Over the last few years Ripcurl has been producing amazingly beautiful casual surf inspired clothing for women and men. Their eye catching designs in Men's tees, shorts and jackets is starting to have more appeal vs. Quiksilver in my opinion. You won't find surf boards here so it's not really a surf shop.... but they do sell a wide variety of cutting edge surf clothing, bikinis, flip flops, rash guards, sunglasses and surf accessories. The prices are inline with Quiksilver & Billabong. Kamaāina Discount! ~ If you're a local Hawaii resident they offer 10% off!

I had a great experience at the Rip Curl shop in Wailea. Amy was very helpful and attentive to my needs. I'm glad I decided to shop there.

They were pretty tired when they got back but that just means they got to ride a lot of waves in! My daughter said surfing was one of her favorite activities of the trip. The company was easy to find in the parking lot and they offered the option to tip digitally which we appreciated. We also purchased the optional photo package so got some great photos of our group on the water.

We found the spot easily and the van. Once we checked in, we filled out the waiver, fitted with a sun shirt and water shoes. We were also given a mesh bag to put our belongings in and this was put in their van. We were in a group of 6 people total and our guide was Mikey. Mikey went over the basics and had us practice on dry land and then we were off. It was only waist deep and most of the ocean floor was sand, with a few rocks, so the water shoes came in handy. Mikey found a wonderful area for us to ride waves on Kalama Beach and was very encouraging and positive. He'd tell you exactly what to do and when to do it to successfully surf. I am the least athletic person and I stood up on my first wave. Best of all, we saw a lot of turtles! I could have stayed all day and just enjoyed the turtles. Surfing is exhausting and I had a hysterectomy 6 months ago. When I wanted to just cheer people on, there was no pressure to get back out there. It was at my own pace. I really appreciated that. There is also a photographer to purchase pictures and we bought those as well for $120.00. $90.00 for 1 person and $120.00 for two. It will be 48 hours or so until those come in digitally. Gratuity isn't included, so we brought cash. If you need to, there is also a digital way to tip your instructor. If you use this company, ask for Mikey. He's a great teacher and very enthusiastic with his small group. Con: on the Viator website it lists "light refreshments", which wasn't offered. If I had to do it again, I'd skip Viator and book directly with the company. If you book directly with the company it's $88.00 per person.

From the initial communication and detailed information provided beforehand to the beautiful location and overall organization, everything was seamless and professional. Theo was an absolutely fantastic instructor. As a parent, I was nervous because my son had never surfed before, but Theo immediately put us at ease. He took the time to explain his approach, including why he wanted to start on smaller waves and ease my son into the experience rather than pushing too hard too fast. That thoughtful approach made all the difference. Theo was incredibly encouraging, motivating, and patient throughout the lesson. He paid close attention to my son's energy level and knew exactly when breaks were needed, which was especially important for a young child. He struck the perfect balance between building confidence and keeping the experience fun and positive. I was also extremely grateful for Theo's communication with us as parents. He kept us informed, answered our questions, and made us feel comfortable every step of the way. Overall, this was an outstanding experience, and I cannot recommend them enough!! If you're visiting and considering surf lessons, do it. In fact, I left wishing I had booked a lesson for myself as well! Thank you, Theo, for making my son's first surfing experience such a memorable and positive one.

LahAina Surf Shack has amazing instructors, and will get you into the right waves regardless of the conditions. Talvi and Gianna from LSS hosted me and my son at Guardrails last week. It was my son's first time surfing, and I asked him whether he wanted me to teach him myself or if he wanted to do a surf school. I have a whole life of experience in the ocean: swimming, surfing, diving. My son is not like that; I've never pressured him to swim or surf, and until the last year he hadn't been remotely interested. When he found out we were going to Maui he started asking relentlessly, albeit cautiously. He wanted to go with a surf school so he could learn from the pros. Okay let's go! I signed up several weeks in advance not knowing what the conditions would be like, and last Tuesday the waves were pretty small. I signed up for a time later in the day (midday, when it's usually windier). I explained to my son before we left our rental that morning that all of these different factors come into play in surfing: tide, wind, swell direction and interval, sea floor shape (bathymetry). When we got there, all of those things came into play, to create not ideal conditions. Several other surf schools had congregated around the general area of the break. Talvi and Gianna greeted us, and went over some practice catching a wave and standing up on the beach. In between moments Talvi, Gianna and I chatted about where we should head toward and we agreed that a little higher up the reef than others were sitting. Talvi helped my son get into the right spot over and over again, the few waves that came through he would line him up and get him onto the best waves, while the other camps were not in position to catch the few waves that were coming through. Gianna and I traded off the waves in between. Eventually the other camps went in and it was just the four of us. The tide swamped just about anything from breaking and we called it quits right on time. My son was fully exhausted, and Talvi had gotten him onto more than a handful of waves. My son was anxious and nervous to fall, so he didn't get up from his knees; but Talvi got him in the spot and he had the opportunity to stand up and helped guide him on the wave and kept him going the right direction and pulled him off the wave before he got washed up in the shore pound. To me, the most important part of the experience was to help curate a positive experience that doesn't push a new surfer into an experience that leaves them scared or afraid to do it again. That is what I wanted, and LahAina Surf Shop, Talvi and Gianna gave us that. It's the perfect spring board for him to go try more, just with me back home in California. That is a true gift! Thank you! It was genuinely wonderful to get to meet these two local surfers and amazing ambassadors of the sport. Would recommend to anyone.

She was really cool and friendly. She gave us some helpful info and tips, including a small pamphlet, about Black Rock Beach: https://www.yelp.com/biz/black-rock-beach-lahaina. I also ended up renting some snorkel gear from her later for Black Rock. The snorkel set - mask, snorkel, and fins - cost a little under $30 for about 24 hours. I thought it was worth it. We saw a lot of beautiful, colorful, and interesting types of tropical fish, both off the coast in front of our resort (Marriott) and up at Black Rock. We saw lots of coral and swam with a green sea turtle too (that was the best part). The snorkel gear was high-quality. The goggles had been treated with an anti-fog / defog solution so they never fogged up. That was nice. Aqualani is a small chain with locations on Maui and Oahu (Waikiki). Most, if not all, of Aqualani's locations on Maui are at resorts and condos along Ka'anapali Beach on the west side of the island: https://www.yelp.com/biz/kaanapali-beach-lahaina. Along with the Marriott, they include the Sheraton, Westin, Honua, and Hyatt resorts. Since we were staying at the Marriott, I was able to have my rental charged to our room. In general, Aqualani is very useful and convenient to have around these beach resorts. In addition to offering snorkel gear and a knowledgeable staff, these stores sell and/or rent out various beach and pool items like sunscreen, sunglasses (Maui Jim), boogie boards, surfboards, pool floats, rafts, and kayaks. Some locations also offer umbrella, cabana, and gazebo rentals. Rentals are available by the hour, day, and/or week. So, you don't have to haul some of your beach/pool gear from home all the way to Hawaii. Thank you, Megan and Aqualani.

We had our own reef shoes, but he also offered them which are a must for certain surf spots like Launiupoko. He was a little late and had to change our rendezvous spot. But he called/texted to give me updates, and it's pretty understandable given that he's driving around the island dropping off and picking up boards.
