We put it at Vinegar Creek boat ramp, outside of Riggins, and jetted up to China Bar Lodge where we ate lunch. They supplied us with home made sandwiches and delicious home made cookies, and we sat in the lodge and enjoyed the beautiful view of the river. The trip itself was fun. We got to see a lot of Idaho landscape that you will never see from any road, and were lucky enough to see some wildlife along the way. Bald Eagles, deer, mountain goats and sheep. It was awesome. Jeff, our boat pilot and one of the owners of the company, was super nice and he stopped the boat several times to tell us about the history and events that took place along the river. Also important to note was Brenda, who I spoke to several times during the reservation process. We had to change and update our reservation several times, as family availability for the trip changed, and as we had to make adjustments on who would be coming. Through all of this, Brenda was super helpful and took care of everything perfectly. All-in-all, this was a great experience, and would highly recommend Salmon River Tours for your wilderness river vacation experience.

We texted back and forth for about an hour and soon decided to book a trip. Family and new friends from Alabama, Arizona, North Carolina and Idaho decided to make the trip. Well the long and short of it is we had a fabulous time with an amazing outfitter. I can't speak highly enough about SRT and the way they made the trip a total success! After watching the episode we felt like we knew Jess and Brenda but we had no idea how much fun it would be. Jess went way out of his way to see we had the best possible time and made the trip a total success. Rocky was a great tour guide and went way out of his way to take care of anything we needed. The food was was far more and way better than anything we expected. Dinner was prime rib and shrimp and breakfast was just as good, gourmet all the way. The jet boat trip is a can't miss. Jess gave us a fantastic tour and really highlighted the beautiful canyon they call home. I've been boating for most of my life but Jess can maneuver this boat like nothing I've ever seen! It may be their business but we think it was much more than that. The worst thing I can say is that we didn't book a couple more days to really appreciate the canyon. The best thing I can say about it is we're all planning to be repeat offenders to this hidden jewel, some as soon as within 2 months. This time we're going to spend the time fishing with people at SRT who truly know the river and canyon. We did a lot of research. There's a lot of outfitters out there. So, she was surfing the web and came across this. I am so glad she did! It took almost 3 hours to get there, but the scenery from Vale to the dam was well worth it. At first, I didn't want to spend that much money for a boat ride...but, I now think it is worth every penny and more! I had such a great time. Dusty was our guide (what do you call them? Are they Captains?) He was not only a great guide, he just seems like a great person. He was nice, polite, and did one hell of a job on the river! I have great memories with my bestie, and some really great pictures also. We didn't see any exciting animals, but that's ok. Still a great trip! I will go to Yellowstone for wild bears! :)

Took the beautiful drive up to the dam from Baker City...about 85 miles each way via State Route…read more86. The road gets pretty windy once you hit Copperfield, but the views of Hells Canyon and Snake River are worth it! There are quite a few pull-outs to stop and take pics. We also passed numerous campground and picnic options. We enjoyed driving over the dam and taking pictures from both sides. Such beautiful views! If you follow the road to the end, passed the dam about 0.5 mile, you come across the visitors center. It was closed when we arrived, but we did enjoy watching the rafters and kayakers from the back deck. Would highly recommend a visit!

Hells Canyon Dam sits at the end of the road. Literally. It's the last of a series of dams that pen…read moreup the Snake River as it rolls along a steep, deep crevasse that separates Oregon and Idaho. To access the dam, you pick up Hells Canyon Road at Copperfield (if coming from the Oregon side) and snake your way up along the Hells Canyon Reservoir for about half an hour. It's a scenic drive that offers plenty of places to pull off and swim, and quite a few trailheads for hikes up into the Idaho side of the canyon. The route takes you along the base of some very steep cliffs and overhangs, and you can tell by the dents in the blacktop that there are often rockfalls along here. My wife was white-knuckling it during most of the ride out. The dam itself is nothing too spectacular, but it does sit in a very scenic spot on the river. Once you cross the dam, the road ends in a boat launch, and this is where the adventure begins. Here you can put in for kayaking, rafting and drift-boat floats down the canyon. Fishing abounds. The dam itself has a little visitor's center with historical photographs and a couple of Idaho Power employees who can answer questions. We were able to get some good info on road quality for our forthcoming drive up the forest service roads into the Wallowas. Super helpful! If you're not floating or fishing or otherwise using the recreation side of the river, there's not a whole lot to do here other than learn about the dam and take in some pretty scenic views from the canyon floor. It's almost more about the views on the drive in. And you'll be seeing them again on the drive out, as there's nowhere to go from here but back the way you came.
