Let's say it's pretty hard to find an open restaurant in Linköping on a Sunday (The boyfriend kept…read moresaying how different it was in Malmö where most of the places are open on Sundays) and this place being one of the few. It brags to serve good authentic Italian food and there are times when I still long for the food that I have had in Parma, so I had to try this place. The restaurant itself is located in Stora Torget (the big square) with a little bit of the fancy stuff (perfect for dinner date). The menu is quite big with the classic Italian primi, secondi, pasta menu and pizza menu. Since we weren't that hungry, we decided to share asparagus soup from the aperitif, carpaccio with truffle cheese for the primi and the house's carbonara special. Aperitif costs less than 100 SEK, primi is under 150 SEK pasta, pasta around 150-250 SEK and secondi or main course is up to 200-400 SEK. Pizza is around 150-250 SEK. It probably doesn't sound much for a big city restaurant, but maybe a little bit higher for a small town like Linköping. The asparagus soup with salmon was creamy and good and so was the carpaccio so I was already impressed with the food. We told our waitress that we wanted to share the carbonara and the dish came in two small plates with raw egg on each plate so it was perfect to share. I'm very impressed with the service (although the waiters and waitresses look like students - which they probably are since Linköping being a student town), they were very attentive, helpful and serviceminded. PS: Read on the side of the menu where they explained why the restaurant was named 1854 and why there were pictures of the three old Swedish guys on the restaurant windows :)

Brought me back to Italy. Nice thin crust, served Italian style. Knife and fork needed as they don't slice their pizza American style. Not greasy at all which can be a problem with thin crust sometimes. I also ordered a nice pint and a half sized Italian beer, Sans Souci 667cl. Very tasty and packed a bit of a punch at 5.6%. My only complaint is that it ended up being a bit pricy, bill came to $168 SEK or about $23. But was on vacation so, who cares :)

Our dinners ranged from several different types of pizza, lasagna, and Spaghetti Bolognese. The later two were excellent. Pizza is a very then crust and everyone liked the meal. Just not the best and more so I think many Americans prefer thicker crust. Very slow service from this point. We had to get up and find someone to order Desert and later in order to get the check. But overall, excellent Italian food, best in the city, beautiful dinning room and we all would repeat.

I had their pasta carbonara, which was made using pork chin instead of guanciale. Though it was fried on a pan until crisp as it should be. I haven't tried any original carbonara, but I thought this one was kind of salty. It was pasta made from scratch though so that's a plus.

Service is absent and rather impatient. I have a girl behind the bar who couldn't quite get my request about changing the milk in my latte to soymilk (I'm lactose intolerant). Isn't this Sweden where most people have their own preferences (vegan, vegetarian, lactose intolerant, celiac?) or maybe she just doesn't understand my Danish, the town being far away from Denmark? When I told her that we'd be sitting outside, she asked us to wait to get our coffee by the bar and bring them ourselves out. I naïvely thought that service would be better in smaller town, where everyone knows your name and stuff... ;) Anyway, I got my latte order that tastes pretty much ok, but not fantastic and we did get to sit outside enjoying the view of Stortorget in the sun. If you want good coffee and don't quite care about the view, maybe you can pick somewhere else to go
