And it was burned during the Civil War and then in a later fire. The marker reads, "Twenty-two Kentucky courthouses were burned during Civil War, nineteen in last fifteen months: twelve by Confederates, eight by guerrillas, two by Union accident. Courthouse at Morehead burned by guerrillas March 21, 1864, the easternmost damaged incident to war. Building was again burned in 1880. County records before 1880 all destroyed by fires." The marker reads, "John Bell Hood, 1831-79, graduate of West Point, 1853. Eight years Indian campaigns. Resigned, 1861, and joined CSA as colonel, heading Texas Brigade. He gained distinction at Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, 1862, and at Gettysburg, Chickamauga, 1863. Appointed to command Army of Tenn. Met defeat: Atlanta in August, 1864; Franklin, Nashville in December. Lived in New Orleans after war." According to the wikipedia, "Hood had a reputation for bravery and aggressiveness that sometimes bordered on recklessness. Arguably one of the best brigade and division commanders in the CSA, Hood gradually became increasingly ineffective as he was promoted to lead larger, independent commands late in the war; his career and reputation were marred by his decisive defeats leading an army in the Atlanta Campaign and the Franklin-Nashville Campaign." Today, Fort Hood is a US Army base in Killeen Texas. That's midway between Austin and Waco. It is home to the 1st Cavalry Division and 3rd Cavalry Regiment, among others. There is a space to pull over to read the marker but again, very corroded. The marker says, "Indian Mound attributed to Adena people who inhabited Ohio Valley ca. 800 B.C. to 700 A.D. They began cultivating simple crops, bringing about a mixed hunting and farming economy. Central to Adena life were rituals involving cremation and mound building. Engraved stone tablets found here indicate mound to be Adena. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, 1975." I'm all for literacy and reading. This marker and the nearby white building are about ending…read moreilliteracy. We are, after all, in rural Kentucky. The marker reads, "Established in Rowan County, Ky., in 1911, by Mrs. Cora W. Stewart, "to emancipate from illiteracy those enslaved in its bondage." Because the people had to labor by day it was decided to have the schools on moonlight nights so the moon could light the way. The schools were taught by volunteer teachers. The machine to pay for the print-out wasn't working, but the librarian was super helpful. When I went to pay with my credit card, they told me they don't accept cc for less than $1, of course I didn't have any cash, so they took it out of the community change jar. So nice!! I need to remember to go back and replenish the coins. Very nice library.

It reads on the front, "Rowan County 'War", 1884, 1887. Political tensions led to this three-year period of violence which resulted in some twenty deaths. Conflict between John Martin and Floyd Tolliver caused Tolliver's death. His brother opposed Martin Ally D.B. Logan and killed two of Logan's cousins. Tolliver group then seized virtual control of the county." And on the reverse, "Feud violence came to climax in summer of 1887, when Logan and Hiram Pigman led faction that surrounded Craig Tolliver and his men. Resulting shoot-out ended in deaths of Tolliver and three others. State militia was sent in three times to restore order, and a state report suggested that Rowan Co. be abolished." Let me start by saying I'm a self-professed library nerd/frequent flyer, so I've visited a TON of…read morethem. The best thing about this one is the extended hours. The new building is spacious, but it seems to be the only thing that got an update. I was really disappointed. The clerks are friendly but unenthusiastic, and give the impression of wanting to do the least they can get by with. When someone asks for help, they point them in a general direction most of the time, rather than the typical library experience of taking them to what they're looking for. The gray-haired man and one clerk from the children's room are the only ones I've seen willingly leave the desk or converse with patrons. They don't have a lot of popular books you would expect to find, and can find, at libraries in surrounding counties, and the ones they do have are rarely in the proper place. The children's area, which consists of a carpeted stage, some stuffed animals and a few computers, is especially disorganized, even taking into account that kids pull out books and don't put them back correctly. The activities offered are toddler story time, monthly Lego club, no-frills movie nights and teen game nights. I appreciate what they do offer and don't mean to seem ungrateful, but I'm originally from a town with a population of 937 versus Mount Sterling's 7,209 and that library, which is older than me with the same clerks from when I was a child, has interactive children's toys, a better selection of books and WAY better activities happening more frequently. Libraries should feel magical! With passionate staff and proper management, this one would.
