager came and began to patiently talk down to me by informing me that we had to book online to get the discount. I was still holding out in my determination to spend money in this pub and in my faith that a manager might just want some of my hard earned cash enough to offer something of a compromise. I was wrong. She insisted that not only did we have to book online, I had to print off the email. I informed her that I had tried to book online but her site had not allowed it; that the email also said I could show her the offer on my phone, which I did and that the place was empty other than us and the people who were now occupying the next table. She then informed me that I probably couldn't book online because they were very busy. She was oblivious to the evidence of the empty room that sort of contradicted her statement. And then she returned to her mantra that we had to book online to get 20% off. So what could we do? I said that we would rather not spend any more money or time in the place so could we have our bill for the wine and we would go elsewhere to eat? The bill came, I paid and sat for a while in a virtually empty restaurant while we finished the bottle of wine and watched the people at the next table get up to find someone to take their order for some drinks.
