I've got moderate psoriasis. More than ten years ago and my dermatologist suggested I try a tanning salon for help controlling my symptoms. Psoriasis is an auto immune disorder and there's lots of drugs available to threat it. They're advertised on TV every night. However all those drugs basically work the same way, by damaging the immune system, mostly the T cells and there's many potential side effects. For moderate to severe psoriasis the drugs are probably a good option, but there's real risks. Before modern drugs, the only way to control psoriasis was by exposure to UV rays. Dermatologists still offer UV treatments in their clinics. UVB rays are the most helpful for psoriasis. At Rio Tanning I use a bed that has 70% UVA rays and 30%UVB rays. I recently had my yearly checkup with my dermatologist and he confirmed that for this is the best way for me to treat my psoriasis. Staff is either very ignorant or they are scamming people!! Bought 1 month unlimited and was told by 2 different staff members their stand up bed was high pressure. The standup bed broke, not surprising since at least 5 bulbs were out the last time I was there! I asked what other high pressure bed is available and booked that one. Next day show up for appt for said bed and was told its an additional $16! I was then told, The unlimited month does not include high pressure beds. Then what have your staff been putting me in this whole time? They dont know what the hell they are doing which leads me to believe this is NOT a safe place to tan!!! Bad experience Just make sure when a year membership you want to stop, they continue to take your payment from your account and if you try to cancel it you need to go in person to bring them a signed notice of cancellation of service that they never notify you, they charged me for a year and I never used the service because they never knew that, the membership for a year it remains valid until you bring them a signed note that you no longer want the service, be careful because the owner never returns that money. The owner is very rude about money back problems. I never recibe a credit for that. read more

I'm a long time customer, and it didn't mean anything. I left a message to hold my favorite bed, which I pay extra for monthly, but the owner didn't get a chance to check her messages first and gave my bed away to a new person, and she said leaving a message is not an appointment. So obviously keeping someone happy who has been going there for 10 years is not as important as someone walking in new. and they made a mistake on billing and charged me more, but couldn't refund instead gave me useless stars read more

I'm sorry to say as much as I want to give a higher rating, the fact is this place I'd a major scam. The two stars is for customer service only. The rest isn't even worthy of one star. They never change the bulbs, it's took weeks off complaining for them to finally replace a few burnt out bulbs in the ultra bronze bed they charge am extra $16.50 every time. I'm really pale completed, normally burn in just a regular bed. The only way I'm getting any results is using a self tanning lotion before tanning. You can clearly see all the bulbs are very old. Then she tries to trick me saying bed ones bulbs were just changed, I'm like , "really all of them ,or just the burnt ones"? She's like, "honestly, I'm not sure..." come on, it's not too hard to tell just by looking! So don't waste your money here. It's a real shame though being the only place in Watsonville. As soon as my package expires I'm o off to Santa Cruz. read more

Rio is by far the BEST tanning salon I've been to. Nice, clean, updated beds! They have all the Bare Minerals line, including the READY line, which is my favorite! And the owner Roxanne is very knowledgeable in the product. I go there to tan and also to get my waxing done by April. She is awesome and is always friendly. went there for first time yesterday!! SUPER clean, friendly staff and standard pricing. But i guess pricing is better than standard when you consider all of their beds have new lights that are constantly rotated and new beds, some of which are UV free. I am pretty see through right now even though im half mexican and tan well, so I was told by one of the employees/(perhaps owner?) that she had burned in the medium pressure bed so for my first time it would be good to go in a low pressure bed for 8 out of the 20 minutes to build a base tan. She gave me helpful advice to turn over in the bed half way through, to get a more even tan and prevent from burning. I have been tanning on/off for years and no one has ever told me that- i always assumed laying on your back was standard because the facial tanner is usually on the top of the bed (not in these beds, they dont have one, which i usually prefer but these beds are so great i dont even think it matters) They have little ihomes where you can plug in your iphones/ipods, but not if they are the iphone 5 or higher unfortunately :/ thats the only downside, but who even cares. they do waxing as well, which i will definitely be back for. ANYWAYS, i bought ten stars for 66 with tax. thats 10 tans if i use the low pressure beds, and i thought it was really nice that the lady there didnt try to recommend the more expensive beds just for the benefit of the business, she gave me honest advice and said i should use the lower pressure beds to begin with cuz she herself had burned in the medium ones in the beginning. 8 minutes was the perfect recommendation, i feel like a got a little color, without burning, and i usually fry after my first time tanning when its been a while!! i cant wait to go back! i will definitely be buying more stars when i run out ! mirror vanity was the only place i liked in watsonville before they got sold and stopped their tanning. hated tanners cove and was very particular about what places i would even go to in santa cruz. i have a feeling this will be my new favorite!! read more

Mariela is an earth angel! I had a spray tan gone wrong at another salon two days before I was in a wedding. I called Rio Tanning the next morning (day before the wedding) and Mariela was so supportive. She gave me advice on how to move forward, made an appointment with me even though it was hours after her scheduled work day ended, she eased my anxiety and made me feel like a million bucks, and then she wouldn't let me pay her. Great place over all! They have great employees working there that are extremely friendly and knowledgable in there products and beds. A very clean salon that also specializes in make-up and waxing and a hair dresser! It's a one stop shop that Watsonville was in need of! I had a great experience there and will defiantly be going back on a regular basis :) They also offer make up classes that show you how to apply product and new fun styles. This place is phenomenal and I feel a lot of that has to do with the staff here ~ they're ALWAYS kind, friendly, accommodating and amazing at remembering their customer names. I tan here and periodically purchase makeup (Bare Minerals) and lotion (Hempz Herbal, plus various other super-hydrating options). Rio is kept very clean throughout and I've never used any bed or room that wasn't kept up. They're a popular place with a lot of traffic yet I've never seen it other than tidy and clean. I love this place! Always helpful and friendly staff. The salon is always super clean. In today's economy it's really nice to know that I can get great service at an affordable price. April does an amazing job on my eyebrows and is really flexible with appointments. I remember last summer I got into indoor tanning, I didn't know much about it, and wasn't sure how it all even works. I didn't know that after the timer goes off, it cuts into your actual tanning time. So basically I spent $12 or so for a four minute tan. I understand it was my stupid fault, but I was pretty pissed off and wished someone could have explained that to me (all while knowing I was new to tanning) I had a friend who made the same mistake, she told the employee and she allowed her to go in the bed for the amount of time she lost - this was at the tanning salon in Prunedale, which is where I take my business now. Sometimes it's a good idea to let things slide if you want to keep your clientele, just saying. :) Other than that, the staff always seems pretty nice and the place is clean. read more
