Two of us ventured out midweek on a chilly night to give this place a try out before deciding where to reserve for an extended family dinner. We were intrigued by all the positive reviews. On arriving we were greeted by the proprietor & were offered our choice of tables. The dining room fronts the bar area. It has well spaced seating arrangements with Linens on the tables & comfortable chairs. Our server, an experienced, energetic & pleasant individual, helped us navigate the menu & we found our selections: clams casino to start & our entrees, GAMERONI ALLA SCAMPI & grilled swordfish tasty. The on the small side but very fresh swordfish steak, in a wisp of delicious piccata sauce was just slightly over cooked but that aside, 3 very lonesome looking slender stalks of grilled asparagus mated with a crispy potato cake & the swordfish left a lot of open real estate on the plate. The fresh Pasta with the shrimp dish was very good & perfectly cooked. Very oddly though, our salads that came with/before our meals were minuscule & one dimensional. This & overall value caused us to drop RISTORANTE DI SOFIA from 4 starts to 3.5 but as Yelp doesn't fractionalize we selected 4. We dined at Sofia di Ristorante in Stratford, for the first time. This review will reflect our delight and our very mild disappointments. Parking is generous and easy! Pros: It's a lovely room. Every table is generous, the seating is very comfortable. The room has a decidedly euro-modern feel. All tables are covered in table clothes, nothing is short changed in terms of ambiance. The food they offer is well made, the chef is very good. We both had clams casino that were delicious ( we have found these to be unpredictable at other restaurants). A generous number of whole clams, bacon, butter, well grilled. Yum! Our friends had the calamari and loved it. The menu: Everything on the menu is appealing. Our group had veal, a delicious Zuppe Di Pesce (Fresh Scallops, Mussels, Clams, Calamari & Shrimp simmered in a Marinara Sauce over linguini Pasta or a Garlic Lemon Wine sauce). We had the Chicken Frances and Chicken Napolitano...both tender, juicy, well seasoned and delicious. The service: Absolutely wonderful service, enough cannot be said as to how important this is, Sofia's got it right! Our busboy was charming and fast, our waiter was engaging and warm. The owner stopped by to say hello and warmly thanked us when we left. They checked on us intermittently to make sure we were well pleased but not so often you wished they'd leave you alone! Cons (not many!): One note: I am no connoisseur of wine! That said, the wine was not full bodied, don't know what brand (Pinot Grigio) but it left something to be desired in terms of aroma and flavor. The upside was it was a generous amount! I feel certain had I expressed unhappiness it would have been replaced. I did not...and was not a big deal. I include it here in case you have a favorite and want to know about the house brand. Although there was a bolognese dish on the menu there were not many beef offerings other than the strip steak. We don't eat veal so that left us with limited meat offerings. So our choices became mostly shell fish, pasta or chicken. Unfortunately I can't speak to the desserts which looked really good but we were under time constraints and had to leave. Will try it on our next visit. All that said, whatever we ordered was extremely good and would certainly entice us to come again..and we will. But here's the big criticism.... the absence of any sound proofing (be it decor-- curtains, carpeting or properly placed acoustic ceiling tiles) made it very difficult to hold a conversation. It became so loud as the room filled up (and it did--a very good sign mid-week) that we could not hear the person sitting right next to us let alone across the table. This is an easy fix and should be addressed as I've seen this same comment here from2 other diners one of whom said they would not go back because of it. We will definitely be back, but hope that some kind of noise abatement is considered soon! All and all a very good place to dine and enjoy the good food and atmosphere! read more

The newest hidden gem in Stratford, Ristorante Di Sofia is our new Italian spot! We got takeout from there the other night and wow were we blown away with the food! I got chicken piccata and my wife got gnocchi di Bella, and we got a calamari appetizer. Included with our orders we got side salads, and a nice amount of toasted bread (4-5 big slices). The chicken piccata was super flavorful, I loved the lemon wine sauce. I thought it was odd the pasta was served separately and with red sauce but I enjoyed that separately nonetheless. The calamari was really fresh, well seasoned, and I would totally order it again! I tasted the gnocchi and it was really good too. Highly recommend checking out this local restaurant read more

Delicious and enjoyable night out!!! We arrived to find this new restaurant nicely painted and clean. Crisp white tablecloths and napkins were on the tables. The man who greeted us was kind and gentlemanly. We arrived before normal dinner hour and had our choice of table. First course was the hot antipasto. The calamari was cooked perfectly and the breading was very flavorful. Stuffed mushrooms were tasty enough. The clams casino were such a treat. The star for me was the eggplant rollatini--I could have eaten a whole plate of those! My spouse loves fried mozzarella so we also got an order of that--he felt it had sat a few minutes before coming out. I still thought it was good but the mozz did not ooze when cut into--it had already firmed up. We both LOVED our meals. Husband almost always gets chicken parmigiana. Chicken was cooked perfectly and he liked the flavor of the sauce. Mine was excellent--chicken francese. I am super sensitive to overcooked chicken--I just can't eat it. This was thin chicken cutlets and cooked perfectly. The sauce was delicious!! It is served with broccoli sautéed with garlic and a potato croquette. With the sauce mingling with these....oooo yum! Had an amazing dinner last. It was recommended to us by one of my husband's fraternity brothers who goes frequently. There were 7 of us and we had appetizers, entrees, and desserts so had the opportunity to see and taste a large assortment of the menu. Everything was top notch! Been reading such wonderful reviews and have wanted to try this restaurant, so early on a weeknight, my husband and decided to go for dinner. We were greeted by I think the owner who asked if we had a reservation. We did not. There's plenty of empty tables, but felt berated for not having a reservation, and told to make one next time . There were empty tables the whole time we were there. He seated us at a table that had the spotlight from outside shining on it. All the other windows have shades, but this one did not so the ambience was lost on us, felt like we were sitting in a diner. The food and drink was good as expected. The service was great. The owner came at the end of our meal, and asked how everything was looking only at my husband and then quickly walked away. Not the welcoming atmosphere that I was reading about. Our waiter Haco was very attentive.The maitre d,Sully was so warm and friendly and the owner was very sweet and gracious and hugged us when we left. The portobello appetizer special was outstanding. Hands down the best Italian restaurant in Connecticut- I would even go so far as to say in the whole North East. My sister and I went last night for dinner and we are big foodies/harsh critics and everything was honestly perfection. We ordered Veal Parmigiana and Rigatoni Vodka as those two dishes, even though may be considered basic, are the hardest to perfect and we basically licked the dishes clean. HANDS down the best and we are so happy that we found or new go-to place. I can't wait to go back and try everything on their menu. Haco was delightful and an amazing waiter and so attentive. We had the most amazing dinner here tonight. Everything was just perfect. We treated a friend to a 70th birthday dinner. The entire staff went above and beyond to make it a special evening. The food... so meticulously prepared. We shared the hot antipasto. It was absolutely delicious. Clams, calamari, eggplant- all were yummy. Our entrees were the nightly specials, sole stuffed with crabmeat and a veal, spinach and pasta entree. Truly glorious. First time in a very long time we were wowed. We were visiting from out of state looking for a place for a nice meal. After scouring every on line menu we settled on ristorante di sofia. The outside is deceiving. Inside is a tasteful comfortable decor. The food was excellent and the service perfect. It was very much a place where the locals go and even though it was obvious clientele and staff seemed to all know each other it was not one of those places where you feel like an outsider. I stopped in for lunch and was the only person at this quaint restaurant. The tables were all white linen and the setting was pretty. I chose to sit at the bar and was served quickly by the owner. Tonight was the 2nd visit for my husband and myself. We love the warm welcome we received. We've sat down and ordered a drink. I had a glass of house Chardonnay- it was good, but the pour a bit small in my opinion. We wanted to share a salad and our waitress Lydia was trying to push another salad. It was rather annoying as we knew what we wanted. I ordered the swordfish, it was very tasty and the potato croquette was wonderful. my husband had the pasta puntenessca it was fabulous! the owner Nick could not have been nicer and more hospitable.
