It now stands out on Boar Lane in the shopping area of Leeds as a magnificent Georgian building. It is a Church of England church and still holds services of Holy Communion Sunday, Tuesday and Friday although most people probably don't realise this. I heard that the congregation is very small (but strong) and for most of the time is is an arts and music venue holding gigs and exhibitions. It is a great venue for this so its nice to see that it can survive running simultaneously as a place for worship and art.

There's something really atmospheric and a little spooky about a rock/folk band playing in a church. And Amy's powerful, haunting voice only adds to that vibe (as well as plastering you up against the nearest wall with its power). The Evens ascetic, preachy vibe was perfectly suited to this venue: the hard wood pews, the spooky light coming through the stained glass windows, the (I think) Gothic architecture The packed hall, lots of people sitting cross-legged up front, it all gave a fantastic feeling of community very fitting to a church. It all just came together for one of the most intense gigs ever!

Phrases like 'atmospheric', 'hidden gem' and 'perfectly preserved' often get bandied about when…read moretalking about old buildings, but this church, tucked away from the busy, touristy streets of old York, fits them better than most. For a start, it really is hidden: the churchyard is secluded behind rows of old buildings, accessed by narrow alleyways. It would not look out of place in a remote village. And it is perfectly preserved: such restoration as was undertaken by the Victorians seems to have been extraordinarily sensitive. It is about as close as you can get to how a church would have looked after the Reformation: dark, quiet, homely, with uneven floors, high box pews and plain walls. With candle-light it must perfectly evoke the late 17th century. It is rightly a Grade I listed building. The church actually dates back to the 12th century, although the current building owes rather more to the 13th-15th centuries: although part of the Chancel dates from the 12th century, the South Aisle and Chapel date from date from 1340, the Tower and North Aisle were built in the first half of the 15th century. The box pews are recorded as being repaired in 1633, and new ones added in 1700-1725. The pulpit dates from 1695. But the church's most notable feature - as is so often the case in York - is its mediaeval stained glass. The windows are decorated and perpendicular in style. The best is the late Perpendicular east window: this dates from 1470-71 and was presented by the then rector, John Walker. The glass depicts saints, including St George and St Christopher, as well as heraldic shields, around a central panel in which a representation of God as the Trinity holding the dead Christ, with the donors at his feet. Other features include a simple 15th century font and wall plaques recalling Lord Mayors of York, including the 'Railway King', George Hudson. The church is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

What make this place stand out for me is the 18C pews inside; they're very tall and a whole family can fit inside one and sit facing each other.

I appreciate the skill and beauty in a good stain glass window and find the eerie cold and echoes that you get in old churches quite compelling and interesting. It's nice to walk in from off the street into something that feels very different and has a quietness that is slightly other worldly. St Aidans in Harehills is a lovely old building, still very much in full swing. It opened it's doors in 1894 and is one of the few Anglican parishes to celebrate Mass daily. Inside they have a huge organ, an intricately designed pulpit, various ancient hand carved statues and a very beautiful baptistery and font made in Newcastle from various different marbles. They are open at some point every day. They hold a youth club, a mothers club and tours for groups in which you can view The Brangwyn Mosiac. Especially good for school visits.

The Crypt is such a great place, helping out those who really need our help in Leeds city, with opportunities to serve and help out as a volunteer too.

All Saints is one of York's finest churches, and contains a wealth of interesting furnishings,…read morealong with impressive mediaeval glass. Tradition states that the first All Saints was built here in 685AD for St Cuthbert, and a church certainly existed here in mediaeval times. However, the present church dates from the late 14th century, and has in its Perpendicular Gothic lines an architectural unity rare in this city of ancient churches. It was a Guild church, and shields from some of the Guilds are located at the end of the pews. From the outside, the most distinctive feature is its octagonal tower, dating from around 1400, surmounted with one of the finest lanterns in the country. This really was a lantern in mediaeval times: a light was kept burning here to guide travellers into York, and inside the church are two of the huge and rather crude lenses used to focus the light. The interior is spacious, if rather truncated: the original chancel was demolished to make way for a market in 1782. The attractive blue panelled nave ceiling dates from the 15th century, but it is the fittings and furnishings that provide the interest. Chief of these is the glass: the three East windows are all by Kempe, and the West window dates from around 1370, and was brought from St Saviour's in 1957. The series of panels depicting the Passion is claimed to be unique, and is certainly rare. Other items of interest include an Anglo-Danish grave cover from the 10th century; an elegant 17th century pulpit dated 1634, from which John Wesley (1703-1791), the co-founder of the Methodist church, preached; a 15th century lectern; the aforementioned lantern lenses; a Lord Mayors' Board (34 of them are buried here); and replicas of the helmet, sword and gauntlets of Thomas Percy, 7th Earl of Northumberland, who was executed in The Pavement in 1572 for leading a rebellion against Elizabeth I.

A few years on and its clear that this church is fully functioning and has an active congregation. There are flowers blooming in the garden area and a sign welcoming people in. This is great as it is such a beautiful building really adding to the traditional cityscape of Leeds with is blackened stone bricks from more industrial times. It lies on the road towards Headingley, a little way out of the city centre. The Ashwood group functions in the church, running music groups and a youth club. I have cycled past a few times on a Friday or Saturday night around midnight to see a few people gathered round a bbq giving out burgers to drunk students passing by. I have seen a similar crew in Headingley and I think they call themselves Jesus's Army, or something similar. Whilst I am not a Christian, I do admire the enthusiasm of the people involved in this church and how they engage with the community - I couldn't refuse a free burger on a Saturday night could I?!

Built unusually all in one go, St Michael's replaced an earlier church on the site during the reign…read moreof Henry VIII, and sits at the end of Petergate in the shadow of the Minster. The exterior is (predictably) executed in Tudor Gothic, and is wide and low. The west front is newer, as it was rebuilt in the 19th century when adjacent houses were demolished. Inside, the church has generous aisles running the length of the church, but the real reason for a visit is to see the fine 18th century Baroque Altarpiece and the collection of late maediaeval glass: that in the East window dates from the mid-14th century and comes from the previous church, whereas that in the aisles dates from its rebuilding in the mid 16th century, in the Flemish style. There is also an extensive collection of 18th century monuments and memorials. Many visitors come to see the enlarged copy of Guy Fawkes' baptismal entry in the church's registers: I had no idea that our most famous traitor was born an Anglican! The modern church has a large and very active congregation, broadly evangelical in style.
