It picked up PROMPTLY upon clicking the 'Ready to Collect' link on an email they sent around the approximated arrival time listed in my booking. The SUV we rented, a Nissan X-trail (basically a Rogue w/ 4x4 capabilities), was not brand new, but it was in perfect working condition, the rates 30-40% cheaper than Enterprise at the airport. And that included an additional driver, unlimited mileage, and $0 excess insurance, booked 2 months in advance. The service guys were a bit curmudgeonly, but perked up some after giving them my undivided attention. Note: Your United States driver's license will do in NZ; no need to acquire an IDL. Drop-off was a breeze. The shuttle driver kindly looked up the beginning and end mileage when requested at the time of drop off and before driving us back to the airport for our departure flight. 1500 road miles+ around the South Island to make for such a gratifying journey!

Autoslash found the cheapest rental for me and it turned out to be this off-airport Hertz location. Convenient because it saved me having to go back to the airport to pick up the car. A very friendly and helpful clerk went over the contract and the price, not pushing me for the loss damage waiver because that's included with my credit card. And not pushing for the fuel option because I'm sure I'll be able to find a gas station in Picton. Yes, this was a one-way rental from here to the top of the South Island. I reserved a small SUV with an automatic transmission and that's what I got. A recent model Toyota RAV-4 that was in excellent condition. Just a few small scratches that I documented. The car had nothing wrong with it mechanically and it drove just fine for the two days I had it across 200 or so miles from here to Blenheim and Picton where I turned it in. Five star service. But the price for a fine vehicle is great, the shuttle transit doesn't take all rush long, and the people at the rental agency are fantastic. We had questions about where to go while enroute to Queenstown for food, gas, etc. The folks at the agency recommended a few stops and we went to every single one. Amazing recommendations, vehicle was great, no issues. In short, car fantastic. People were great. Would absolutely hire a car from them again. I'd rather travel the extra distance to pick my car up from these personable, friendly folks than a costlier unfriendly counter at the terminal.

The car they offered didn't have a ton of bells and whistles, but it got the job done and had good gas milage. They had offices all around NZ meaning that it was practical to have a nice road trip picking up here and dropping off elsewhere. I would note that throughout New Zealand, rates for renting a car vary widely depending on where you pick up and drop off, so shop around and consider your plans. I was able to get a great rate by going northwards (apparently the prevailing direction is south, so taking a car in the opposite direction helps the company out and they help you out). Additionally, given all the hazards in NZ, I would definitely get insurance. The wifi and GPS options probably aren't needed if you can get a sim card and if your phone or device will give you a location. There aren't a ton of roads here, so you probably won't get lost.

When I took the car eveything was ok until I realize at my hostel that there were nothing to hide my stuffs in the back of the car. I went back and they changed my car as I explained that I planned to let my car for few days while tramping. They were really nice and comprehensive. And above all the rent is cheap. I hope it will be the same in Auckland !

When you look at the hotel, there's one main building with a tower at either end. Our room was in the tower, on the ground floor. I thought that was pretty cool, but as I entered the room, I came to understand it was much better than that. We essentially had an apartment, not just a hotel room. You entered into a living room area. The tower was an octagonal bedroom with many windows (and curtains). At the other end of the living room was a kitchenette and bathroom. I really liked how much room we had and I really liked the octagonal bedroom. It was decorated in a modern way and looked cool, plus I liked all the windows. Although spacious, the rest of the suite was a bit plain. There was a TV with a sofa facing it (I think it folded out into a sofa bed) and a table. I was happy with this place and its location right next to the park. I would definitely stay here again, especially if I could get one of the tower rooms.
